That's weird... you say that the MT3G (14.7mm) is thicker than the Hero (13.8mm), yet phoneArena says that the MT3G is 13.6mm (http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-Magic-phone-p_3421.html) vs 14.3mm for the Hero (http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/HTC-Hero-phone-p_3813.html).

QWERTY sliders have a tendency to be quite pudgy, so any means to battle their bulge that doesn't harm the typing ergonomics or phone specs is most certainly welcome. In terms of keyboardless smartphones, I would say that the current models are thin enough for practical purposes, but not, perhaps, fashion purposes.

The thickness of the phone and its gaudy look is the reason I skipped the G1 and went straight for the mytouch. I would have waited for the Galaxy for its many improvements (8gb internal capacity,5MP camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, sleeker design, but the 128MB RAM is absolutely pathetic when Android already struggles w/ 192at times. That killed all benefits to me.

Don't get me wrong, I still love any Android phone, but having a slide out QWERTY keyboard is a must-have feature for me (can't get used to the on-screen keyboards).

Sounds like the Verzion Sholes is going to be a great phone, considering it's thin size and the slide out keyboard :]

I switched from a Cingular 8125 which I believe was also made by HTC. So the G1 is thinner. & I waited till the my touch came out before buying. I like the size & keyboard on the G1 better then the my touch. The my touch is to small. & no keyboard.

I agree with Eclipse- my G1 with an extended battery is still slim enough that its not a problem- and the extended battery actually gives it a "meatier" feel- ie, more "solid" feeling- and it is still not too bulky for me- chris
