Sprint Samsung Moment specs revealed

We posted bits and pieces of the Samsung Moment specs during our live post today. I tried multiple times to get Samsung Mobile to produce a complete list of hardware specs, and while they gave me a press kit it was missing all the details. I spoke with a dozen people from Samsung and Sprint and was able to compile the following list.

Known specs of the Samsung Moment:

  • 800 MHz Samsung S3C6410 CPU
  • 3.2 inch AMOLED display (320 x 480 pixels) 16M colors
  • 512 MB ROM / 256 MB RAM
  • Dimensions: 4.6 x 2.34 x 0.63 inches; weight 5.67 oz.
  • 2 GB microSD card included / expandable up to 32 GB
  • Standard Lithium (LiIon) battery 1440 mAh (up to 5.5 hours continuous talk time)
  • QWERTY keyboard that slides out horizontally
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and camcorder with auto-focus
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, GPS
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Outlook e-mail with Microsoft Direct Push Technology and HTML support; E-mail (EAS), POP, IMAP
  • Easily view Word, Excel, PowerPoint on the go to maximize productivity
  • Ships with Android 1.5

We love the 800 MHz CPU, but are a little sad this phone will ship with Android 1.5. I think we were able to uncover most of the specs, but if we missed something please let me know.

Full HD video of a hands on walkthrough is coming up next.

Does it have a digital compass? Isn’t that needed for apps like layar and Google Street View to autorotate with the direction the phone is facing?

Verify if it has a capacitance or resistance touch screen? And is it multi-touch?

    Can you verify the following:

    - Multitouch
    - Compass (you mentioned it “works as a compass”)
    - Compare side by side to a few other phones so we can get an idea of how thick it is. Sure we can read specs but the side-by-side comparison would really help. Specifically a Palm Pre, Sprint Hero, and this phone.
    - Assuming you demoed the Sprint Hero, how big a difference is that 800Mhz processor? Did you notice it moved much smoother/faster?
    - Web browsing speed?

I say web browsing speed because I demoed a MyTouch 3G on T-Mobile network and even over WIFI the browser was ridiculously slowed when compared to my Palm Pre.

PS: Thanks for the 7min video. All I could find before that was 1-2minute worthless videos. Can’t wait for this thing to get seriously reviewed.

Wow, this looks like it might be the first worthy successor to the G1.

It even addresses my issues with the G1. Namely, lack of camera flash, small battery (though I now have the Seidio 2600mAh replacement), processor speed, and internal memory capacity.

AND it’s made by one of my favorite electronics companies that doesn’t support the Israeli military. :)

I second the call above for a full review ASAP. Come on Samsung, let us have a better look!

What did you say? Samsung doesn’t sell phones to the children killers?!
My next must be a samsung then :)

Mr Furr Your understanding in Politics is of the same extent as your understanding of technology.
The Isrealis do not need Samsung they can do very well on their own and better as been shown. e.g The Israelis were the first in the world to use GPS navigated bombs while wiping the Iraqi nuclear program in 1981, let alone developed their own airborne tankers.
As for killing Children I suggest you consult the record of bombing buses in Jerusalem. We dont want to rule the Children of the arabs, you are most welcome to have them. if you are so compassionate.

Trying to be smart and argue based on your mind intoxicated by Israeli media propaganda only makes you look like a jackass. Not to mention you playing down compassion directly in assumed favor of terrorism/counter-terrorism (whichever you see fit; the truth or your truth.)

Palestinians support terrorism and harmful acts against all non-Muslim people, as do the Saudis and Iranians and many others. Why Paton and the rest of our guys in WWII didn’t roll over and wipe that whole lot out I’ll never know, but we’ve sure come to regret it in later years.

            @SomeInternetDude

Saying that is like saying; “Americans support guns in schools and street gang shootouts.” It’s almost 2010, stop being so damn ignorant. No nationality is perfect. No race is perfect. No person is perfect.

Bad people come in all colors and sizes. Get used to it.

It’s not big. It’s a little thicker than non-keyboard phones but that’s to be expected:

    Samsung Moment: 117 x 59 x 16 mm
    Samsung Behold 2: 112 x 56 x 14.35 mm
    Google G1: 117 x 55 x 15.75 mm
    Samsung Omnia II: 118 x 60 x 11.9 mm
    Apple iPhone 3G: 116 x 62 x 12.3 mm

Sounds like a pretty sweet phone. I’d consider getting it if it weren’t on Sprint. Hopefully the performance of the sholes/tao will rival this.

1.5 AND no compass? Has anyone at Samsung ever heard of augmented reality (which requires a compass)? Disappointed. Might still get Hero, might wait for HTC Dragon. Not getting the Moment because of lack of compass. I really like the idea of augmented reality. Plus the 3.2 MP camera instead of 5 MP is just kinda strange.

Another android phone crippled with lack of ROM. When will they learn that 512MB of ROM is a complete joke. Needs to be 8GB minimum!!

    reply?
    • Thumb up Thumb down +3

The amount of ROM a phone has is irrelevant since you can’t add things to it. It’s simply non-writable memory that stores the OS. If Android fits on 512mb of ROM, it’s fine. RAM is a different story, since it’s the temporary memory used to run programs.

      • Thumb up Thumb down -2

You’re an idiot and completely wrong. You store your apps in the ROM. Limited ROM means limited app storage space. Learn something before posting.

        reply?
        • Thumb up Thumb down +1

No, you are incorrect Derek. Think about it before you post. ROM = Read ONLY Memory. ROM is used for the OS and non-movable data. Besides, apps can be saved to an SD card on most phones. Big whoop.

          reply?
          • Thumb up Thumb down 0

ROM means ready onboard memory, not read only. If it were, how the heck would you install anything on it? If all your apps were in RAM you wouldn’t have them when you powered the phone off and on again.
ROM can be extended through the use of external memory and a hacked/rooted phone, like on the G1 with apps2sd extending ROM space for applications to the SD card (slow, but with a class 6 adata card not too shabby).
Too many apps bogs down the device anyway. And considering apps are usually a meg or two, I can’t imagine how many apps would fit on 8GB worth!
Google would do well to natively support apps2sd on the OS side and device developers would do well to keep increasing the class or speed of removable memory so there’s less of a difference in performance from ROM and SD. Also, they should cache and throttle the bus itself like we do for desktop computers. Lots of possibilities there, just not as cheap glitzy as adding an LED flash, reflective paint or a 3.5mm headphone jack to the device to make a quick buck.
I think that’s why Google wanted to have direct involvement with the Nexus One.
Anyway, back to the moment. Nice CPU speed boost, I’m sure it’ll help. I just wish they gave it as much RAM as ROM!

          • Thumb up Thumb down 0

            Oops. I ment above!

          • Thumb up Thumb down 0

I am inclined to go with pelo88 on this one. Agreed that traditionally ROM means read-only memory, but since we all know that the onboard memory in Android phones is in fact NOT read-only (since that is where apps and data are stored when you download and use them) we have to thhrow tradition out the window.

I would be happy with a 1GB ROM, plenty of storage for all the apps I’d ever need, plus plenty of space for future OS versions.

Way to interject some Anti-Semitism into a freaking Cellphone Article, William Furr. And, Sohip, Rockstar, and Wronginfo, you were quick to join him in the Anti-Semitism pool. This article didn’t need your political propoganda. STFU’ers.

These anti-Semitic posts are a reflection of how deeply islamic terrorists have penetrated the United States’ culture. There are only two bastions of freedom in the world, the USA and Israel. If the jihadis take over, see what happens to your freedoms, including losing completely any ability to diss islam.
