Walmart to sell Verizon Droid for $188

No matter what product is launching, you can pretty much always expect Walmart to undercut the competition and have it at a lower price. The upcoming Verizon Droid is no exception. Starting Friday sometime soon, Walmart will offer the Droid for $188.00 with 2 year contract. Yup, that is the actual in store price (no silly mail in rebate) which is over $100 cheaper than you would pay at Verizon. They will also have the Droid for $500 off contract compared to $599 at Verizon.

Check your local Walmart circular ad because they are also having a major electronics sale on November 7, 2009. I heard they have the Xbox 360 Arcade for $99 (after $100 gift card).

Update: Some people are confused about the price of the Droid at Verizon Wireless stores. Below you can see an excerpt taken from the official press release. I called my local Verizon store and they also confirmed the mail in rebate. Best Buy ($199) and Walmart ($188) are selling the phone without the rebate.

DROID by Motorola will be available in the United States exclusively at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online on Friday, Nov. 6, for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement after a $100 mail-in rebate. Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card.

Update 2: If you are planning to pick up the Droid from Best Buy or Walmart, make sure you call the store first. I have found that many Walmart locations do not carry Verizon phones. My local Best Buy is also not a Verizon reseller.

Update 3: Out of the 5 Walmarts in my area, only 1 carries Verizon phones. I finally got in touch with the Verizon rep at the store and they did not have the phone yet. At this time we do not know when Walmart will have the phone available, but it is coming.

Update 4: Several readers have reported their local Walmart stores have the Droid. One reader said they would sell them on November 6 at 9 AM and another reader reported his store wouldn’t sell them till November 8.

The Verizon site states the Droid is selling at $199 – so I don’t think it’s $100 off the price – just $11.

So will the Eris be $88 bucks?

Absolutely right: $11 savings. Yet another example of the unquestioned reliability of an Internet news source as long as its graphics look “professional” enough. Geez. How about some fact-checking? On the other hand, if you allow this comment to stand, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and entertain the possibility that the rest of your site isn’t squirrely like this.

Went by a Verizon kiosk at lunch today and talked to a rep. If you get the Droid through Verizon with a 2 year contract, it is $299 and you can get $100 back with a mail in rebate which brings the price to $199 after rebate.

It may *only* be an $11 savings but the fact that you don’t have to mess with a mail-in rebate is a win. Nice to see retailers starting to give you the savings up front instead of making you jump through the many hoops of trying to get a rebate in the mail.

I’ve never really had a problem getting a rebate from Verizon in a timely matter but yeah it’s a pain to have to jump through hoops to get money back when they should just discount it up front.

I don’t understand this – “DROID by Motorola will be available in the United States exclusively at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and online”

Obvioiusly that’s not the case.. it’s available from BestBuy and Walmart as well… and cheaper too. Anyway, I don’t see why anyone would go to Verizon stores or even Bestbuy when it’s so cheap at Walmart. Like their ad says – you can save on the stuff that you really want where you already save. Right?

it’s a mistake by whoever wrote the press release. Droid is an exclusive to Verizon as a carrier, but not as a retailer obviously.

Does this mean we can buy the droid tonight at midnight at walmart?

When will walmart start selling them on friday though, and how much more hassle would it be to get an employer discount afterward from Verizon?

Think I may skip the verizon store tomorrow morning because I really didn’t want to deal with the mail-in rebate hassle.

Will Walmart have 1 year agreement option as well?

I’m a bit confused on how it will work online at Verizon? I’ve heard that the mail in rebates are taken off automatically online so it would just be $199? Or is that not true?

Also, I’m more than willing to pay $11 more and deal with a rebate to avoid shopping at Wal-Mart… :)

Hey some people were trying to find a Walmart that acually has the Droid. I found some. If you live in the east Alabama area, the Auburn and the Opelika Walmart will have the phone everyone is talking about. Unfortunately you will have to wait till Sunday night at 12. I think I can wait two days to save 100 dollars (no contract) the choice is yours.

Yes, wal-mart will have the Droid for the price listed above in the pic. Like many people have done, check with your local wal-mart retailer and see if they are going to have the Droid in stock. Here where I live, wal-mart has 2. Not much at all, but then again, 98% of the people here are still 10 years behind everyone else, when it comes to new technology. You say Android, and they are like…”What…??” Also not for sure if wal-mart will be carrying the Eris. Have not heard anything yet, plus a wal-mart discount card will not work when purchasing the any phone… *bummer…yes I know*

Now you can get the DROID for $149 if you’re an existing customer and renew with a 2-year agreement right from Verizon’s website – http://bit.ly/136bNa

The only dodgy part is that it says it requires an e-mail plan or a plan with an e-mail feature. What’s the difference?

I’ve called 5 or 6 walmarts around here and none of them even had a clue what I was talking about. And these are the people who work in the electronics dept.

Has no one received an e-mail invite from Phandroid or Wirefly? $149.00 with free shipping and the same 2- year plan. Did I miss something here somehow? I was surprised to have not seen this price mentioned here. Now I am concerned that it’s not a respectable advert?

I purchased my Droid at Walmart the day it came out. they knocked $12 off the retail and did the mail in rebate in store for me. Hard to hate the evil retail giant with deals like that….

what’s with the ‘dell mobility’ site offering the droid for 119? at first, it said ‘new verizon customers only’ but then i selected upgrade and it offered $119 with contract extension…..

    your thoughts? thanks

I spoke with a Dell Mobility Rep a couple of days ago, and the price for the Motorola Droid was $120 for a new activation or extension, and $150 for those of us who want to add a line to a family plan. The Droid Eris was $0 (for new activation) or $20 (for adding on a line).
