Motorola CLIQ rooted: Can the hackers port Android 1.6 before Moto?

It took awhile, but the guys from ModMyMoto were finally able to find an exploit and gain root access on the Motorola CLIQ. Android modder TheDude has posted the instructions so that any user can hack their phone. He goes on to say they are currently planning custom ROMs based off Android 1.5 and potentially Android 2.1.

Motorola has pushed out some updates to the CLIQ, but has yet to make an official statement about updating the phone to Android 1.6 or higher. Hackers were able to bring Android 1.6 to the G1 and myTouch 3G before T-Mobile rolled it out and I expect we will see a similar situation again.

I’m really excited to see if someone can port the stock version of Android 1.6, with no Motoblur.

My CLIQ is currently sitting on my desk with a dead battery. Whenever I can locate my charger, I’m going to hack it and provide a full report. The instructions look rather simple so hopefully it won’t take that long.
