We first reported last month when Sony Ericsson unveiled the Xperia X10 that it could be headed to AT&T or T-Mobile. Both carrier’s 3G bands were listed in the official product specifications, but we didn’t know which the phone would support when it landed in the United States.
Attempting to browse the FCC website gives any normal person a headache, but Engadget was able to spot the latest filing for the Xperia X10. Included in the documents was confirmation of support for UMTS HSPA Band 1, 4, and 8 (2100, 1700, 900). Operating band 4 (1700) is the frequency that T-Mobile uses for their current 3G network which further fuels the speculation we could see the device. Absent from the FCC documents were support for operating bands 2 and 5 (1900/850) which are the 3G frequencies for AT&T.
There have been multiple release dates thrown around for the Xperia X10, but it is officially listed as Q1 2010.
For those who need a refresher on the specs, the highlights include:
- 1 GHz Snapdragon QSD8250 platform
- 4 inch capacitive display 480 x 854 pixels WVGA
- 8.1 megapixel camera with LED flash – up to 16x digital zoom
- Up to 1 GB ROM (need to confirm this) / No word on RAM
- Ships with 8 GB micro SD (could vary by carrier)
- 1,500 mAh battery
- GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi
- 3.5 mm audio jack
- Android 1.6
Now the question becomes: Will T-Mobile subsidize this device or will it only be sold unlocked online. T-Mobile is reportedly going to offer the Nexus One so it will be tough for the Xperia X10 to get attention. The Xperia is said to be expensive and it will ship with the already outdated Android 1.6.
T-Mobile did recently launch the Sony Ericsson Equinox so I guess it is possible for the two companies to keep their relationship going.

We had the change to play with the X10 a month ago. Outstanding device. Software was not ready yet, few problems where there but a really nice machine. At the moment lots of our dutch readers are waiting to see that one comming

That UI is even more beautiful. It looks smooth like the iPhone.

which phone is better the Xperia X10 or Nexus One?
Depends on what you’re looking for, both have their pros and cons:
- nexus has a trackball
- x10 has a better camera (and dedicated camera button)
- nexus will most likely have (more) frequent OS updates
- nexus has noise cancelling
- etc..
I’m personally going for the X10 for its looks and better camera.
i really like this phone, but aesthetically, to my eye, it looks way too boxy compared to the Nexus 1. i’ll have to see how the prices compare though before a final decision.
The UI kills it in a way, see Cliq,Behold 2,Hero,Droid Eris,exc all stuck on cupcake…
i have a feeling the N1 is going to be a hell of a lot cheap that the X10, and thats just cause its HTC vs Sony. but all in all, im sure i’ll be going with the N1 because im a die hard HTC fan. but thats not to say the X10 isnt a great phone. its just not my style, but hey! thats the best part about Android, so many options now, for your personal needs and wants. =]
oh and, the N1 is going to be all over XDA with rooting/mods/hacks. why? because its HTC. i doubt they are going to get far, or even have a big enough pool of people wanting to do that with the X10, but i could be wrong. it would be nice to see, because i would definitely want some of those features on my N1 hahaha
That is exactly the reason I have owned over 6 HTC phones.
Do you guys honestly think that T-mo will subsidize BOTH of these phones?! If that were to happen, both HTC and SE wouldn’t realize a maximization of profits, and frankly, I’d be shocked if HTC or SE wouldn’t sign a deal with T-mo to make sure they were the only high-end phone coming out within a specific time period.
My money’s on HTC and the Nexus One. I am almost positive that SE has joined Nokia as manufacturers that put out cool phones, but never get them subsidized, thinking they’re so great we’ll pay $600-800 for them.
Android 1.6 seems hopelessly out of date, even with a (vague) promise that updates will be forthcoming. The ‘boxiness’ is more than mitigated by the good quality of screen & camera. A proprietary inteface skin is nice – but can it be turned off? Some people (e.g. me) really like the standard Android UI.
