"The goal here kids is world dominance and open source for everyone. Google doesn’t care who sees their code or modifies it."

Wrong! The goal of Android is advertising - pure and simple. It's one more avenue to get more google ads infront of more eyeballs! Much like iPhone's main purpose is to get iTunes in front of more and more eyeballs.

Both are vehicles to each company's bread and butter.

Like it or not. Those viewpoints by the "media" are the viewpoints by the general public. Think about all the basic features that iPhone didn't have for the first 2 years...and it still revolutionized the industry - even making long-time touchscreen product companies like Palm and HTC look like a joke.

I'm honestly expecting Android to be reduced to almost nothing if the iPhone is released on the other US carriers this year. The only reason Google is able to gain any ground right now is because iphone is exclusive to AT&T. If a **non techie** person walks into a store and sees the iPhone next to ANY Android device, they will ignore the Android device hands down.

Understand I'm an Android fan and really want it to succeed but Apple has got a stronghold that will only increase when the new iPhone comes out. I'm surprised that Google was not able to pull out a real WOW feature with Nexus One. Mark my words, Apple will, and it will be one of those slap yourself in the head moments when everyone says "why the hell didn't we think of that?"

I'm really expecting Apple to follow Google's approach and do the online purchase thing - where you choose your provider after you choose hardware too.

you could bank on it, ANDROID will be #1 in all catagories in 2-3 years from now. just look at how far Android has come. With the release of the Nexus One, i feel like Android is just starting and is only getting better. bacause of Nexus One and the Droid, many devs will come over to Android and our app #s will spike up.

on a side not, out of the 100.000 apps on the app store, 80.000 of them are tip calculators and fart apps.
GO GOOGLE & GO ANDROID!!!!!!!!!!!

The one part I've not heard anyone state is the control that the apps have.
Sure you can have the same game or app title across Palm, WinMo, iPhone and Android. But Android is the only OS that allows you to make any app the default.
Don't like your camera app iPhone users? Sorry. Don't like your IE browser WinMo users? Sorry. Don't like your Home screen app Android users? You're Welcome!
:)

We get to pick and choose which app we want to be default.

How many home screen replacement apps are there in the Android Market? How many screen shots of 'Home' have you seen that are different? All the iPhone home screens I've ever seen look exactly the same.

To me, that's one of the significant differences between iPhone and Android.
There are others, but that's my favorite one.

If you take a look from a wider point of view google is not "trying" to keep up if anything they are getting farther ahead of apple and microsoft than ever before.

Google entered their Mobile OS Android for one reason in my opinion... to crush windows mobile and iPhone.

I'm sure most of you noticed Google is also developing an operating system Chrome OS. Now why would they enter into this ring? To crush Microsoft and Apple.

It goes without saying the search engine keeps its hold of being the best and locking out Microsoft bing as well...

The goal here kids is world dominance and open source for everyone. Google doesn't care who sees their code or modifies it. Unlike Microsoft and apple that lock down their OS'. Google takes a different approach... let the people have full control.

Goodbye apple and microsoft its been nice having you around but I'm ready for true software freedom!

CNN guy did seem to know the most about it. This competition should drive smartphones further: iPhone will probably have to add HD screen (not sure what that would do to their apps), MS is already saying WinMo 7 is just around the corner (hope it's not a disappointment). Competition is a good thing and the idea of an iPhone "killer" is a myth (perpetuated in part by Verizon/Droid). It doesn't need to kill the iPhone to capture a large chunk of the market.

Don't know about a Nexus Two by June, but maybe a bunch of other Nexus Ones by other names (a la Euro Hero, Sprint Hero, Droid Eris). And that's a good thing. Might give HTC a chance to add multitouch and their SenseUI goodies.

Still want an HD2 running Android on AT&T or Verizon/Sprint. Next big thing?

As a member of the media (local newspapers for 13 years), I can say that journalists find people who say what they already believe. And the story line they want to push is, "Is this an iPhone killer."

This is ridiculous because no new phone is going to KILL the iPhone, in terms of six months from now, we'll hear Steve Jobs say, "Oh, one more thing. We're throwing in the towel on the smartphone market.

This is why they seem incapable of looking at what the Nexus One does do well. Saw a NYT review (I think) saying the N1 was a failure because it didn't have pinch to zoom and a physical ringer switch ... really? Those are the determining factors? Thanks New York Times. NEWS TO ME.

I would like to point out the falacy of the guy saying NOBODY is gonna buy this for the screen. It's taken every bit of self control not to pick up the Droid for it's big beautiful screen and that, along with the integrated connectivity, is the biggest thing pushing me in the Android direction.

Full disclosure: The games make me want an iPhone and the HD2 may make me wait till February to see what Windows 7 has in store. But I'd buy N1 today if the Verizon version were out.

media is bias to there parent company so take it with a grain of salt, we have the Internet now so it makes it easy for someone to weed out fact from delusion. And regarding Google/Android it has grown steadily, its not like with the intro of the Nexus One the world will flock to it. But i think if you look at the adoptions of the OS in relation to the time line of its relese, it is the fastest adopted Mobile OS ever. And if that trend holds true for 2010 and on "and it looks like it is" and with carriers bumping other OS's for Android world wide, Well its a matter of time Before Android is everywhere.

We will be mocking Other OS's in favor for Android like we mock windows mobile today.

Unfortunately the biggest hit to the Nexus One was all the internet hype that emerged before the press release. I love the direction Google is heading in but the expectations were raised waaaaay too high.
