I tip my hat to Rogers, good for them! I am with t-mobile in Cleveland Ohio and still have my G1. In my opinion, t-mobile should offer this to their G1 customers because what is the point of having an android device if you can't have the latest version? The original G1 users who have been loyal from the begining should not be stuck with android 1.6 because htc decided to give the G1 such low memory. I think ot is stupid that they put such low memory. That's my opinion, however I doubt that t-mobile will follow in Rogers foot prints. T-mobile does care about their customers, but not that much.

Ok, here's the dealeo, you are not eligible if it was a full outright purchase. Its only valid if it was obtained through an upgrade.

I am a rogers customer who has upgraded to the htc magic from an htc dream (ordered the phone Tuesday night and it arrived Thursday Morning). The upgrade is free in terms of dollars (yay!) yet requires that you extend your contract by the number of months since you obtained your dream (boo!), which in my situation is 7 months, which isn't bad at all (this is about the maximum extension possible seeing as the rogers android phones only came out in early June). The only way you could get an htc dream in the first place was to sign a new 3 year contract, so no one is going from 0 to 3 years due to this upgrade since we already had very fresh 3 year contracts.

So to summarize, you get a brand new htc magic for free (yes, really, my bill showed $0) and all you have to do is extend your contract (up to 7 months).

Side note: Remember, this is the htc magic, not the mytouch3g. The htc magic has 288MB of RAM, so it won't have any problems with upgrades for quite some time. Even with modded roms, dream/g1 users are seriously limited for future upgrades due to the wimpy 192MB RAM, so in my opinion taking the upgrade was a no-brainer.

Thanks rogers!

So you get an HTC Magic (probably 32A - not a bad phone at all - BUT your 3yr (!!!) contract starts over from that day. I wonder how that HTC Magic is gonna look in 2013.

I'm not buying on contract again. It ends up being more expensive than just paying full price for the phone.

Are you a Rogers employee? The G2s offered are NOT FREE. The Dream owners have to sign up for another 3-year contract. That's a big jail sentence imprisoning the user into the hell of Rogers' uncompetitive rate plans for a virtual eternity.

I bought my g1 about 1 month before the mytouch came out and I felt a little ripped off. Then I found out my g1 doesn't have the memory for the 2.0 upgrades and it made me want to change carriers. I think a lot of t-mo g1 owners would agree with me that we got suckered.I love my g1 and I'm sure there are plenty of people who would rather keep their g1, but t-mo; like rogers, should offer some kind of restitution for selling a pda with obsolete memory.

G1 is not exactly on the same boat as Roger's Dream since it is not a htc rom.

But anyway solution would be to drop (or at least reduce) the cache partition. Main pb is that this might mean manual reflashing.
But then OTA could still occur either in smaller cache or in sd card as a cache. At worst a notification could be sent and ask for a 'manual' update (from pc or even a file dropped on sd card)
Would you say this would be worse than no more update at all ?! Seams more sensible than giving up and just replacing the phone by a magic !
