The T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition was first unveiled last October, but it got delayed and did not make its holiday launch. I was beginning to worry if the phone would ever see the light of day, but it is back with a release date and new spokesman.
T-Mobile will partner with Fender and Eric Clapton in a new ad campaign to launch the limited edition myTouch on January 20, 2010 for $179 (with 2yr contract). A preview of the ad is available on Fender’s site with their new tagline “Not just a phone. A collectors item”.

Upgrades over the original myTouch 3G include:
- 3.5 mm headset jack
- 16 GB microSD card
- 288 Mb RAM (vs 192 of the original myTouch 3G)
- Preloaded Eric Clapton songs along with music from Avril Lavigne, Brad Paisley and Wyclef Jean.
- New music player app
Special accessories will be sold for the limited edition phone, including new Fender-branded shells, a Fender carrying case and Fender screen protector as well as Rock Dock with Speakerphone.
Our friends at doubleTwist have also partnered with T-Mobile to include their desktop media sync software.
The Fender phone will launch with Android 1.6, but T-Mobile has confirmed the device will be upgrade to Android 2.1 this spring. This leads us to believe we will see a similar Android 2.1 update for the original myTouch 3G around the same time (no word on the G1 yet).
Are any music fans going to lineup to purchase this limited edition Android phone? The Nexus One retails for the same price (with 2yr contract), so I’m curious how many people will fork over the cash to get a limited myTouch.

Well if this goes to 2.1, the only difference would be the specs right? So either a super fast phone or a considerably sexy limited edition phone?
I’d probably still go with the nexus. Although if the mytouch had a hard keyboard I’d fly that way I think.
uh… so its not real maple? because a true sunburst wood grain would be classy.
Yeah, it seems kind of pointless. The headphone jack is neat, but the design doesn’t matter because you could just get a skin for it that looks like that.
Oh nice! Finally the 32A version surfaces! This should have come out BEFORE the Nexus One.

Having just replaced a MT3G with a N1, I can say that even if I were Eric Clapton or the CEO of Fender, I wouldn’t even consider this phone when the N1 is available for similar money. Even if they get 2.1 running on it, it will suck badly in any comparison with the Nexus.
Well if you are an existing Tmobile customer you have to be on a specific plan to even qualify for an upgrade price, (which is not a family plan), and you cant change plans for two years… The price difference between the 2 year billing difference and upfront cost of the N1 is crazy, in my case $720… It would be cheaper just to by the device at retail price… But for new tmobile cusotmers… you cant beat the deal.
