Alcatel brings Android to Palm Pre form factor

Most Android phones fall into two form factors. We have the full sized slideout QWERTY (G1, Moment, Droid) and the candy bar style touch screen only (MT3G, Hero, N1). HTC showed us some interesting designs in their leaked 2010 roadmap (like the Salsa and Tide), but we have yet to see any actual devices.

Frandroid is reporting that Alcatel will launch an Android phone for Orange sometime during the first half of the year that will feature a portrait sized QWERTY keyboard. The Alcatel OT-980 will be an entry-level Android phone with a QVGA display. Alcatel is hoping to price the device below the HTC Tattoo which went for $300 before carrier subsidy.

Because QVGA (240×320) screens have less screen area available and lower density than normal, some applications cannot render all their content properly on those screens.  As a result, on a QVGA device, Android Market will filter out all applications that do not declare they support small screens.

The specs for the Alcatel OT-980 include:

  • Android 1.6
  • Resistive QVGA (240×320) Touchscreen
  • 600 MHz processor
  • 192MB RAM
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Compass, Accelerometer, WiFi, A-GPS, 3G
  • microUSB
  • microSD memory card slot
  • 1150 mAh battery

Ewf pretty ugly, but I will never complain about more companies jumping on board with Android. :)

Why do companies think it’s okay to produce ugly, half-baked phones which can barely run android? Let’s not forget that the first generation android phones (which specs-wise, this phone appears to be) can barely run android, and then present nothing even remotely close to a fluid user experience.
