Google has a history of releasing new apps for Android 2.1 and then back porting them to earlier versions of the operating system. The Gesture Search that was launched earlier this month is now available on devices with Android 1.6 and users in all countries (where Android Market is available) can download it.
Don’t get too excited though. Gesture Search is only available by launching the special application and is not yet used in the native apps. I expect we will eventually see Google implement more gestures into their apps, but this is pretty much a beta program right now.
From Google: I’m happy to share with you that Gesture Search is now available on devices with Android 1.6 and higher. Additionally, it can be downloaded in all countries where Android Market is available, although it continues to only recognize the English alphabet. The new version also includes some improvements to performance and bug fixes. Please try it out and let me know what you think.

“Don’t get too excited though…”
the way Google has been supporting Android 1.6 is great.
Actually, i am excited
First they did it with Google buzz, and now with google gesture.
these backward compatibility is makes me feel like my HTC Dream still matters and has something in common with the Droid or Nexus one
My Hero doesn’t find this app in Android Market
Unless you’re running a custom Donut ROM, you wouldn’t see this on a Hero. The Hero is an Android 1.5 phone.
Works great on X10
How do you use the QR codes? I have an app called scanlife, but it doesn’t take me to the app store.
I just use the “Barcode Scanner” app, and it works like a dream.
Google, do you ever stop being awesome? No, no you don’t. Awesome app! Much faster to call someone now.
” downloaded in all countries where Android Market is available”???
I’m in Greece, android market is available here, but it’s not (nothing when searching the market, nothing w/ QR code).
