I know this is a old post but I wanted to add. Skype on Verizon is useless unless you are calling Skype users or another country. I recently dropped AT&T but I still have my old iPhone. I can connect to WiFi with the iPhone and make all the skype calls I want to landlines. So I rooted my Verizon phone and I use its data plan to make calls on my old iPhone. You can do the same with a iPod touch.

If iPhone can use data, I don’t see why Verizon can’t.

Original Skype value proposition:
Have internet access, so drop phone service and substitute Skype
Benefits:
Lots cheaper since we are only paying for Data + Skype

Verizon Skype value proposition:
Have verizon voice plan, have verizon data plan, add verizon skype plan
Benefits:
Pay for all THREE: Verizon voice, verizon data, skype voice in order to get free calls to Skype users and lower international rates.

Seems like a pretty weak value proposition for most people.

Has anyone ever tried to tether a Linksys iPhone (yes, the iPhone that came out before Apple’s iPhone) with a Mifi or other mobile broadband sharing device?

Skype is really great. What I don’t understand with some of the comments is the problem with using Verizon’s actual phone network instead of the data network? If anyone has been able to get a smartphone from any carrier for with just a dataplan let me know. Last time I checked, you needed a voiceplan. Since you need a voice plan anyways to use a smartphone, and verizon is not deducting minutes, does it really matter? Also, with skype, there’s no need to spend the extra minute adding it to your faves like GV.

Now, of course your can get a 3G data plan from verizon to run your laptop on the go… but then, we’re back to making calls from a computer and not phone.

As for the benefit of skype, Skype is king globally, but not in the US. This will give them a good entry in the US market, and for us who have friends and family living outside of US/CAN, Skype is great.

Name branding, and counting on the “regular” user to not read posts like this.

So we have something called “skype” but really it is just a regular cellphone plan that gives free calls to people on Skype. It isn’t VOIP except on the backhaul. And Verizon may well already be VOIP there so who cares? The value of Skype was only needing a data connection and then super cheap calls. But in this scheme you still need a voice plan to make Skype calls and it still uses that plan to make the calls. What exactly is the point?

It should be skype not swype where it says be sure to check rates…
