Paypal: Manage your account and send money on the go

Paypal is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to pay for things online, offering strict security encryption of your personal data and the convenience of being accepted at most major online retailers. Paypal is also a very good way for organizations or groups to accept donations, or for some employers to pay their employees. It’s also a good way for small/home businesses to accept credit card payments.

Paypal has released an app to help Paypal users view their current Paypal balance, send money from your paypal account, and view your transaction history, all conveniently from your Android phone. The balance tab is overly minimalistic, with a snapshot view of your current account balance.

The history section looks at–obviously– your historical transactions. An added bonus here is that positive transactions (such as money transfers from your bank to your Paypal account) are black in color, whereas money out is in orange lettering. This makes for an easy to read and pleasant viewing experience, and is very helpful for keeping track of your purchases.

Finally, Paypal allows you to send money to anyone, with convenient contact book integration for easy payment to individuals in your contact list. The send money tab also features the ability to…err…send money in many different currencies for added convenience for all of you international types. Users also have the option of attaching a short note to their donation.

The Goods

  • Minimalistic UI. Lacks polish but does the job well.
  • Convenient access to your Paypal account while on the go.
  • Transaction view allows you to figure out what you’ve been spending money on.

The Bads

  • Can’t really use this app for online shopping. Tighter integration with the Android platform would be nice, though not essential since you can pay via paypal through many stores via the browser.

Final Verdict: The Official Paypal app is a very good 1.1.3 release and promises easy management of your Paypal account while on the go. Though somewhat simplistic, it gets the job done and does it pretty well.

Paypal can currently be found for free on the Android Market. It should support all Android platforms, but as usual please let us know if you have trouble accessing the app.

Its not on the market. Are you sure its not available only in the US?

    • Anthony Domanico

Not sure at all, that’s why we need readers like you to tell us when you have problems! :)

This is a neat way to check your account in paypal, hopefully this one won’t become the next target of hackers.

Cannot find this app on Market from Norway…

  • Courtney

It didn’t show in the market for me either and I’m in the US.

    • Courtney

After searching for the app in the market, I found version 1.1. It says to remove version 1.0, this could be why the QR isn’t working.

      • Lorin

Hm, i tried to manually search for it and its not there.

  • scoopo16

nope me neither here in Ireland really want and need this app

  • Anthony Domanico

Weird… Paypal is listed twice on AppAware. Two corrections to the article:

    1. Paypal is currently in version 1.1.3 (not 1.0)
    2. Link should be market://details? Hopefully that works.

    • Anthony Domanico

Hmm…that didn’t work… I’ll try to track down one of the editors to get it fixed. Sorry about that all.

It should work if you search for “Paypal” on the android market.

Also, can’t find information anywhere about it being US-only, and because all of the AAM staffers live in the US or Canada this is the one challenge we are always going to have.

Thanks for the updates though, everyone.

Netherlands here. No result after scanning QR code. What’s up?

    • Anthony Domanico

Ignore the QR code for now… try searching for Paypal on the market.

We will get the QR code updated as soon as an editor is online. Unfortunately, most of them are on a plane to SanFran for I/O as I type this.

Cannot find on Market in Finland

  • Anthony Domanico

Thanks for the updates, all. I’m going to go ahead and say this app is U.S. ONLY. Sorry for the inconvenience/getting your hopes up. Is there a good way to know whether an app is U.S. only other than user-testing?

Only reason I ask is I usually look to various sources to try to figure out whether an app is available worldwide and often that search is fruitless as many sites don’t report that, and there’s no way for us U.S. folks to know it’s not available outside of our country.

Editors Note: QR Code is fixed.

Cannot find on Market in Romania.

When will this country/market nonsense stop? I wish someone could explain to me what’s the reason for this? I have a perfectly good Google Checkout account, credit card and everything, I have done purchases from my G1 while having the Market Enabler Hack, now I’m stuck with free/crap applications because I upgraded to the Desire and am not willing to root it. So I turned to the “dark side” and am stealing application from warez sites. Sorry developers, I know it’s not your fault but there’s nothing I can do, even if I want to buy your applications I can’t BECAUSE GOOGLE WON’T LET ME.
Seriously can someone give me a real, rational explanation for this situation?
    [RANT END]

    • Lorin

I understand you completely. This is total nonsense. I’m tired of this discrimination. Unfortunately no one is hearing us.

      • Anthony Domanico

I’m going to challenge you both a bit here. I definitely understand your frustration, and would feel the same way if I were living outside the U.S.

But have either of you contacted the folks at Google about this? What did they have to say? If they are the source of the problem, they would certainly be able to provide a logical explanation for why they are not allowing you to get apps outside the U.S.

        • http://Website Canterrain

I’m not saying it’s right or that I agree with it.

But it would not surprise me if alot of companies don’t release apps outside of the U.S. (At least initially) because of all the legalities involved. What’s ok to do in this place is not always ok to do in that place, and especially when it comes to handling other people’s money a company is going to want to protect its rear and make sure they are on solid ground.

Whether you’re buying soccer shoes from Chile, a cell phone from China, or selling surfboards in Costa Rica, PayPal works for you. With a network of more than 190 countries and regions, and in multiple currencies, PayPal reaches across the globe to give you or your business a way to pay or get paid.

    • Sorin

It has nothing to do with PayPal or Google checkout or whatever payment method you can think about. Any Android device is going to determine your location based on the phone network you are on or your IP (on non-phone devices). Then it allows you OR NOT to access payed apps or other protected apps based on what the developer chose.
As you can see here there are currently only 13 countries that have access to paied apps. 13!
My point is that we (the frustrated users that live in countries not among those 13) are hoping that sites like AAM could be more successful in pointing this anomaly to Google. Android is soooo global now, why is Market laging behind?!?

    • Sorin

I’m sorry, was not intended as a reply to your comment. Unfortunately there’s no EDIT button.

When I will be able to purchase application using PayPal from android market?

    • Anthony Domanico

I believe that functionality is coming in second half 2010.

Worked for me! I’m in the UK.

  • http://Website Canterrain

This would be an app I’d only be willing to use if I had my extra security features on my phone enabled.

As we begin to do more and more with our phones we are making ourselves more and more vulnerable should we happen to have our phone stolen. Or… lose it in a bar.

    • Anthony Domanico

The paypal app doesn’t store your password, and automatically logs you out after like 2-5 minutes, so it’s as safe an app as I’ve seen on Android.

      • Canterrain

Now that is an excellent idea on Paypal’s part. I may give this a download after all.
