Flash 10.1 ported to HTC EVO on Eclair, no root required

While Nexus One owners are waiting to get their official Froyo update in order to get their hands on full version of Flash 10.1, the HTC EVO has just gotten a little ego boost.  The guys over at XDA-Developers have posted up an APK file for the HTC EVO which enables full Flash 10.1 support in the web browser.

Those of you familiar with HTC Sense devices are probably aware that the handsets come equipped with Flash Lite which is a bit buggy, slow, and incompatible with many Flash components on the web.   Apparently the APK only seems to work on a few HTC Sense equipped handsets (Sprint HTC EVO and Hero) but may also be compatible with a few others.

Installation it fairly straight forward, but I did need to restart my EVO since the browser was acting a little slow after installing the Flash 10.1 APK.  I was able to get video files on Vimeo.com to play along with a few Flash games from Yatsha.com.  Hit the source link to download the APK and be sure to let us know how it works for you.

[Thanks Erik for the tip.]

Might this work on the MyTouch Slide?

I’m disappointed that you all ran with this one, too. For the last time, this is NOT full Flash.

Nick Gray – Maybe you should’ve read the 15 pages of comments, most of which say that this does not work or is no different than Flash Lite.

Seems like it worked for a lot of people?

I’m pretty sure this is just flash lite in disguise.

    Here’s a test I that can help (dis)prove it.

At that link is a flash video (I chose randomly).

I can confirm right now it does not work with the flash lite program contained on the Hero (I have not tried using this file at XDA yet).

I tried this using the stock internet program with mobile view setting turned off.

To really know once and for all if this is legit, we just need someone with:

A: an evo still on 2.1 that loads up this file.
    and
B: Someone with a nexus that has made the jump to 2.2 already.

Both can test the file using the stock internet program with mobile view turned off. If it is legit, both with play. If it is not (as I suspect) only the nexus can make the video play.

I’m pretty sure the guys at androidandme have access to an evo and a nexus one, so hopefully they can try it themselves and update the post with said results.

Great suggestion. I installed the supposed Flash 10.1 apk on my EVO and tried out the link. Does not work! But, I can say that the new installation does allow you to view more flash content than the flash lite version that ships with the EVO.

A few extra “adult” sites seem to work now, but I don’t think that the file gives full flash 10.1 as promised. I know you guys liek to report news, just make sure it’s accurate from time to time ;)

Does not play on a stock build of the Evo 4G (in the stock Sense/Android browser or Dolphin HD)

Just to make sure I can test this properly, the video at the above link is to play within the browser, correct? I have a Droid Incredible, installed the flash plugin. When I selected that video it did play, but not within the browser, in a video player. That’s more than I got before, I am using DolphinHD browser.

Is there an accurate test I can perform to see if this works or not?

    • http://www.lifequill.com Canterrain

No my hero does not open up a video player to play the file.

But it’s hard to be sure if that’s because you are on an incredible, the file is doing something, or because you are using the dolphin browser. (In desktop or mobile mode?)

That’s why I was trying to remove as many variables as possible by stating to use the stock internet browser in desktop mode.

Really the BEST way to do this test is to get three Nexus ones (or one changed to fit the needs).

      One without the file.

      One with the file.

And one with froyo and flash.

      Then see what happens.

But everything I’ve seen suggest this only works with sense phones… which also leads me to believe this is a flash lite plugin. The sense flash lite plugin….

Went to Seidio.com…the front page, I think, uses Flash to navigate the site. It loaded the graphics but couldn’t scrool through the page graphics as when using a pc.

Again, I do see more Flash functionality, but I would have to agree with some statements made above that it’s not full Flash 10.1
