Do you Yahoo!? There’s three apps for that

Users who have embraced Android as their phone OS but have not yet adopted Gmail have a reason to smile today. Yahoo! has announced the release of not one, not two, but Android applications to make the lives of Yahoo! Android users a little bit easier.

Yahoo! mail for Android

Yahoo! mail for Android allows users to easily set up their Yahoo! mail accounts to provide push email services to their Android devices. Prior to this application, users would have to go through the email application and set up their Yahoo! mail using POP/SMTP settings, a process which is Greek to our less tech-savvy Android friends. With the Yahoo! mail for Android app, simply enter in your username and password, and you’re taken straight to your inbox, and receive push notifications as soon as email arrives.

The Yahoo! Mail interface is fairly clean, though it feels very “iPhone-y.” Now, that isn’t necessarily a problem for me, and I actually enjoy the way the Yahoo! app looks and feels, but this iPhonization of some Android applications have been very hit or miss with the Android community. Some love the look and feel, others have adamantly opposed this iPhonization.

All gripes about the UI aside, the Yahoo! mail application is put together very well, and is sure to satisfy you Android users out there who are still using Yahoo!’s mail service. Best of all, the price is right (free).

Yahoo! Messenger for Android

Though several clients exist that allow Yahoo! messenger users to use this IM service on their Android phones, a native Yahoo! messenger app is sure to be welcomed by the Yahoo! community (the Yahoomunity!?). Assuming you’ve set up your Yahoo! mail credentials, your log-in information will automatically save in the Yahoo! messenger app for easy log-in. Once you’ve logged into both services, the Yahoo! mail app allows you to launch the messenger application right from the settings, and vice versa.

The services feel like they belong together, which makes sense as they were likely designed by the same time with tight integration in mind. The Yahoo! messenger application itself does exactly what you’d expect it to do, and it does the job well.

Yahoo! Search

The Yahoo! search application is simply meant to be a Google search widget replacement for your homescreen. The widget looks almost identical to the Google search widget with the only real difference being the big Y! logo instead of the big G logo. Perfect for you Yahoo! users who simply can’t get rid of your beloved Yahoo! search capabilities.

Final Verdict

Since I was my only Yahoo! friend on my buddy list, and the fact that I had 970 unread emails in my Yahoo! inbox (which I haven’t used in about 3 years), I think it’s safe to say that I probably won’t be using these services, but would highly recommend that you Yahooligans! download immediately. Both applications are free, and can be found on the market with a simple search for Yahoo! or by scanning the QR codes above.

Bummer. Doesn’t seem to be available for my G1, and I’d still have a use for this thing.

Seems its only available for 2.0+ devices.

2.1 is required. These will work on the G1 if you are running 2.1

nice app, but the biggest problem is that it needs more customizations (relic of iphone app??). you can only turn notification tone & status bar on/off together. you can’t turn off the ringtone but keep the status & LED flash on. also, you can only have 1 mail account setup. hopefully an update will fix some of this.

Can one use Yahoo messenger as an alternative contact book? Can one use anything but Google as contacts in the default contact book? A little off-topic but I really would like to know? Thanks in advance.

FINALLY – still not as nice as checking my email on my ipod touch (where I can swipe left to right on the main inbox view to delete messages, but it still seems better than k-9 which is what I was using.

Wow…And they just released an IMDB app too… Now Chase just needs to conjure up an Android app and I’ll be set!

“There is three apps for that.” ??? … can we get an “are”, here? I mean, c’mon it’s the title!

    • Val-Zho

…or if you are trying to play on the meme, “There’s an app for that”, how about: “There’s an app (or three) for that!” … There are one mistake in your headline!

Mail App is very weak. Almost no options – You cant even turn off or change audio notifications.- meaning it is either NO notifications or you get a bong every time you get a new mail. And there is no option to change your reply from address (I am a Mail Plus subscriber)….if you have Yahoo and you want Push (and nothing else) this is great – if you want a full Yahoo mail app, then you are still out of luck

I’ll be interested to see if Yahoo really jump on board android – if they can fully replace google sync & google services and make a “with Yahoo” type Android phone, that would be very interesting.

is there a hotmail equivalent? will the release of the new winmo stop that? i use k-9 which although better than stock i feel is only half an answer.

I am glad to see that they finally came out with a client for the Android. It works pretty well, but there are a few issues:

      1. If you decide you want it it use notifications, it is all or nothing. No vibrate or silent selection. The notification sound woke me up in the middle of the night, so I had to disable it for when I sleep.

      2. I happened to have my earphones on when it notified me of an e-mail. For some reason the sound is at full blast and was very uncomfortable.

This is getting ridiculous… My mytouch 3g is still on 1.6, no OTA update from Tmobile yet, and now a ton of great new apps are coming out on android 2.1+ only…. TMobile, where are the MyTouch updates??!?!!?? Youre taking too long!

I’m crossing my fingers for a fantasy football app. The fantasy baseball app for iPhone looks fantastic, and the mobile website just isn’t quite enough.

I too would love it if the yahoo mail app could allow more than one email address at a time. I use two yahoo addresses every day, and I’d love to be able to access them both through the app. I prefer it over the Fascinate’s mail client.

Also, any chance of getting yahoo calendar sync for android anytime soon?

This app is useless, very slow, and has no functionality. I am unable to work out how to download an attachment.
The app does not allow more accounts to be accessed though it only yahoo. The emails load after opening the app, so you have to wait ages. Very poor effort yahoo. In summary a USLESS and FRUSTRATING app.
