Cricket and Kyocera launch first Android phone next month

Cricket Wireless just put up the pre-sale page for their first Android phone, the Kyocera Zio, and our sources tell us the device will go on sale August 15 with a special $55 unlimited rate plan.

The Zio is an entry-level Android phone and it features a 3.5-inch WVGA display, 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, 3.2 MP camera, and Android 1.6. No price point has been announced, but look for the Zio to debut around $249-299.

Kyocera plans to offer an upgrade to the Android 2.x OS sometime in the future, but there is no guarantee the Cricket version will see this software update.

Cricket has been opening retail stores in new markets and their month-to-month plans will attract those on a budget (no credit checks or long-term service contracts). The carrier recently announced coverage in all 50 states after signing new roaming agreements with MetroPCS and Sprint Nextel.

For a sample of what to expect, check out the following video preview from Phonescoop of the beta hardware from CTIA.

The Android platforms’ ability to be ported to many low end devices is what, will help it”s popularity with consumers, retailers and manufactures.

Android seems to be bringing a lot of OEMs out of retirement. Android is a disruptor and a game changer.

“little bit slow”? That takes a century to execute a command. G1 can take it with its old ass hardware.

    OT,
My name is Zio. Zio Sinanovski. Lol. I feel honored.

Hi esteban, I believe the reason will need to be the 55 or 60 plan for this phone, because of the internet. It’s more megabits. But sure beats verizon. I use to have to pay $45.00 alone for the internet on my blackberry when i was a verizon customer. Cricket only charges $15 extra for internet

I own this phone and it is nothing but horrible. The screen lags; you can only use one finger at a time; there are miss strokes all the time. If you swipe left or right sometimes it will go up and down. Kyocera and Cricket Customer Service are impossible to work with to get an upgrade to 2.0. The phone freezes often and you have to hard boot it. The screen will time out for no reason at all no matter how long you have the screen time out set for. The soft keys only light up on start. There is a constant flashing green light you can never get rid of. For your money, the best thing to do to save you all of these headaches and more that i didn’t mention, you should find an actual Android phone and not consider either “droid” phone cricket has available.

We just got this kyocera android phone and it is terrible. To text it takes for ever because it seems to press what ever keys it wants. Is very cheap and plastic. We are so afraid to drop it even once. I am wondering if cricket has any good phones. I be willing to pay more. We feel like we just purchased a toy. It is very slow as well on the touch screen.

the reason it is running slow, is probably because it isn’t rooted, and has all the useless apps that the phone came with running in the background.
