Intro to rooting your Sprint HTC EVO 4G [VIDEO]

This is an intro to rooting your Sprint EVO 4G or ANY Android device for that matter. I want everyone to know what root is and why you might need it. Whether you have a G1, MyTouch 3G, Slide, or Nexus One, then you’ve probably heard about rooting or jailbreaking your phone and I just want to make sure you know what it all means. As a result, hopefully there will be a few more educated users out there.

HTC EVO simple root for Windows users

Warning: Hack at your own risk. Watch the videos below if this is your first attempt. Before you start, backup all the files from your SD card and delete/format your SD card.

First you need to download and install Microsoft .NET Framework on your PC: http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/B/E/1BE39E79-7E39-46A3-96FF-047F95396215/dotNetFx40_Full_setup.exe

Then install HTC Sync on your PC: http://member.america.htc.com/download/Driver/HTC%20EVO%20(Sprint)/HTC_Sync_2.0.40.exe

Then download the OTA Simple Root.zip and unzip: http://myevo4g.net/simple/?file_id=1

Open the OTA Simple Root folder, and once inside, open the OTA Simple Root application program. Then click the buttons starting from Step 1-4 and FOLLOW THE ONSCREEN DIRECTIONS. If at any time something goes wrong in any of the steps, don’t panic. Just delete/format your SD card and start over from Step 1.

After you’re done with Step 4, open the menu and click “Extras” then “Flash Recovery”. Then select the Recovery of your choice.

After you’ve completed all the steps and have loaded a custom ROM, remove all of the files no longer needed on your SD card by clicking “Extras” then “Clean Root-Files.” If that doesn’t work, delete all the files manually (including PC36IMG file).

To boot into Recovery on your own, power down your phone then press and hold the power and volume down buttons until you get to the screen with the skating Androids.

Once you’re in Hboot, wait for a second (it’s gonna scan for the PC36IMG file again so hopefully you deleted it) then use the volume buttons on your phone to select RECOVERY and use the power button to select it.

You should now be in the custom recovery and from here you can wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and flash any custom ROM of your choosing.

Thanks I was just thinking about this, this morning. And why would I need to root. It looks so complicated. Not sure I want to take the risk.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

There’s really little risk involved and its SUPER easy to get back to stock (see link above). Easier than it is to root! LOL
Just decide for yourself if the pro’s out weigh the cons for you. And you have me to walk you through the process ;)

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/27/technology/27iphone.html?_r=1&ref=technology

    • http://Website Nithin Jino

      Nothing.

Jailbreaking has been around before Android was here and since Android is now selling more than the iPhone, making Jailbreaking “legal” won’t change the fact that Android destroys the iPhone OS or “iOS” in every way, shape, and form.

      • eric

Yeah, great, that was helpful…. Perhaps this ruling may have positive repercussions for those who want to root their android devices…

  • http://Website Simon

    Hi Christopher,

your android modding videos have always been a great help for me to optimise and load ROMS for my HTC Dream.

I’ve noticed there’s alot of Android handset comparison reviews done (EVO vs DROID2 vs Incredible VS Droid X…) I’ve always been curious about comparisons made for ROOTED Android handsets.

In your opinion, which is the Best ROOTED Android phone out there… I think the DroidX is amazing, but the fact u can’t load any ROMs on it, makes it obsolete for me. seems the Samsung Galaxy S is the best phone out there that can be rooted, AND load roms on.

    whats ur opinion?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

There’s no TRUE development without Cyanogen backing a device.
The Samsung Galaxy S has been rooted already but I’m still waiting for the Cyanogen Mod team to get behind it (I’m sure they will with it being the only good phone on T-Mobile right now).

Right now there is a TON of development going on with the N1 and will continue to grow with it being Google’s official Android Developer Phone 3.

Its just a matter of better hardware or better development which has always been a tough decision for me…. =/

  • sellescorp

hey chris i your youtube videos are very helpful, i love my evo and think its the best smartphone on the market.,.,.,.i had some questions about your rooting videos though.,.,.1. are you supposed to back up your files before the whole process so you can save your contacts, apps, music etc and if so how (nandorid?). and also on your last video (3 of 3) there was a comment at the end that said we should delete some kind of image could you elaborate on that.,.,.thanks for the help and keep up the good work man

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

You can backup your stuff using which ever method you like. BUT since you don’t have root yet, you’ll have to reinstall all those apps one by one later…

Contacts are saved to Google’s servers no matter what so you NEVER lose those. No need to bother even backing those up =)

As far as that PC36IMG file, just after you follow my video, towards the end when you’re out of that screen with the skating Androids, and get back to your homescreen, delete that PC36IMG file from your sd card. Otherwise later, when you try to get into recovery, it will autoflash that PC36IMG file again (and you don’t want to go through that again) =p

  • Vineares

I don’t even have an Evo and I watched the videos. Do one for G1 and I’ll LOVE YOU FOREVER :O

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Good idea. I think my last video for the G1 will be how to root and load a custom ROM (CM6) onto it. My farewell video =)

      • Vineares

OMG YOU ARE THE BEST <3 <3 <3

I've been dying to root my G1 and have never been able to get through it. I've tried the unlocker's method and got all the way to flashing a custom ROM but for some reason it didn't work : /

  • http://Livpalm.com livpalm

Your videos have always been of great help. Ben rooting and flashing since the g1 and now with the EVO you’ve been of great help. The Cyanogen team is amazing and I’m thankful to Chavez for bridging the gap between us noobs and the potential of our phones.

PD… For those rooting their EVO’s for the first time, make sure you also flash the radio and wimax zips provided at the rom’s download page.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Thanks for reminding me! I’m gonna include the links in my last video! Thanks again!

  • http://Website Igor

You know that once you install the custom rom you have ROOT access included right?!

Meaning you can skip all the 20 min of rooting you just did and install the recovery image (root is not required to do that) and just install any rom you want. The point of root is in case you want it without installing a custom rom. If you install a custom rom than you don’t need to go through the process, it’s pointless.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Igor, that’s impossible without first rooting and then unlocking NAND. That’s the point of this whole process. If you just download ROM Manager without root and try to flash a custom recovery it wont work. You need to unlock NAND to you can write on the system img first. =p

  • Dutch

Well after this I think I woo attempt to root my EVO. First time ever doin this, wish me luck.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

GOOD LUCK!!! If you need any help just hit me up on Twitter! Cheers! =D

  • http://Website stefan

Nice videos. Is there a similar way to root the N1 that’s running froyo?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

The process for rooting the Evo is EXTREMELY easy. Its a lot simpler process than this. Mainly cuz all you have to do is unlock the bootloader and you can install a custom ROM. Real easy stuff =)

  • Dutch

Hey i cant seem to figure out how to get htc sync. I click on your link but i never see where i can choose the evo as the phone in the drop menu.

    • http://Website Igor

Well like I mentioned if you plan to install Cyanogen or any other Evo custom rom for that matter, you don’t really need to follow the 4 steps to root your phone.

      1. Install the Clockwork or Ra recovery straight away, no root access required.

      2. Flash any rom you’d like, following the steps Chris pointed out for flashing a rom from recovery.

      3. You have a rooted custom rom for your phone and it pawns iPhone’s behind in all ways that matter :P

      Cheers!

      • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

It doesn’t work that way. If you don’t unlock NAND then you wont be able to flash a custom recovery. That was the whole point of the video. Root AND unlock NAND so we can get a custom recovery on there and flash custom ROMs. =)

Chris: Thanks so much for the vids! They really helped me root my Evo! Please post comment if you get the Sprint apps loaded on top of Cyanogen. I want Sprint TV.

  • xray49er

Nice Job Chris. I have a couple of friends who have the evo I am trying to get them to root their phones i sent them your videos. IHave an incredible and the unrevoked method worked like a cham and took all of 3 minutes to do. i am not sure if unrevoked is that eay for the evo, maybe somebody tried it could let me know.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Unrevoked will give you root access in your stock ROM but it wont unlock NAND which is what you need to be able to flash recovery and do other cool stuff. It was REALLY easy though.

The reason I chose Simple Root method was cuz it does EVERYTHING and makes it all pretty easy (compared to rooting the G1) LOL

      • http://androidandme.com Darryl Williams

Can you do IhackIpods from youtubes way of unrevoked for rooting an EVO then do the Android WiFi tether ?????? That kid says he roots an EVO in 1 minute 45 seconds. Just want free internet for a laptop without paying $30.00 to Sprint.

  • http://www.technostraddle.com taylor

Is Unrevoked still the best bet for rooting on a mac? I was just about to take the plunge this afternoon, but I still can’t figure out if that’s the best/only way to go on a mac or if the newest version of the Unrevoked root is compatible with Cyanogen.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Unrevoked is mainly for giving you root on the stock ROM. Its not technically “full root” in terms of unlocking NAND and letting you flash a recovery. I tried Unrevoked before this method and it was fail. =/

  • sellescorp

thanks for your help man, you have any idea on how to do the google addons that they are talking about, someone says you have to flash them, do you put them on your sdcard and flash?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yessssssir! Watch the 3rd part of my video again. And do what I did. The steps you should always take when flashing ROMs….
      1. Wipe data
      2. Wipe cache
      3. Wipe dalvik cache
      4. Flash any zip from sd card and find the ROM you want to flash
      5. Flash Google addon apps if ROM requires it (Gapps)
      6. Reboot =)

  • sellescorp

thanks man im going to watch your videos and do it step by step so i’ll let you know how it goes, rooting.,.,.,begins.,.,.,.now!

  • sellescorp

i can’t find the sync for the evo in the website its not in the drop down box or images, anyone know how to get to it

Hey Chris Im having a problem installing the OTA Simpleroot Application after downloading it and unzipping it. My comupter gives me an error of “WindowsApplication1 has stopped working” everytime I go to install. I installed Microsoft .NET Framework as written and shown but then I uninstalled it seeing if it would resolve the error message I keep getting. What should I do I really wanna root my EVO. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

The OTA Simple Root application doesn’t need to install. It just needs to be opened.
Microsoft.NET and HTC Sync installed alright? If both those are good, OTA Simple Root should be able to open….?

      • http://Website Moneymike

Oh ok i didnt have it extracted fully I was opening it from the IZARC program before unzipping it.

  • sellescorp

back again when i do the first step it tells me my device is not found after enabling debugging, any ideas?

Device not found? On your computer? Try rebooting both your phone and computer. Sounds like the device drivers didn’t install right…?

can i use this vid to root my mytouch? i know tmo is giving us the 2.2 next month but its comming with the sense U/I and the only thing about sense ui i like is the big clock. would rather have the stock android 2.2 so im considering rooting.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Its a WHOLE different method involved in rooting the Mytouch (similar to the G1 method). Its kinda complicated and REALLY in depth. Do a Google search and be careful.

  • Dutch

hey chris when i go to flash zip from sdcard it says zip files not found. where do i go from here?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Did you put the Cyanogen ROM on your sd card? You have to make sure you choose “Flash ANY zip from SD” and not “Flash update.zip”

Make sure the ROM isn’t in any folders either..

Hey…I’ve been looking at the youtube video and at the end of the 3rd video it says (a step 5) “VERY VERY IMPORTANT” about flashing a recovery…how and why do I do that?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Click on the drop down bar on my videos. I explain a LOT of stuff on there.

Basically recovery is important cuz (like I said in my first video) its where you go if something goes wrong, or where you go to flash new ROMs, backup current ones, etc. Basically, as long as you have recovery, your phone isn’t bricked.

Using the Simple Root method, click on Extras in the menu and click on Flash recovery and choose RA_Recovery =)

  • http://Website sneakyice69

just wanted to say chris ur the best … love ur stuff man …. exspecially the evo video ….followed ur youtube videos since the first g1 video … u got a good personality and very humorous…. keep up the good work and videos man….. ROCK ON EMOGAMER :p

can you explain what the “PC36IMG file” is exactly? what is it and what does it do?

is this file needed if I wanted to “unroot”?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Well, PC36IMG that’s used in this case is a modified one used to give you a rooted rom, custom recovery, etc…
If you can find the stock PC36IMG and install that one, it will take you back to full stock again. =)

  • http://Website David

This might be a dumb question, but can you still connect to 4G?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

That’s actually a VERY GOOD question. I’ve heard of some people having problems with it but there is a fix floating around the XDA Forums.
When you follow my video’s and root you will need to flash (install) the latest radio update and WiMax to ensure 4G and all that is working properly.

Here’s a link for the flashable zip files:

After I rooted my phone, I cant get my wifi to work. It recognizes it but won’t let me connect, oh how I need my wifi working!

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

What ROM are you on? The good news is your WiFi isn’t broken. Its not a hardware thing.

The bad news is you probably need to flash another ROM where the WiFi is working in it.

Try CM6 (Android 2.2) or Fresh 1.0.1 ROM (Sense 2.1). Both of those are running on my Evo without any problems =D

  • Ratmuscle

Does the CyanogenMod 6 allow for 4G? I’ve got 4G at the house and would like to keep running with it……

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

There are some fixes for it floating around XDA for it. Usually simply upgrading your WiMax radio will do the trick. I’ve done it but can’t test cuz I don’t get 4G where I live =(

  • http://Website zachary

this maybe a dumb question but i am thinking about putting cyanogen on my phone but i want to know how do i bring it back to normal with root access if i decide i don’t like it. if i do the bring it back to stock way like you said how to will i have to re register the phone with sprint or will it still work?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

You will not have to re-register the phone with Sprint (not sure exactly what that means.. LOL)

And there is a way to go back. Simply READ the stuff I wrote in this article. The last sentence says, “Want to go back to stock? Here’s how:” and it provides a link for going back =)

Hey Chris I at step 4 of the EVO rooting process using SimpleRoot and for the longest time I haven’t gotten to the skateboarding android screen. It just says “Waiting on Phone Staring Part 2″. Is it supposed to take a long time because I though I did something wrong last night when it also took a long time so I started the process over today and I’ve being waiting for almost 20 minutes now. Please Help.

    Thanks.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

If at anytime something goes wrong in the rooting process simply delete/format your sd card, reboot and start over from step 1. =)

      • http://Website MoneyMike

Oh ok I got it to work. Thanks. For flashing roms can I keep and return to a ROM that I already setup with custom stuff and apps the way I like it right. Just use ROM Manager right. Im running Cyanogenmod’s Nightly Froyo ROM right now and just wanna test some other roms out but I like the way I have it setup now and would like to return back to it. Also I could sync my contacts with HTC Sync i had to used my Windows Contact and export it save it onto my SD card and import it into my phone. It that just a glitch with Cyanogenmod’s ROM or will i have to do that every time I flash a new ROM. Its not a problem I just wanna know. Im new to Android after leaving the Iphone but im getting the hang of it I think.

        Thanks again man.

Thank you for the instructions on how to root an HTC Evo. This was my first time rooting a phone, and without your instructions it wouldn’t of been possible. (I read XDA forums a lot but 150 + pages on instructions kind of gets annoying after awhile) – In the video you posted, did you flash your radios by any chance to see if your signal strength improved? For some reason I’ve noticed a big drop off in my signal strength in general. Other then that, the 7/28 ROM version came out that you used to flash your phone; when I did that it re-wiped everything and I had to setup my phone all over again? How would I prevent this? Thanks!

  • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

7/28 ROM version? Not sure what that means….?

One thing I didn’t cover in the video was flashing the upgraded radio and WiMax but here are the links for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485

Just flash them like you would a ROM but DON’T WIPE! Make sure to follow the onscreen directions as well. Whatever you do, don’t pull out your battery during this process (it may take awhile)

  • http://www.vishalkuber.com Vishal Kuber

If you have ROM Manger; there is a tab where you can choose download ROM, then choose CyanogenMod and from there it shows the latest build of CM6 – 07292010 @ 012304 –
When I downloaded that, it updated it but made everything back to factory default so I went back and restored to the previous version. I was just curious to know if there was a way to update the ROM w/o deleting your settings, etc.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Ohhhhhhhh!!!! Well, ROM Manager should have ASKED you if you wanted to wipe data and cache before applying the update. Whenever going from Cyanogen –> Cyanogen you never have to wipe (unless he specifically says so)
Same with Fresh ROMs. Fresh –> Fresh NO WIPE.
A lot of ROMs are doing that now… Its only when moving to different ROMs that you have to wipe but you can use apps like Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and all their saved data to take with onto another ROM =)

  • http://www.vishalkuber.com Vishal Kuber

Yea, so I shouldn’t of checked those two boxes then before it installed the new ROM. I understand now, thanks for the quick response. Getting these ROM’s is like having my Evo all over again. Good times.

Hey Chris Im running CyanogenMod’s ROM of Froyo and it seems like my signal strength is weaker I downloaded and zip the latest radio file from my SD card is that supposed to help the signal bar or did I do it wrong.

    Thanks.

    • http://Website Moneymike

      Comment

      • http://Website Moneymike

Well i did everything over I wiped down everything and I unzipped the latest radio and wixmax files first then I ran Cyanogenmod’s ROM and I restore my ROM to the way i had it before with the apps i like and stuff and now im getting 3 bars instead of just 2. I that normal for this ROM how many signal bars are you getting Chris?

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

The bars are represented differently between stock Android and Sense. If you upgraded your radio it should be EXACTLY the same =)

          • http://Website Moneymike

Well i did unzip and run the latest radio from XDA Developers site and got the installation complete message in recovery mode and I rebooted my phone and when it loads the most i get is 3 bars when there are 4 bars slots avavailable. Also I see that Sprint will be pushing Froyo 2.2 to select consumers to start off today. If i am one of the people who get the update will this affect my root and will I have to unroot my phone back to stock OS in order run the offical Android Froyo 2.2?

            Thanks in Advance.

  • http://Website Becca

Hey when it came to the step of rebooting the phone there was a image of a phone and files going in it. It wasnt the same picture that came up on your phone when the files where going in a box with an android on it to? what do you suggest I do.

I just purchased an evo which had the 1.47.651.1 update, now I’m trying to get my phone back to the factory settings and OS. How can I get this back and also unroot my phone?

Come back here and tell me when it works =)

      • http://Website mark

like dude r u going to help me or what, i cant get past step 1 device not found

  • http://Website Hardknockz

    Hey Thanks for the reply….

I tried the link that is supposed to unroot the phone but the process doesn’t work, and there are others who left comments there with the same issue. I’m not sure if it is because I had the 1.4XXX firmware or what. I get an error message every time I try to unroot my phone, and it will freeze on a black HTC screen and the only way I can get my phone to work again is to remove the battery. Well if I knew it was going to be impossible to turely unroot your phone once it had been rooted I wouldn’t have tried this.

Could you do a video showing the process of unrooting?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

You could always flash a stock ROM and when it prompts you that there’s an OTA available, just apply it and you’ll be 100% stock again.

There is ALWAYS a way to return to stock =)

  • http://Website don

when i try to flash the roms on my evo after step 4, it keeps saying it fails and theres not enough space in sd card. but i have 6.48gb of space on here. what am i doing wrong? please help

  • http://Website boliviano

Ok so after I flash recovery should I load, the stock rooted rom for instance, or do I need to flash the radios first and flash a rom?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Once you load a recovery you can flash whatever ROM you want (Sense 2.1, Sense 2.2, CM6, etc.) but once you are done flashing a ROM, you should then flash the updated Radio and WiMax (4G) to make sure your phone is 100% up to date. =)

  • http://Website Hardknockz

Me again… I just relocked my phone and everything is working ok. The link turned out to be good, you just have to do a little something else that is really simply. Here is a link that helped me get back on track… just to have for future reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7153173&postcount=16

By the way, nice video and the rooting process worked like a charm for me

  • http://Website Moneymike

Hey Chris the unroot method you have up didnt work for me. I have my evo rooted using OTA Simpleroot and the first ROM I flashed was Cyanogenmod’s Nightly ROM i wanted to go back to stock since HTC was finally bringing Froyo 2.2 to the EVO. Ever since I rooted my phone and ran Cyanogenmod’s Nightly ROM i have been unable to use HTC Sync on my comupter. Also Im still not getting all of my signal strength bars still I wiped and re flashed the lastest radio and Im still missing one bar even when I go outside. Before my root in my home I would get all of my bars. Im currently running the Froyo 2.2 rooted ROM since I was unable to get my phone unrooted. I just want to be able to go back and unroot my phone if I cant get all of my signal bars to work on the phone rooted as is. Is it the ROM or is it the way im flashing the zip files. Your help would be greatly appreciated man.

    Thanks.

    • http://Website Hardknockz

      What’s up MoneyMike…..

I just unrooted my phone a couple days ago after rooting it. The link does work, you just have to do an extra step once you get to the point when you try to install the stock ROM and the phone appears to have frozen on the black HTC screen…. at the point just go through the process of re-installing the stock ROM and it should push through and continue the installation.

      • http://Website Moneymike

        Thanks. Hardknockz I’ll try it.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I can’t say if missing 1 bar is cuz of the radio especially if you updated it. Have you noticed degraded call quality, dropped calls or slower download speeds because of it?

Anyway, if you want to go back to stock there are a bunch of different methods you can use.

One would be the RUU method that I linked above.

Another would be to flash the stock PC36IMG file similar to what we did during the rooting process.

Another would be to simply flash a stock ROM and once you get prompted that there is an OTA, apply it and you’ll be all up to date and 100% stock =)

      Happy unrooting! =D

      • http://Website boliviano

So if I have the unofficial stock rooted 2.2 rom and I need to unroot I can just apply the official update once it’s released and it’ll just break root and not brick my phone?

  • http://Website jeremy

where can i get the link to supersonic? i go go the the recovery part under zip to sd card but cant find it

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Are you talking about the Cyanogen ROM to flash? You have to download it and put it on your sd card then go back into recovery…

I appreciate what you have done for the EVO crew. I have a few questions.
    1. Do you have a donation area. If you can help me I would like to send a few dollars.
    2. Where is a place you would recommend to find or understand flashing a ROM?
    3. I don’t really get that ROM part in your video. Did you put them on your SD card beforehand?
    4. Is there a ROM that you recommend that helps battery?
    5. Where if possible could I find a way to get the wireless hotspot to work for free? I got tethering to work, but the wireless will not work.
If you could direct me to an area with this information it would be a huge help. Thanks again for being the help to finally after 6 plus hours trying with other blogs to ROOT my phone.

  • http://Website ScottV

Video needs to be updated since none of those steps are related to the new version of Simple Root.

  • http://Website Anubis13

So if you applied the unrooted 2.2 OTA from sprint and you want to use simple root I assume you could use the RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1 exe to restore to stock Sprint eclaire and then root with simple root and flash a stock, rooted froyo 3.26.651.6 rom to then have your rooted 2.2 Froyo that looks like the Sprint OTA update but rooted?

I’ve actually got the same problem as LRockCT.

I’ve rooted via another method: Universal Androot – v1.6.1 for my HTC Magic 32b (Voda AU).

However via this method, I keep running into something along the lines of:
    “access permissions denied” etc.

I can’t boot into recovery with Amon_Ra’s recovery image v1.7.0G.img in order to install a custom rom.

    Any help would be great!
    Cheers mate.

My biggest problem was the Simple Root program, there was only two steps which was very confusing, and going to the screen with the skating robots it said “program too old” or something like that. Through this whole prossess all i’ve done is lost my contacts and apps. I was better off with how my Phone was already. I really hope you write me back to diccuss the problems. I just got a older 4g evo and was trying to find Simple root but have not been able to find it through the link you posted… Does anyone know what happened to the link or of another link to find the program?

  • Enrique

Hey the links for easy root are dead, and htc sync too.

Hey the links for easy root are dead, and htc sync too. what can i do??

  • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I don’t think you can use this process for an Incredible. They use different files and all that. Might have to Google “How to Root HTC Incredible” and see what pops up…

And oh yeaaaaah… Nandroid backup! Might have to make a separate video for that. I want to show people how to do it the easy way using ROM Manager =)

  1. sandraGuest 5 years ago

Thanks I was just thinking about this, this morning. And why would I need to root. It looks so complicated. Not sure I want to take the risk.

    • There’s really little risk involved and its SUPER easy to get back to stock (see link above). Easier than it is to root! LOL
Just decide for yourself if the pro’s out weigh the cons for you. And you have me to walk you through the process ;)

Anyone seen this? What does this mean for android?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/27/technology/27iphone.html?_r=1&ref=technology

    • Nithin JinoGuest 5 years ago

      Nothing.

Jailbreaking has been around before Android was here and since Android is now selling more than the iPhone, making Jailbreaking “legal” won’t change the fact that Android destroys the iPhone OS or “iOS” in every way, shape, and form.

      • Yeah, great, that was helpful…. Perhaps this ruling may have positive repercussions for those who want to root their android devices…

  4. SimonGuest 5 years ago

    • There’s no TRUE development without Cyanogen backing a device.

  5. hey chris i your youtube videos are very helpful, i love my evo and think its the best smartphone on the market.,.,.,.i had some questions about your rooting videos though.,.,.1. are you supposed to back up your files before the whole process so you can save your contacts, apps, music etc and if so how (nandorid?). and also on your last video (3 of 3) there was a comment at the end that said we should delete some kind of image could you elaborate on that.,.,.thanks for the help and keep up the good work man

    • You can backup your stuff using which ever method you like.

  6. I don’t even have an Evo and I watched the videos. Do one for G1 and I’ll LOVE YOU FOREVER :O

    • Good idea. I think my last video for the G1 will be how to root and load a custom ROM (CM6) onto it. My farewell video =)

      • OMG YOU ARE THE BEST <3 <3 <3

I've been dying to root my G1 and have never been able to get through it. I've tried the unlocker's method and got all the way to flashing a custom ROM but for some reason it didn't work : /

  7. livpalmGuest 5 years ago

  8. IgorGuest 5 years ago

    • Igor, that’s impossible without first rooting and then unlocking NAND. That’s the point of this whole process. If you just download ROM Manager without root and try to flash a custom recovery it wont work. You need to unlock NAND to you can write on the system img first. =p

  9. Well after this I think I woo attempt to root my EVO. First time ever doin this, wish me luck.

  10. stefanGuest 5 years ago

Nice videos. Is there a similar way to root the N1 that’s running froyo?

    • The process for rooting the Evo is EXTREMELY easy. Its a lot simpler process than this. Mainly cuz all you have to do is unlock the bootloader and you can install a custom ROM. Real easy stuff =)

  11. Hey i cant seem to figure out how to get htc sync. I click on your link but i never see where i can choose the evo as the phone in the drop menu.

    • IgorGuest 5 years ago

Well like I mentioned if you plan to install Cyanogen or any other Evo custom rom for that matter, you don’t really need to follow the 4 steps to root your phone.

      1. Install the Clockwork or Ra recovery straight away, no root access required.

      2. Flash any rom you’d like, following the steps Chris pointed out for flashing a rom from recovery.

      3. You have a rooted custom rom for your phone and it pawns iPhone’s behind in all ways that matter :P

      Cheers!

      • It doesn’t work that way. If you don’t unlock NAND then you wont be able to flash a custom recovery. That was the whole point of the video. Root AND unlock NAND so we can get a custom recovery on there and flash custom ROMs. =)

  12. mazzmoneyGuest 5 years ago

u helped so much. i rooted a few hours and love it. i messed up the first few times and then found your vids and they were better than every other one i found.

This is by far the most easiest way I’ve seen to root your EVO and install a stock rom. MANY THANKS!

  21. Hey Chris thanks for the vid on rooting the EVO, verry helpful. I have a question can you go back to the stock ROM and still keep the phone rooted? i flashed the fresh 1.0.1 ROM but the whole not syncing FB to contacts is not working for me but i dont want to screw up my phone. b.t.w First time droid user.

  22. Anyone from Georgia?? i pay you to root my Evo…lol…im so for real lol

  23. xmusketeerGuest 5 years ago

Chris: Thanks so much for the vids! They really helped me root my Evo! Please post comment if you get the Sprint apps loaded on top of Cyanogen. I want Sprint TV.

    • Unrevoked will give you root access in your stock ROM but it wont unlock NAND which is what you need to be able to flash recovery and do other cool stuff. It was REALLY easy though.

The reason I chose Simple Root method was cuz it does EVERYTHING and makes it all pretty easy (compared to rooting the G1) LOL

      • Darryl WilliamsGuest 5 years ago

Can you do IhackIpods from youtubes way of unrevoked for rooting an EVO then do the Android WiFi tether ?????? That kid says he roots an EVO in 1 minute 45 seconds. Just want free internet for a laptop without paying $30.00 to Sprint.

  25. taylorGuest 5 years ago

Is Unrevoked still the best bet for rooting on a mac? I was just about to take the plunge this afternoon, but I still can’t figure out if that’s the best/only way to go on a mac or if the newest version of the Unrevoked root is compatible with Cyanogen.

    • Unrevoked is mainly for giving you root on the stock ROM. Its not technically “full root” in terms of unlocking NAND and letting you flash a recovery. I tried Unrevoked before this method and it was fail. =/

  26. thanks for your help man, you have any idea on how to do the google addons that they are talking about, someone says you have to flash them, do you put them on your sdcard and flash?

    • Yessssssir!
      6. Reboot =)

  27. thanks man im going to watch your videos and do it step by step so i’ll let you know how it goes, rooting.,.,.,begins.,.,.,.now!

  28. i can’t find the sync for the evo in the website its not in the drop down box or images, anyone know how to get to it

    Thanks.

    • The OTA Simple Root application doesn’t need to install. It just needs to be opened.
Microsoft.NET and HTC Sync installed alright? If both those are good, OTA Simple Root should be able to open….?

      • MoneymikeGuest 5 years ago

Oh ok i didnt have it extracted fully I was opening it from the IZARC program before unzipping it.

  30. back again when i do the first step it tells me my device is not found after enabling debugging, any ideas?

    • Device not found? On your computer? Try rebooting both your phone and computer. Sounds like the device drivers didn’t install right…?

  31. can i use this vid to root my mytouch? i know tmo is giving us the 2.2 next month but its comming with the sense U/I and the only thing about sense ui i like is the big clock. would rather have the stock android 2.2 so im considering rooting.

    • Its a WHOLE different method involved in rooting the Mytouch (similar to the G1 method). Its kinda complicated and REALLY in depth. Do a Google search and be careful.

  32. hey chris when i go to flash zip from sdcard it says zip files not found. where do i go from here?

    • Did you put the Cyanogen ROM on your sd card? You have to make sure you choose “Flash ANY zip from SD” and not “Flash update.zip”

Make sure the ROM isn’t in any folders either..

it still has all the sprint apps, how do you get rid of those?

    • Cyanogen’s ROMs are stock Android with NO Sprint apps. You could always install those too if you’d like. I have Sprint TV and Voicemail working perfectly on my device….

  34. Dan GuzmanGuest 5 years ago

Thanks for the video. I already rooted my phone but didn’t know about the nightly builds for froyo on the evo. I know it’s still in beta beta, but so far so good!!

  35. RatmuscleGuest 5 years ago

Hey…I’ve been looking at the youtube video and at the end of the 3rd video it says (a step 5) “VERY VERY IMPORTANT” about flashing a recovery…how and why do I do that?

    • Click on the drop down bar on my videos.

  36. sneakyice69Guest 5 years ago

just wanted to say chris ur the best … love ur stuff man …. exspecially the evo video ….followed ur youtube videos since the first g1 video … u got a good personality and very humorous…. keep up the good work and videos man….. ROCK ON EMOGAMER :p

  37. kmxGuest 5 years ago

can you explain what the “PC36IMG file” is exactly? what is it and what does it do?

is this file needed if I wanted to “unroot”?

    • Well, PC36IMG that’s used in this case is a modified one used to give you a rooted rom, custom recovery, etc…
If you can find the stock PC36IMG and install that one, it will take you back to full stock again. =)

  38. DavidGuest 5 years ago

This might be a dumb question, but can you still connect to 4G?

    • That’s actually a VERY GOOD question.

    • What ROM are you on? The good news is your WiFi isn’t broken. Its not a hardware thing.

The bad news is you probably need to flash another ROM where the WiFi is working in it.

Try CM6 (Android 2.2) or Fresh 1.0.1 ROM (Sense 2.1). Both of those are running on my Evo without any problems =D

  40. Does the CyanogenMod 6 allow for 4G? I’ve got 4G at the house and would like to keep running with it……

    • There are some fixes for it floating around XDA for it. Usually simply upgrading your WiMax radio will do the trick. I’ve done it but can’t test cuz I don’t get 4G where I live =(

  41. zacharyGuest 5 years ago

this maybe a dumb question but i am thinking about putting cyanogen on my phone but i want to know how do i bring it back to normal with root access if i decide i don’t like it. if i do the bring it back to stock way like you said how to will i have to re register the phone with sprint or will it still work?

    • You will not have to re-register the phone with Sprint (not sure exactly what that means..

    Thanks.

    • If at anytime something goes wrong in the rooting process simply delete/format your sd card, reboot and start over from step 1. =)

      • MoneyMikeGuest 5 years ago

My Evo won’t go through part 3 out of 3 because it shows up on my screen that the main version is older and so the update fails. What does it mean by main version in older? And what do i do about it?

    • Not sure what that means but that happened to me once too. Simply format/delete EVERYTHING on your sd card and start over from Step 1. Everything should work then =)

  45. for some reason i can’t sync the evo with htc and when i try this simple root method im stuck at step 1 because it says “error device not found”. my device drivers say that the installation was successful and ive tried various versions of the sync download.,.,.,.ne one have this problem before? until i get passed this im stuck so thanks for your help in advance.,.,.,

  46. VKuberGuest 5 years ago

Thanks!

  47. 7/28 ROM version? Not sure what that means….?

One thing I didn’t cover in the video was flashing the upgraded radio and WiMax but here are the links for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485

Just flash them like you would a ROM but DON’T WIPE! Make sure to follow the onscreen directions as well. Whatever you do, don’t pull out your battery during this process (it may take awhile)

  48. Vishal KuberGuest 5 years ago

    • Ohhhhhhhh!!!!

  49. Vishal KuberGuest 5 years ago

Yea, so I shouldn’t of checked those two boxes then before it installed the new ROM. I understand now, thanks for the quick response. Getting these ROM’s is like having my Evo all over again. Good times.

      • MoneymikeGuest 5 years ago

Well i did everything over I wiped down everything and I unzipped the latest radio and wixmax files first then I ran Cyanogenmod’s ROM and I restore my ROM to the way i had it before with the apps i like and stuff and now im getting 3 bars instead of just 2. I that normal for this ROM how many signal bars are you getting Chris?

        • The bars are represented differently between stock Android and Sense. If you upgraded your radio it should be EXACTLY the same =)

          • MoneymikeGuest 5 years ago

Well i did unzip and run the latest radio from XDA Developers site and got the installation complete message in recovery mode and I rebooted my phone and when it loads the most i get is 3 bars when there are 4 bars slots avavailable. Also I see that Sprint will be pushing Froyo 2.2 to select consumers to start off today. If i am one of the people who get the update will this affect my root and will I have to unroot my phone back to stock OS in order run the offical Android Froyo 2.2?

            Thanks in Advance.

  58. HardknockzGuest 5 years ago

    • You could always flash a stock ROM and when it prompts you that there’s an OTA available, just apply it and you’ll be 100% stock again.

There is ALWAYS a way to return to stock =)

  59. donGuest 5 years ago

when i try to flash the roms on my evo after step 4, it keeps saying it fails and theres not enough space in sd card. but i have 6.48gb of space on here. what am i doing wrong? please help

  60. bolivianoGuest 5 years ago

Ok so after I flash recovery should I load, the stock rooted rom for instance, or do I need to flash the radios first and flash a rom?

    • Once you load a recovery you can flash whatever ROM you want (Sense 2.1, Sense 2.2, CM6, etc.) but once you are done flashing a ROM, you should then flash the updated Radio and WiMax (4G) to make sure your phone is 100% up to date. =)

  61. HardknockzGuest 5 years ago

  62. MoneymikeGuest 5 years ago

    Thanks.

    • HardknockzGuest 5 years ago

      What’s up MoneyMike…..

I just unrooted my phone a couple days ago after rooting it. The link does work, you just have to do an extra step once you get to the point when you try to install the stock ROM and the phone appears to have frozen on the black HTC screen…. at the point just go through the process of re-installing the stock ROM and it should push through and continue the installation.

      • MoneymikeGuest 5 years ago

        Thanks. Hardknockz I’ll try it.

    • I can’t say if missing 1 bar is cuz of the radio especially if you updated it.

      • bolivianoGuest 5 years ago

So if I have the unofficial stock rooted 2.2 rom and I need to unroot I can just apply the official update once it’s released and it’ll just break root and not brick my phone?

  63. jeremyGuest 5 years ago

where can i get the link to supersonic? i go go the the recovery part under zip to sd card but cant find it

    • Huh? Link to supersonic?

      Go go the the?

Are you talking about the Cyanogen ROM to flash? You have to download it and put it on your sd card then go back into recovery…

      • jeremyGuest 5 years ago

Thanks I got it working. My 4g is not working. Going to try and download the radio update I found on here to see if that helps.

      • hey another member had the same problem and so do i. How come when I tried to root my evo..it ends up saying Main version Older..Failed update..Can you help me out.. Im thinking its when i hook up my phone to my pc do i only charge it, mount it as disk drive or usb tethering?

chris, your videos were awesome. I am a noob at this android stuff and following your videos was pretty easy. I have reading on some of the forums that I will need to do a nandroid backup to return to my stock rom or previous rom. How do I go about doing this on my rooted evo?

    thanks.

  68. KenGuest 5 years ago

    Noob here,
I would like to root my evo 4g to get the tethering and thats it.
I use a sprint wireless card for all of my internet use right now and use about 3gb a month and would like to get rid of it and just use the phone.
Will I be happy just using the phone for all my internet access?

  69. FuzinglivewireGuest 5 years ago

I am following the steps exactly but once I get to the bootloader screen and it does what it has to do it says (main version is older! Update fail! Do you want to reboot device?) How can I avoid this or fix this issue to continue with the root?

  70. anthony mGuest 5 years ago

ok well im still thinking about rooting it will my warranty expire or whatever.
For example if i was to take my evo rooted to sprint for a repair would they still repair?

  71. Chris FuentesGuest 5 years ago

I was going to root my evo but I kind of updated to android 2.2 before I learned that you cant root once you update. Is there a way I can go back to 2.1??

  72. ScottVGuest 5 years ago

Video needs to be updated since none of those steps are related to the new version of Simple Root.

  73. Anubis13Guest 5 years ago

  74. so i updated to the new froyo. do i have to wait for a new version to ROOT my phone?
    evo 4g <<<

  75. ok iv been trying to root my evo 2.2 but with no luck I keep getting a file older version on the bootleg screen can you help please

    CANT ROOT MY EVO 4G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok I’ve gotten the new Simple Root One click, got the new update

When the program tries to copy the files, it fails and says the permission was denied to copy it
So I manually copied over to the SD card, still doesnt recognize when scanning upon boot loader
So Im at a lost here what do I do???????

    I WANT TO ROOT BAD!!!!

  79. attnGuest 5 years ago

I am very upset with this video and how you treat your viewers. I went thro the video step by step and still didnt get my Phone rooted. And hopefully you can make a new video that fix the problems
