Verizon Droid X unboxing and mini review!!! The Sprint Evo Killer??

The Droid X came out this week and I was lucky enough for a good friend of mine to let me play with his the day he picked it up (thanks Andrew). I have been pretty excited about this phone since it was leaked and have always found Motorola’s designs for their Droid phones to be fresh and compelling. I knew from the get-go that this phone was going to be HUGE for Verizon, as well as Android, so I couldn’t wait to finally get my hands-on time with the phone.

Unlike the first Droid, this one isn’t running off of stock Android UI. Instead Motorola decided to throw in their own Motoblur UI which can also be found in some of their other more popular handsets like the Cliq on T-Mobile or Devour also on Verizon. I always felt like Motoblur was a step up on those devices seeing how they were stuck on Android 1.5 and 1.6 respectively but on the Droid X it seems to be a step BACK from stock Android 2.1. Icons look cartoony and the UI can be choppy on the homescreen. Some apps like the Gallery look HIDEOUSLY plain and I really just don’t understand the need for Motoblur anymore. I think Motorola could have done better by just by adding some of their own custom apps into stock Android. And since Motorola went to great lengths into locking their bootloader, it looks like their is little chance for root access or loading any custom stock ROMs onto the device anytime soon.

Overall I feel like its a solid device and fits perfectly into the Droid line of phones from Verizon. The screen is large and bright. Video and audio quality is exceptional at 720p and 3 microphones. The design of the phone may be hit or miss for some. I’ve always REALLY liked the design of the phone seeing how NO ONE can confuse it for an iPhone *cough* Evo *cough*. The physical buttons along the bottom are a godsend. Having owned an Evo since day 1, I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to accidentally press the capacitive buttons and it happens frequently. The processor is also right up there with Samsung’s Hummingbird so 3D gaming looks flawless.

The one thing Motorola left out on the phone is a front facing camera which almost seems intentional. I’m wondering if it was more a choice from Verizon not wanting to bog down their network with video calling right now? In any case, it’s still a solid phone and a great Evo contender although the Evo still tops it with front facing cam and Sense UI (can also be hacked to run stock Android 2.2). I still think Verizon customers should be happy with the Droid X and their unrivaled network and you can also hold the phone with your left hand (no bumper/duct tape required).

Not to knock this guy or anything, but the Droid X is being modded. It’s being Rooted. and Home Replacements get rid of The Blur apps. It’s not Moto-blur entirely, just many of it’s main features.

You could use more professionalism in your videos. Especially if you want the publics attention.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

      Hello, Wade.
      WOW… where to begin….
If you watch my video again, you will notice I said, “RIGHT NOW.” the Droid X is not rootable and heavily locked down. More so than normal. The point I was trying to make is that Motorola went to greater lengths than usual to lock down their bootloader. Of course, things change everyday and as you stated, people are already working on root and modding the phone. Not surprising. I hope it works. =)

As far as the Home Replacement apps. All those apps do is replace the Launcher (or Homescreen) with another. The icons remain the same. The apps themselves remain the same (Motoblur). And that’s not good. Motoblur UI is MORE than just a launcher. And that was my problem with the software on the phone.

And you’re right. My videos are no where NEAR professional. They’re not supposed to be. They are usually me. On a couch. Giving my opinion and trying to help people make informed purchases. My personality is naturally pretty silly and light hearted and it shows in my videos. I could make them more “professional” but there are a MILLION other videos for that. My videos are uniquely ME. And they already receive enough attention. =)

Thanks for your comment. Have a good day.

Nicely done Chris…and I agree with your points on the Droid X.

Droid X didn’t kill the evo 4g only, it even nab the iPhone 4 with a matchup

  • DJ

Yes, the Motoblur UI is ugly and bad, but that’s why we have LauncherPro/ADW Launcher.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

My problem with Motoblur isn’t even so much with the launcher and choppy app drawer. Its with the icons (they look cheap and cartoony) and the Motoblur apps (Gallery, etc.)
Using an app replacement such as ADW or Launcher Pro wont change any of this. =(

Hopefully the awesome Android modding community can root and hack this bad boy soon =)

      • http://n/a matt

all I know is that Launcher Pro did a lot for my Moment. and I am looking forward to the Epic. I like hard keyboards so I didn’t even think about the evo.

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I’ve been a physical keyboard fanboy since ’99. LOL I was surprised to see how easy it was to type on a 4.3 inch screen. I’m pretty quick but still not l337 like I was on my G1…

That Samsung Epic is REALLY gonna test my love for the Evo, I can tell you that much… LOL

      • http://n/a matt

and to think I didn’t even watch the vid, quit ur bitchin’ everyone makes their own bed, what may be good for one man mean it is good for another.

its android 4 life, now that I’ve all the reviews, and how talk about sammie as a company,
and that they are so to release updates. this is my first sammie, since back in the 90′s, so I didn’t know that sammie made shady/flaky hardware. and I had a htc mogul before the moment and hated the windows os. when I heard sprint was getting android I knew I was going to switch phones.

what I hated about the htc at the time was the bulkiness of the phone. but I did like the spacing of the keyboard, and I didn’t like the lighting or the feel of the keys, but having one for the 3yrs you get used to it.

now I am going to read about those 2 htc’s mentioned in the reviews. and that means I maybe keeping my moment a while longer, and my heart was set on that Epic.

    Evo>DroidX

  • http://Website jeff

evo killer my ass, i went into a verizon store with my evo and compared them and my evo smokes that sluggish thing they call a phone!!

  • http://Website Mike

    Ah, where to begin:

    1. The EVO gets confused for the Iphone. That’s news to me. Considering it almost has an inch bigger of a screen and also runs HTC Sense with looks nothing like the IOS home screen….don’t know where you are trying to go with that. It seems from your negative comments about the EVO that are all over your article AND in the title on the Droid X, you have something really against the EVO, and your bias shows here. Please try to be more objective, or go work for Engadget.

    2. “The processor is also right up there with Samsung’s Hummingbird.” Wrong. The processor maybe considering it’s the same speed, but not the GPU. Nothing beats the Samsung at the moment. For benchmarking and also real-life performance proof, hit up this link. http://www.androidcentral.com/att-samsung-captivate-benchmarks-and-graphicsgaming-test

As you can see, the Droid X really stutters on some of these tests.

    3. You spent most of the article knocking the Motorblur UI, even going so far as to say it hinders device performance and is a step backwards from vanilla Android 2.1, and then in not many words claim it to be so totally awesome that it’s an EVO killer.

So really, I think this article is more about how you hate/hated the EVO rather than a good objective unboxing and mini-review of the Droid X.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

      Hey, Mike.
      Ahhhhh… Where to begin.

1.) I’m not saying tech/enthusiast or iPhone users confuse the the Evo for an iPhone. Just your normal average joe or soccer mom does. HTC really did model the general look of the phone after the iPhone. Just look at the white version of the Evo! Where do you think they got that idea from?? I don’t think HTC will even deny that. LOL
And in case you haven’t seen my other video or countless Tweets, I have 5 HTC Evo’s on my Family Plan and even convinced 2 of my friends to drop their iPhones in favor of one =)
In my humble opinion, the Evo is still the phone to beat right now. Although I’m sure many people will argue its the Galaxy S or even the N1. I still think your average consumer will favor a front facing cam over a great GPU or awesome development from the Android community. But that’s just me. =p

2.) I didn’t think my words would be dissected or taken quite so literal. When I said “up there” I meant that it has a POWERFUL GPU (still second to the Hummingbird) but above that of the Snapdragon. The OMAP ain’t no joke.

3.) Yes, Motoblur UI is actually a step BACK from stock Android 2.1 UI. There is little to no need for it. The cartoony icons, choppy app drawer, ugly apps (Gallery, etc) are not pushing the OS further. Just making it look cheap.
One more time, I never ONCE said the Droid X or its Motoblur UI is an Evo killer. I have no idea where you got that from. Did you even watch the video?? In my opinion, Sense is still far superior to Motoblur. The Evo (even from my friend who has a Droid X) is still superior hardware and software wise, to that of the Droid X. Most people will take a front facing cam over a superior GPU. But that’s just my opinion. I love my Evo. More than any other phone out at the moment. But you know what I love more? Android. And I don’t like people messing with it =p

Just because I say another phone is great, doesn’t mean another is crap or even that I like it more.

      Sorry for the confusion.
      Love,
      -Chris

      • http://Website Elitebattlefield

        Chris,

I think your intention to grab the attention of the audience kinda backfired in a way. Yes literature can often come across different to the reader than if you were actually giving your options through a speech. I know the second part of your title was pitched more as a question. People still swear by the G1 and MyTouch Slide…go figure. Why? Because those are still good devices. Yes there outdated, but they were the pioneers on this thing called Android. The thing with the iPhone is interesting though.

Yes Mike the OMAP is 2nd in command ahead of the Snapdragon, sorry.

Chris it seems your response to Mike should’ve been your origional statement. I think it would’ve come across better maybe. Who knows.

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I don’t think anything would have gotten through to “Mike.” He’s just confused. LOL =p

    • http://Website Elitebattlefield

Stole the comments right out of my mouth Mike. I think people who write for these sites should in fact focus more on hard comparisons as Chris started to do in his last few sentences. Look they’re both great devices. The front facing camera doesn’t really steal anything from the Droid X in my opinion.

      • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I don’t think it steals anything away from the Droid X but I do think its a feature people want (thanks to the Evo and iPhone).
Even my friend who lent me his Droid X for this video stated that he was disappointed the Droid X did not have a front facing camera “like that phone on Sprint or the iPhone.” His words.

      • http://Website matt

The reason my girlfriends N1 didnt get upgraded to a Vibrant is soley because of lack of flash. Thats it. Pretty pathetic a top of the line phone, couldnt even have a flash. That and no track ball.

How is the track ball being phased out? Shits rediculous. That little ball has helped me correct misspelled words time and time again. I hate finger fucking the screen trying to fixed messed up spaces from swype and what not on my EVO. That, and trackball wake is god.

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

LOL!!!!!!!! That was so true!!!!! Hahahahaha…

        • http://Website Wade C

Swype from the Swype Key to the SYM key, and it toggles the Editing Keyboard. This gives you arrows and keys like Home/End and makes editing really easy. I was also missing the trackball on my Vibrant until I read about this little trick.

          • http://Website Jason

That is the best comment I’ve seen in days! I was missing the trackball on the G1 huge until O read this.

            Thanks for the tip!

      • http://Website thabigchorizo

Got the vibrant and it is badass. My bro who has had every iPhone was trying to find bad things to say about it. No flash, OK! Who cares! Facetime over wifi! Sure! Superamoled looks better than his retina. My Live wallpapers make his wall look so dull. Avatar is the killer, he was speechless but to prideful to admit. Still love him though. Love android on phones and apple on my laptops. But if with at&t iPhone gets all the support.

    • http://Website Elitebattlefield

Well, it’s to bad Samsungs sales won’t surpass that of the Droid series. HTC stills has the market by 4%. Don’t talk shit when you’re still losing the game. But I do like that screen though and the gaming experience. lol

Seriously it is a great device but in my hands it feels light as a feather. That tells me cheap. If you break down the cost of the phone 60% went into the screen, 35% went to the processor, and the rest to the phone misc hardware.

Sorry to all EVO and Droid X owners, but yes since the Galaxy series will have the 2nd Generation hardware, by right it will wear the performance crown. and it doesn’t even have Froyo 2.2, The benchmarks already say so.

I have heard this more than once now…

  • http://Website wallingsworth

this ‘review’ was immensely retarded. next time do some research before you try to compare / bash other phones specs. this should have been a review on the Droid x. not your deluded opinions about the other phones mentioned.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

What other phones did I “bash” again?? LOL I don’t remember talking bad about any phone… I pretty much love them (Android) all =)

      • http://Website watbetch

I thought I heard front facing camera at least 2 times. It’s not a necessary feature, but apparently since the HTC Evo has it all phones have to have it?

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Its kind of the MUST HAVE feature your average consumer wants after seeing that the Evo has it and iPhone 4.

Its kinda necessary now…. And SOON, just about most high end phones will have them =)

          • http://Website dme

Seconded. When writing a list of the newest, hottest, biggest cell phone features for the holiday season 2010, a front facing camera will be on there.

If you don’t compare a device to something else, how will you ever know how good it is? I seriously do not understand that. Everyone expects a review to be like this, “This phone has a good screen.” End of story. You don’t need to talk about any other device with a 4.3″ display, and you certainly don’t need to mention the BEST SELLING MOBILE DEVICE OF ALL TIME. Well excuse me, but uhhhh…. Good compared to what? If no comparison is made, especially to similar model devices on the market today (while not mentioning devices that some random person deems incomparable (see anti-Apple addicts)), they there is no standard upon which the word “good” can be applied. I don’t see a device and think, hey this looks good. I think, hey this device looks good compared to INSERT POS DEVICE HERE. Or even, hey, this device really lacks when compared to other devices that have BASICALLY THE SAME SPECS AND SAME PRICE RANGE.

This is what a review is close minded people. There is different levels of quality among every aspect of mobile hardware, and the only want to differentiate… it’s by comparison. Things can and will be better, just as they can and will be worse. There is only one way to know.

            P.S.

What’s good for one person, is terrible for another.

          • http://Website Dru

I third it! I bought the Droid X and when I did, I was thinking “Damn I wish it had a front front facing camera…”

Remember when the first camera phone came out? I think everyone wanted a phone with a camera… Wasn’t necessary… it’s a phone… but everyone wanted one. Now phones are coming out with front facing cameras. It isn’t necessary… but everyone’s gonna want one.

        • http://Website Kolb

I was thinking the same thing. Since when did video chatting become such a relevant feature to smart phones. Apparently all things EVO are awesome, and all the areas which it is lacking are irrelevant. Do you people even realize how unbelievingly bias that is?

          • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Front facing cams and video chatting has been relevant for awhile now. Just ask China or Europe.
They’ve been doing it for YEARS on even the most crappiest of phones. The US is just now starting to catch on…
I can’t believe some people really think video chatting is not future. 2 years from now, we’ll look back and say “I can’t believe we had phones WITHOUT it.” =p

          • http://Website Kolb

            @Christopher Chavez
Actually, you just helped proved my point, because despite video chatting being available to foreign markets for years, the tech has never really taken off. Its going to take more devices and more bandwidth for it to take off here in the States. Most people I know would rather use SMS or social networking than to even make a phone call. I’m sure you, and others reading this know many that feel the same, and I don’t think the EVO does much to change this mentality.

Ok I am tired of all the talk about which phone is better. Do you guys really believe that some who’s had an Iphone will go to a different phone? Do you think anyone who is with a certain carried will go just because someone online is telling them what phone”they” like?? Come quit all the comparing, trying to say what will kill what and just give the specs and show a video of the device. I was on T-Mobile, I had the G1 and the Behold 2. I left T-Mobile and went to Sprint to get the Evo. Why, because it is a whole lot better than the Behold 2. I wanted to to back to Sprint becauseT-Mobile didn’t have any good phones. Don’t tell me about the Vibrant because after the Behold 2 I will not purchase another Samsung device. I am happy with my Evo and can’t no body change my mind about that.

I did do my “homework.” I never said the OMAP was SUPERIOR to Hummingbird. Just that its “UP THERE” with it. Meaning that the GPU is much better than the Snapdragon’s even though it comes in second to Samsung’s Hummingbird. I know my stuff.

Honestly, I think that most of us that keep up with Android sites already know everything that there is to know about these phones. We are more informed than the general consumer, most of us have phones running Android, and we have our own biases and preferences.

With that said, I enjoy Chris’ videos for the entertainment value of them. Every once in a while, I might see something I didn’t know about, like “The Predator” screen indicators. Some times, I won’t learn anything new, but I’ll get a few laughs out of them.

Keep in mind, it’s one guy’s opinion, and opinions are like @$$holes. Everyone’s got one, and they all stink.

Galaxy S phones are awesome for gaming. Straight up capable of pushing out Xbox graphics with ease… But not everyone games on their phones.

Evo has a front facing cam which people like a LOT for video calling on the go.

The Droid X has a great network and awesome video recording quality.

Just depends on what matters most to you =)

      • http://Website Elitebattlefield

I agree as well on all accounts. But as I mentioned before and in playing games on both. The Vibrant out performs the EVO. It’s noticeable visually (obviously) and gameflow.

I love Android for what it is….OPEN. I say if someone is gonna nag about something do something useful and find a creative way to contribute to change.

And I have an EVO so that we’re all clear. Even after knowing about the Vibrant I left T-Mobile. The EVO just flat put appealed to me more.

  • http://Website tracksforhire

haha my Samsung Vibrant smokes that droid and Evo

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

      Gaming, yes.

But what happens when you want to make video calls or Skype with loved ones in other countries WHILE on the go??

Every phone has their strengths and weaknesses =)

      • http://Website Elitebattlefield

Very True. If I really want to game I fire up my Quad Core, 16 gb ram, Nvidia gaming machine produced by Alienware. That’s gaming at it’s best sonny. I think the direction these devices are headed is in other rich media not just gaming. I’m willing to bet when Samsung thought about the Super Amoled display, they didn’t say, ” oh let’s see how good duke nukem will look”. I bet they were more concerned with how movies like Transformers, Avatar, etc were going to look. And Samsung putting in the 2nd generation hardware WAS NOT driven by how gaming would perform. Thier decision was purely based on sales and being the first to have it in the states. (EVO front facing camera)

People it’s a just a cell phone. Tell you what I know I will some day. But I’ll be happy to eat my words when devices come with dual-core 1 ghz processors, 2 gb of ram, and in intergrated video card. AND the device sales based on an installed pc game type.

  • http://Website rekrapmnwahs

amusing and quirky as always. i appreciate that you don’t go over all the specs, because you figure (rightfully) that anyone watching knows the details, and wants some hands-on, perspective and opinion. keep em coming.

only thing keeping me from the vibrant is lack of flash on camera. gahhh.

Everyone has their opinion. I actually think the prefer the looks of the Droid X which I find sexy and even other worldly. =p

But I do agree Sense is a WHOLE lot prettier than Motoblur. =)

Chris u know u cool with me! But your friend phone the droid x is a ugly ass droid! I mean if I would see someone holding that phone I would think they were a fucking terrorist. Anyway I know u got the evo but a 30fps cap fucking suck and my sexy ass vibrant have no flash and no front facing camera. My point is that there aren’t no perfect phones out there. But damn my vibrant is a sexy bitch! Aight chris keep doing you thing..catch u on twitter.

Yeah, people can’t grasp the fact that I love the Evo, Droid X, Galaxy S, and N1. Most of all… ANDROID!

They think you can only love ONE phone. LOL They’re all good to me. Just matters what your preference and/or carrier is. =)

  • http://DroidEmpire.com Rory

Chris! Awesome review, loved the video. The cuts were priceless and it was funny to watch, as well as educational :D

Don’t worry about the haters, they will post their opinions whether they liked your video or now. Haters gonna hate!

    Why can’t they make a high-end phone with a huge ass screen AND a qwerty? :( G1 for life I guess….

no because the samsung epic is coming out hopefully very soon.

I know how you feel man. Hopefully the HTC Vision and HTC Emerald end up living up to all the rumors.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Don’t worry QWERTY lovers! There’s a handful of great qwerty’s coming out soon! Just hang in there! CM6 will take some of the sting out of sticking with the G1 til then….

  • http://Website Crunkcory

Nice video man. Interesting to see what the Droid X has to offer. Im long the red eye live wallpaper. I wonder if there’s a way to get it for my Myt3g.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

That was the point of the video. To show off the Droid X and talk about what I liked and didn’t like. Don’t know why people got so butthurt… LOL

That Live Wallpaper is sick, huh! I think someone can port it to the G1/Mytouch seeing how its not too CPU intensive….

Also, motoblur is ugly and its an abomination that should be killed like mothers who abort their fetuses. Although that may have been a bit to graphic. . .haha jk.

Bottom Line. Verizon = too spoiled with android, needs to share it with everyone else lol, and motoblur is ugly.

awesome review to be quite frank! and i don’t get some of the people here, they don’t want a phone to be compared to another phone?! how in God’s name can you tell if the phone is good or not if you don’t compare (pro’s and con’s)?!? sigh.. to true chris, haters gonna hate! hehe. keep up to good work bro!

ow and btw the gsm verison of the Galaxy S has a front-facing camera, but still no flash :( but I, personally, can live with that :) each to their own.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I know! I don’t know why they removed the camera in the US! I’m sure US carriers had something to do with it…. Oh wells. The Epic 4G will solve that! Still wont be GSM though =/

      • http://Website asd

There won’t be a gsm version of Epic?? yeh that does suck :( but atleast we get to enjoy the samsung galaxy S :) I’ll stay hopeful that one day they would release a phone similar to the epic :) when that day happens, I would trade my Galaxy S in a heartbeat!

Guys i read one or 2 comments in here and couldnt read anymore. Chris does these reviews because hes all about android whether he makes a few mistakes about the phones or not. Im sure if he could stamp on an iPhone infront of Steve Jobs he would.

The Droid X hasn’t lived up to my expectations speed wise but Chris explained to me thats to do with the modded UI which i agree with. That notifications bar is really nice :p

That said cut him some slack and i for one will say, Chris you make me laugh with all of your videos way back with the G1. Keep it up.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

      Haha! Thanks! =p

  • http://Website kdub

I don’t understand why everyone is bashing these android phones! They are both great device’s. Shit I still love my original moto Droid. Save the bashing for the iPhone :) android in general is still the best.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I know! The Droid was actually a pretty cool phone too! I mean, it is one of the few phones that actually has STOCK Android UI. I give them props for that =)

  • http://Website Ryan

    Chris-

I love how you come here to defend yourself! :) You always make great points, but knowing how uninformed society is regarding things like Android, I’m glad you stick around to set people straight. It’s for their own good!

Anyways, thanks for the mini-review! I’m a Vibrant owner, but I love Motorola’s work. Plus, the better Android does at competing with one another means that they’re just outdoing Apple day after day and proving that the market of open development is always the best for consumers.

    Thanks again!

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yeah, people were all mixed up and I HAD to set them straight! LOL

The way people treat their phones nowadays its like joining a gang and you have to hate all the rivals. Ridiculous.

I wish more people had an open mind like you. Thanks for the comment =)

    Great Video Chris!!!!

Dont even worry about these guys coming in here catching feelings. Its all your opinion and your videos are classic. Android Rocks…..

And there is no PERFECT phone, so all you guys catching feelings because you are having buyers remorse because your phone turned out to be not what you were expecting, too bad!!! You have 30 days to return it. Both the X and Evo are great phones, so depends on which carrier you have. If you got sprint, the EVO is the hottness especially with CM6 out in beta, and soon to be official, FROYO for everyone. And if you are on verizon cop the X or wait for droid 2, you should be satisfied with either. As far as which is best?? Go scroll the forums and you will see that there are no short of complaints about both from owners so to each his own.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Great point and thank you =)

Played with my friends Droid X and do agree choppy and the UI icons look cartooney. Can’t wait til ‘ we get root then I’m in!

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yeah, if you can get stock Android UI on that thing it will be REALLY cool. I’d be jealous. Not gonna lie.. LOL

I’m sure one day, they’ll even make a Sense ROM for the X. BLASPHEMY! But cool. =)

  • http://Website jckrayzie7

Nice video review man. And don’t listen to what others people said, maybe they think they know a lot about stuff like this but they don’t they just hatters.

    DRAGO!!! X *awkward hand gestures*

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

      RAWRRRR!!!

  • http://Website Um

Of course u were gonna say the Evo is better, this coming from a guy who said a G1 was better than the original DROID!! I do agree that some of the app icons are a bit to cartoonish but the overall performance of the X is leaps and bounds better than the Evo, Sense just lags the Evo down way too much.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

The Evo is better in 2 areas. Front facing camera and Sense UI.

The Droid is better in 2 areas. GPU and video recording quality.

All that matters is what you like. And what do you think your average consumer will choose?

And I have NEVER ONCE said the G1 was better than the Droid. I actually liked the Droid. In my video (waaaaay back in the day) I said the Droid wasn’t a huge LEAP over the G1 as I thought it would be. I was disappointed. Now the Nexus One, that was the leap I was looking for. =)

      • http://Website Um

I could have sworn I saw a video you did when Droid first came and and did a comparo maybe I was mistaken. The only thing I like about the Evo is the way Sense looks but it seems to bog the phone down quite a bit a lot more so than this version of MotoBlur. For me the front facing camera had a lot to be desired on video calls it seemed to lag a bit, it could have been the network though, since it wasnt 4g.

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I made video calls all the time in the mall, or eating out. People were always amazed!
Lag would definitely rely on the data speeds in your area…

    • http://Website Elitebattlefield

You know you can turn the Sense UI off right? And yes there is a slight improvement in speed. But marginal.

      • http://Website Um

Yes I knew that, just like you can “turn off” MotoBlur on the X since there is actually no Blur service running on the background, its basically just a bunch of apps and widgets on the X unlike the Devour or other Blur phones.

        • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

You can’t “turn off” Sense. You can only use another Launcher. Sense is everywhere in the phone, not just the Launcher. (Common mistake)

And the Motoblur on the Droid X isn’t as prevalent as say in the Devour or Cliq but they still chose to replace a lot of the stock Android apps which I don’t really care for. Made the phone’s UI look cheap. Especially with as much as I loved the Droid X’s build quality, I just wish it had the software to match. =/

      • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

You can never “turn off Sense.” That’s just the Launcher. Sense is more than just the Homescreen. Its everywhere in the UI.

  • ER

Hopefully it’s not an evo killer. All androids can live happily together.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Agreed. No Androids should be killing eachother. LOL We should all be living in harmony =)

  • http://www.twitter.com/sayjay09 sayjay09

What do you guys think of the fact the droid x is having screen issues and some issues with deleting things?

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

I’ve been seeing a lot on that. I’m sure its a small percentage but still.. That sucks.

Doesn’t surprise me. When a phone is as popular as the Droid X, Evo, etc. there’s always a few with hardware problems. Its just simple math. LOL

      • http://www.twitter.com/sayjay09 sayjay09

Lol, you would have thought it could have been picked up in testing though? what could the users be doing so different day to day from the testers. I guess there asking themselves that too haha.

  • http://Website ray

I agree with you chris and mexican last names ftw! Ha if your not sorry but mine is garcia so ya, anyways well its like you said in a comment, it depends whats important to you, i dont want an evo because i use my phone as a camera and in not so nice words the evo’s camera quality sucks, but like you said its about whats important to YOU! And i use my phones as mp3 players so music quality is VERY important to me and every htc phone ive tried didnt sound so good, but i havent tried the evo so it might be great, but the droid x has a built in equalizer not that that matters with the newest version of mixzing which ill probably use, and the front facing camera for me is not that important yet, seeing as how there are not enough phones out there that have the feature, i dont mind waiting for the next killer vzw phone to have it because by then im sure more phones will have the feature, i just dont think id use it often because every group of friends i have arent phone nerds and probably wont upgrade to a superphone anytime soon so no front cam conversations. Although if verizon had the epic i would get it in a heartbeat because it never hurts to have a real qwerty, but until then this is the phone for me. Best buy screwed me on launch day, they pulled up my info the day i pre ordered and didnt tell me i wouldnt be able to upgrade 15 days early through their system, so it was a wasted tank of gas so i had to go the next day and order it at verizon after they were sold out and now i have to wait a week, the reason why i was so mad is because it was a long drive to that best buy because my local best buy doesnt carry verizon(corpus christi) so i had to go to a town an hour away to pre order then go back and attempt to buy it, so the day i went to pickup was a waste of a tank of gas and seeing how i had to shell out $300 at verizon and the whole tank of gas i was so mad, the kicker is is that i went to the verizon launch party to buy accessories and check out the phone and i didnt buy one because i thought i was gonna go get it at the best buy i had pre ordered, so i had a chance and ended up now having to wait a week till i get mine, im still very very mad, but good review chris keep em coming you have a cool video personality which is rare with phone geeks, good job!!!!! Ps im sure the next big moto phone with gingerbread at launch will have a ffc and im sure it will be crazy like the rumored galaxy s 2 phones said to be coming next year, and im just waiting for dolby mobile to be on all of these android phones, i kinda feel like android neglects music

    • http://Website ray

By camera i meant more camcorder than camera, but the camera is better too, but still to each is own, thats why we love android isnt it? This is my first android phone because ive been waiting for an android phone that had exactly what i wanted, great camcorder and easy to type on, i wasnt going to spend a lot of money on phones i really didnt want(dinc and droid, droid had bad music quality and i didnt like the dinc typing experience, weird i know) i was able to withstand the storm for 2 years waiting(i know when i get the DX im gonna need to have someone wrap me in a towel and tell me its finally over like i was just rescued from a very traumatic experience ha), as a new member of the android community cant we just say hey cool feature on you android phone look at mine it does this, i know its cool but wow yours had cool features too, then move on and bash apple, rim, nokia, and poor little palm haha, android is alive and killing! So happy to make the jump!

      • http://Website ray

how many explanations can one person make, lets see cuz im going for the record this morning haha, by waiting for a phone i meant on verizon, done

  • http://Itain'tnoSprintEVOkillerifcan'tRootIt! Angel

I would maybe of considered it IF you had the ability to root it, but since Verizon wants to lock phones, then I say the EVO is better. The HTC EVO is similarly spec’d plus you can ROOT it and run what ever you want on it. So EVO killer, I THINK NOT!

    • http://Website Elitebattlefield

      Angel,

Remember what Steve Jobs said about his precious little iPhone being unbreakable. Well the iPhone now runs Android. The Droid WILL BE BROKEN too. And once it does Droid owners will all rejoice in celebration.

    • http://www.youtube.com/emogamer Christopher Chavez

Yeah, I don’t think its an Evo killer at all. If you’re into hacking and modding, the Evo is much more versatile (at the moment). I’m sure one day the Droid X will be rooted, but that’s a lot of ifs.

Right now I have stock Android 2.2 on my Evo and its never been faster! Video coming soon. =D

  • Rizzle

TLDR, Droid X and Galaxy S are both nice so shut up already. This phone does kill the stock Evo in its current state.

Some people here fail at life. All 4 phones are quite nice, the evo is getting software raped it seems like so hopefully that gets fixed for the main stream users.

The hummingbird isn’t the end all some of you want to claim it is. Galaxy S has a wicked nice screen and is very good at 3d apps with the gpu but doesn’t hold up as well at some other tests.

I’m upgrading my G1 to a Droid X. The first reason is the Droid X has more basic neat hardware (LED Flash, noise canceling microphones, ect) but the biggest reason was just that I can order it NOW while the Vibrant will be released “someday”. I have a G1 I’m tired of waiting.

    # Mathdroid below, YMMV

Linpack Benchmarks (peak only), (higher is better)
    Evo 4g – 6.49
    Droid X -8.19
    Nexus 1 – 40.09
    Galaxy S (Captivate) – 8.34

NOTE: Mostly meaningless test, 2.2 will see all the phones high enough that the variance is meaningless.

    Quadrant Benchmarks (higher is better)
    Evo 4g – 419
    Droid X -1131
    Nexus 1 – 1304
    Galaxy S (Asia) – 827

NOTE1 : Internet claims for the Evo people report hitting scores closer to 550, and on rooted 2.2 claims go as high as 1275 that I have seen. These are internet claims YMMV.

NOTE2 : This is the most well rounded and overall performance test in my opinion.

    NeoCore (higher is better)
    Evo 4g – 25.2
    Droid X – 42.9
    Nexus 1 – 28.3
    Galaxy S (Captivate) – 55.1

Thanks for the info. I’m not a techy person so I need a real review not a bunch of specs and numbers thrown at me. More importantly, I look for a review by someone who has actually put it in their hands and physically tried it out. I just need to know if this phone is going to do what I want it to do and how fast compared to the phone I already have. Thanks again.
