Sprint begins Android 2.2 rollout for the HTC EVO 4G

Android 2.2 for the HTC EVO 4G has officially landed!  Don’t worry, there’s no six step process to manually download and install the update.  Just go into your phones settings (menu > settings > system updates > firmware update) to see if it’s your turn to download the update.

Sprint and HTC will be staggering the downloaded so that their servers are not overwhelmed all at once.   But if you’re not willing to wait a few days to get a taste of Froyo, try changing the date on your EVO.  We bumped out handset’s date up by two weeks and immediately received a notification that a firmware update was available to download.  The 84.4MB update took nearly an hour to download and roughly 10 minutes to install.

So how did the install process go for you? What’s your favorite new Froyo feature on the EVO 4G?

New features with Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G

  • Android Market Improvements (update all, move apps to SD)
  • Updated FM radio with new widget
  • Flashlight app
  • LED light support for video recording
  • Google News and Weather application/widgets
  • Adobe Flash 10.1
  • App Sharing

I’ve heard that you need to uninstall LED Light. If you have it installed. Hope this helps

It was horrendous on an already frustrating time I am having with the Evo 4G as of the last 2 weeks. The phone has begun doing random restarts under heavy data sessions. Its as if the phone cant handle data intesive tasks. Updated to 2.2 hoping it would stop, but no luck….for 10mins straight the phone kept doing restarts and would not let me get to the homescreen. This is a case that is going on with many Evo owners….And now Im officially pissed…..Btw i have done soft resets and hard resets, and no luck…..Its done occasional resets, and then gone on a farting spree and done back to back resets…….I even went as far and ROM’d back to stock to do the 2.2 update, and it does this?

    • http://Website DROID Sam

Sounds liek you may have a defective unit. I’d take it into a Sprint store and have them give you a new phone. Sprint it really good about replaceing/fixing phone for their customers. I actually had a friend who was having issues with his Hero. Since they couldn’t fix the problem they just gave him the EVO instead.

    • Prince77

Well you probably shouldn’t have rooted your phone. I am not knocking you in anyway, but you should have waited unless you had it that way before. You more than likely did something wrong.

    • http://Website mclain1

Yeah dude… I think you did something wrong. I did have a few issues with my phone restarting but that was caused by a app i downloaded that wasn’t compatible with the EVO. I did a hard reset and restored back to default (cleared memory/cache and everything)… My phone is great now. No issues what so ever. Froyo rocks!

    • http://Website Tony

Same here. Just getting a new EVO. I HAD TO

  • Prince77

Bumping the date up did work. I will update later on, I am excited about this.

    • http://Website Ripoon

I can’t seem to get this date pumping thing to work for the Incredible Froyo update. Any suggestions?

  • http://Website Android Fan

Wow, the date trick is great. As soon as I switched the date, I got the message to downlaod the update. Froyo is nothing earth shattering. I know it’s supposed to be faster, but have not really noticed any speed improvements yet (never has any speed issue before).

I’d say the LEd flashlight apps is pretty cool and I love the App Sharing app. I’ve used it a half dozen times already today.

  • http://Website Matthew

how would you do this official update if you’ve already done the unofficial update?
i just did the official yesterday, i should’ve waited one more day for the official but i couldnt take the wait. im very impatient when it comes to new things for my phone. haha

    • http://Website DROID Sam

HTC tweeted the other day that they are working on a fix to get those who loaded the unofficial release back on track.

  • http://Website Axel

Moving the date up to get the 2.2 update notification worked. I uninstalled the LED Light app while dwnloading 2.2 hoping I won’t run into the “camera not working” issue. I’ll report back later with any issues I encounter with the update, if any. Thanks guys.

mm hm I’m loving it! I didn’t think my screen rotated 3 ways before either am I wrong? Battery life is better on froyo too. I’m running live wallpapers in all my glory!

Other unlisted goodies in the Evo update:

    - Stock HTC keyboard is now MULTITOUCH!
    - H264 video support (although only for 480×800 resolution, not 720p)

    • http://Website Josh

do you mean in settings the 720p setting is gone? Im one of the ones that did the unofficial update, when I go to the video camera options and its says
      720P(1280 x 720)
      WVGA(800 x 480)
      VGA(640 x 480)
      CIF(352 x 288)
      QVGA(320×240

Never mind…….When you change the encoding to H264 its only 800 x 480……

From the home screen, go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications. The default tab will be your downloaded apps. Tap on the app you want to move, and you’ll see a “Move to SD card” button in the “Storage” section.

Not every app can be moved to the SD card. If it can’t be moved, the button will be grayed out.

Keep in mind this will only be temporary as Developers will hopefully start to trigger their app to be moved to the sd card. I know it’s a bummer.

Got the update yesterday via HTC software updates. No up the date either. Took about 10-15 minutes for download and install. I have noticed that its faster. Love the LED’s on camcorder and the file attachment feature on texts. I have been recording voice messages and sending them as MMS texts all day. if that was on 2.1 i didn’t notice it. but so far everything works great.
