Twitter for Android updated to 1.04 bringing some UI tweaks

It seems the Twitter for Android application has gotten an update to version 1.04 in the Android market. Nothing official from the Twitter folks about exactly what’s included in the updated application, but I’ll try to walk through what I notice in the first few passes at the update.

Most noticeably, the bird and cloud animation on the main screen is gone, replaced by two new menu selection buttons: you can now view trends and search Twitter right from the main screen. Still on the main screen, the icons look like they’ve been re-done to make them neater and a bit crisper.

These UI changes on the main screen seem to be the only true changes to the application, but I’m sure there are also some bugfixes and behind the scenes enhancements built into there as well. Hopefully soon we will have official word from the Twitter team.  We will, of course, keep you posted as soon as we learn more.  For now, enjoy the screenshot of the changes below.

Otherwise, head on over to the market and update your official Twitter client!

Anthony loves all things technology, from hardware to apps and games. You can connect with him via Google+ or Twitter by clicking one of the fancy doo-dads above.

It’s very interesting that they’re releasing the update today. Because yesterday, I just decided I’ve had enough of the official app and downloaded Tweetcaster. I find Tweetcaster much nicer and better in features to use.

Unless Twitter is making some major changes to its official app (including all these other 3rd party app goodness), I’ll continue to go for 3rd party.

This much time having ignored requested fixes, including the simple ones (keeping an unread tweet count, but no auto-scroll to the first unread? that’s just dumb). I’ve since moved on as well, with Touiteur being my current Twitter client of choice for Android.

Dang! I was really wanting to see the source code for that cloud background, but then they yank it out before releasing the source :(
Speaking of which where is this promised source code it has been a loooong time since they said they plan to release it. How about some investigative journalism on my behalf?

I use the TweetDeck beta has as main twitter app after the second update. Twitter is my backup app. I have to check out the new UI and see if they did any more improvements.

Why all twitter applications don’t have option to be moved to sd card? Dont get it…

Application that are scheduled to run in certain time intervals (such as status updates, tweets…) are not suitable for movin to a SD card. Mounting the SD card (directy or through USB sync) to a PC would cancel the updates and the application would need to be restarted….

official twitter app wasn’t downloading all tweets. that makes it useless.

I uninstalled the update to 1.04 and reverted back to an older version. I greatly preferred the behavior of the old app as far as clicking on a user and going straight to their Tweets. In 1.04 it takes you to some profile information and from there you have to click on Tweets.

How exactly do you undo the update to go back a version?

I desperately miss the bird animation.
