SONY is finally launching the SONY Ericsson XPERIA X8, nearly four months after the handset was announced. As expected, the XPERIA X8 will ship with Android 1.6 and the same custom UI that’s on the XPERIA X10 Mini and Mini Pro. For those of you who have forgotten, the SONY Ericsson XPERIA X8 features a 600MHz processor, a 3 inch capacitive 320×480 (HVGA) display, 128 MB of memory on board, 1200mAh battery, 3.2 megapixel camera with fixed focus, 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, and Bluetooth connectivity.

It’s pretty obvious that SONY Ericsson isn’t aiming very high with the XPERIA X8. According to the SE Product blog, Android 2.1 should be hitting the X8 before the end of the year, but we’re not so sure we can trust that statement. Back in the summer, SE moved up their planned Android 2.1 rollout for the X10 line of phones from Q4 to Q3.  If you have not checked the date lately, we’re already 8 days into Q4 with no new updates for any of SONY Ericsson’s Android phones.

We know that development and testing takes time, but Android 2.1 has been available for over 10 months. If SONY Ericsson really wants to be one of the biggest players in the Android segments, something needs to change.
