There are many apps for discovering what’s hot on the Android Market, but the one I turn to most is AppAware. It has no where near the number of features of AppBrain (my other fav), but it does do one thing well that no one else offers – real-time stats.
For example, yesterday we posted about ThickButtons and instantly after the story went up I could watch in real-time as people downloaded and installed the app. As more people installed the app it climbed up the Top Applications list and then others using AppAware were able to discover it and grabbed it too. We also saw ThickButtons hit AppBrain’s Hot Apps page, but it took a full 24 hours before their system displayed it.
Not everyone visiting this site uses AppAware, but we can see that several hundred of you installed ThickButtons and gave it a try. Thanks to AppAware, we can also see that some people (67) uninstalled it and this is valuable information as well. AppAware tracks your phone model and shares it anonymously, so developers can see in real-time if their app might be a experiencing a problem with a certain device.
According to Androlib it looks like 100k people have downloaded AppAware, but I think it only has around 10k active users. As the community continues to grow, it will be an even more valuable source of information for those that use it.
AppAware recently updated to version 2.0 which includes a new UI and friends list so check it out again if it’s been a few months since you used it. This app isn’t for everyone, but if you want to have your finger on the pulse of the Android Market then this is a must have tool.
Please leave a comment if you have any feature requests for the team behind AppAware. These guys are working hard to improve the service and they value your feedback.
