Sprint and T-Mobile won’t be the only carriers with a “4G” network this holidays, as Verizon is also expected to roll-out 4G LTE to 38 markets by the end of the year. Verizon’s LTE netwok should offer the fastest real world performance with download speeds of 5-12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2-5 Mbps.

In addition to the 38 markets, Verizon 4G LTE will also be available in more than 60 airports for a combined coverage area of 110 million people this year. Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdams recently said that they plan to double that coverage area in 2012 (200 million POPs) and cover their entire existing 3G footprint with 4G LTE by the end of 2013 (285 million POPs).

This holiday season Verizon will offer two USB modems that will support 4G LTE, including the LG VL600 and Pantech UML290. Smartphones that support 4G LTE are not expected to go on sale till next summer, but we expect Verizon will announce a half-dozen devices at the upcoming CES event on January 5th.
