Are you ready for 3D video calling?

Remember those glasses-free 3D phones from Sharp last week? We were a little excited about the 3D display and totally missed another unique feature – Sharp also included their new mobile 3D camera in both models. This means that Sharp’s Android phones can both capture and display 3D images without the use of special glasses.

The 3D camera is positioned on the back of the phone, but how long will it take before someone puts one on the front? It sounds a little futuristic, but it is not out of the question that your next Android phone or tablet might be able to make 3D video calls.

I guess the real question should be – Do we really want 3D video calls?

I still don’t do Skype with anyone but my wife and kids. Not into video calling, really not looking forward to it being standard; even less excited about 3d video calling!

3D in the UI/system would look pretty gimmicky but I can def’ get behind 3D video calling. It just seems right. Through in some gaming uses and other 3D applications (Earth, Navigation, Augmented Reality, etc.)

How would you take a 3d picture like at 0:39 sec? Or does it detect distance and make up what pixels would be behind it?

To take the 3D pictures, you have to snap a shot, then move the camera and the software fills in the details. It’s then processed and you get your 3D picture. I’m pretty sure the camera is just a regular camera. I’ve not seen anything about 3D video calls. Did I miss something?
