Verizon Thunderbolt 4G is not your dream phone, it’s the one after that

Last week we saw HTC teasing a new 4G phone and now all signs point to it being the Thunderbolt 4G, which should be announced by Verizon on January 6th at CES. We had been calling this phone the Incredible HD or Mecha, but the Thunderbolt name first appeared last week on Droid Life. Now there have been new HTC ads popping up which say “It’s not your dream phone. It’s the one after that”, which Phil from Android Central points out that they link to htc.com/4G?extcid=Thunderbolt-4G-Disp.

The Thunderbolt 4G teaser.

Select members of the press (not us) also started receiving a teaser box from HTC last week that was filled with clues. The package included an Android figure, compass (hint: HTC maps), four “G” buttons attached to the keychain (hint: Verizon 4G), foam TV set (hint: V Cast video), “Froyo Lover” sticker (Android 2.2), and a video chat screen shot showing Las Vegas (hint: front-facing camera and unveiling at CES).

Based on previous leaks, we think the Thunderbolt 4G will be Verizon’s version of the Desire HD (or myTouch 4G in the U.S.). That means we should expect a 4.3 inch display, 1 GHz second-generation Snapdragon CPU, 8 megapixel camera with 720p video capture, 768 MB RAM, and support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

Verizon will have a half-dozen LTE devices at CES next week, so it will be interesting to see how they stack up. We are expecting new 4G phones from HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and maybe a few surprises.

Which handset maker do you think will have the best Android phone at CES?

Clues from HTC about their next big phone.

I think the shell for the MyTouch 3G is a bit different, you’ll be able to tell the difference for sure. Internally, though, you’re right. Much of the same.

4.3 is too big for me im happy with my mt4g

    • http://upanddowns.tumblr.com Jason

i agree. I had the EVO for a month and now ive had the mt4g. The EVO was just too big for me (as far as texting etc)

also the battery life on my mytouch has been stellar. Plus the camera is much better than the EVO

Hit the enter key a bit too early… but I was going to say:

This + CM7 = I can live without a dual core for another year until they bring em down to 28nm.

  • http://Website Splendor

Nice try, HTC, but a single core processor and froyo are not specs from my dream phone (or the next one). They are specs from my current phone.

    • http://Website AceoStar

I hope this is the highest rated comment ever, I loved seeing it on the main page. Maybe HTC will get the point? :/

      • http://Website Splendor

Thanks! I was shocked to see how many +’s this comment got. I should mention that I think that this phone looks awesome. I just find the “dream phone” marketing laughable given the leaked specs.

  • http://Website Keola

So what’s the difference between first and second generation snapdragon?

    • mattcoz

Smaller manufacturing process and much faster GPU.

  • http://Website Steve Morrison

    Fat.
    They should´ve called it

    Verizon “Roseanne” 4G

  • http://Website Chris

Haha, funny. I don’t think they should advertise FroYo as a positive.

    • http://Hoosiercub.tumblr.com Tony

Considering most of their competition is still on 2.1 or lower, Sony Ericsson, Samsung. I don’t see a problem with it, i think theyre more touting that it has 2.2 than anything. It also has new sense, which will be unique to this phone on htc phones in the US. I bet it gets gingerbread legit before the incredible, droid x/2/pro, galaxy s phones too.

Minus the screen size, aren’t those the same specs as the mytouch4g?

  • http://Website Ichigo

Yeah they are the same specs as the mytouch 4g. The MT4G is the best android phone out right now.

    • http://Website Vvv

Obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. The best phone is a nexus s, google owns android and thus it would make its own phone the best. P.s a galaxy has the same internals as the nexus s, this making both of them the fastest (cpu and gpu combined). Add in the best super amoled screen and that is why they are the best on the market, no other phone can claim 90 million triangles, the same as a ps2. Saying the evo is the best is a joke, and that makes you an un informed joker

    • mattcoz

The Evo gets absolutely smoked by the MT4G and Galaxy in 3D game performance.

  • http://Website Daniel

Anyone have an idea of when maybe the incredible HD will be released? O.o Im being forced to change phones really soon which i may end up with the incredible but if the new phones are coming out really soon then I could probably convince my family to hold off alittle longer.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

This is the “Incredible HD”. I expect it will hit stores in late January or February.

  • http://Website swazedahustla

Nope….my evo is still the ish ….new phones coming out should be far ahead of my phone not on par…..next!

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

The EVO is awesome, but the GPU is not fast enough to run the latest 3D games (see Dungeon Hunter).

      • http://Website Richard

The GPU on the evo is fine to run any 3d game the mytouch 4g or any other device is runing right now…don’t sleep on the evo it is the best multimedia device on the market and the first 4g device ever…my money is on the evo which is even better than this samsung Nexus S…espically when gingerbread comes to the Evo

        • http://Website clvr

Why make false claims? The evo is the best multimedia? I’the fastest gaming processor belongs to the galaxy s and nexus s, the power vr540 is the fastest and most idyll gpu on the market, just being a 1gz phone means nothing now. just check out all the different benchmarks, it even does worse then a 2 year old nexus 1.

          • http://Website ncb1397

lol, the Nexux 1 is 1 year old.

      • http://Website swazedahustla

I’ll take your word for that (3D gaming) as I don’t shop for cell phones with the intent to game, thats what my xbox360 and 60 inch flat screen were made for. Aside from that though, the EVO is still as capable as any phone out, and coming out aside from maybe that optimus 2x. But we still dont know much about that one.

        • http://Website Mtsunami31

          Well said..

Mytouch 4g is not the best phone piss poor call quality. Evo is still the king

I think Motorola will have the best hardware; HTC will have the best user interface; samsung will have the best screen; LG will be the wild card

    • http://Website angermeans

You can’t say Moto has the best hardware when they lock the bootloader not to mention the horrible software. I will take HTC over anything Moto anyday

      • http://Hoosiercub.tumblr.com Tony

What does the locked boot loader have to do with hardware…?

      • Cyberdan3

You must not have read where they said Motorola has the best HARDWARE. Bootloader and software are both software and therefore your point makes no sense.

    • http://www.andrudes.com Andrude

ANDROID has the best interface. Everything else is merely permanent bloat that causes you to be at the bottom of the upgrade food-chain. IMHO.

    • http://Website Richard

YOUR WAY OFF BASE….HTC HAS AND WILL FOREVER BE THE BEST MAKERS OF LONG LASTING SMARTPHONES…..NO OTHER COMPARES

  • Cyberdan3

This better be the worst phone that gets announced at CES. I am expecting to see AMAZING phones and this is NOT it. I need to find a reason to get out of my AT&T (iphone) contract.

    • http://Website Richard

Any device on android through any carrier is better than your iphone there are plenty to choose don’t be afraid handle your business and make a choice

      • Cyberdan3

I know that is true for the most part. I just don’t want to be locked into a 2 year contract with a mediocre phone when so many more phones will be announced that will supposedly blow the pants off current ones.

  • http://Website UniqueNate

Yea, this phone would of been hot much earlier in the year. I don’t see why they didn’t just make their 4G phone a dual core 4G phone. It’s honestly no different then the 4G phones out now. It’s no different then the Evo, besides the 2nd gen Snapdragon Processor. I want to actually see something it can do that other phones can’t do at all. Perform at a level that no phone is at now. 4G alone is not all of that. Yea, fast data speeds are cool, but Tegra 2 will put the performance on another level alone and I will take that.

    • http://Website ncb1397

Verizon LTE is the fastest 4G network in the United States. The frequency Verizon LTE is on has much better building penetration than Clear based WiMax.

The more the screen becomes larger, I notice worse battery life. I imagine my phone spec will pass my laptop’s in a year or two, but the real problem is:
    WE NEED BETTER BATTERIES!!!!

    • http://Website Raptor

I do not get the logic.
The larger screen -> the larger phone -> the larger battery == same battery life

  • http://Website Raptor

No this is not a phone for those who already has 2010 models.

Next phone for me who has this year phones must have
    - dual core CPU
    - 1280×800 SuperAMOLED screen
    - 4.5″ (even current Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant can have 4.5″ without ABSOLUTELY any other modifications, too much useless bezel)
    - 600 nits max brightness instead of current 350
    - 4G (HSPA+ LTE or WiMax)
    - HDMI output
    - fast camera with HDR modes
    - separate buttons for camera and video

  • http://Website Raptor

    - 1 GB RAM
    - Faster and larger flash 32-64 GB
    - USB3

  • http://Website todah09

Dungeon hunter, runs fine on my evo

  • Scotter

Beautiful phone (I love HTC’s hardware design sense).

Except for it having 4G, I would not call it a next gen phone. I’m guessing Snapdragon 2 is still single core. I would definitely buy this phone before I would buy a Nexus S, though!

  • http://Website Bill Nye

I hope HTC is working on some amazing things behind the scenes because we haven’t heard anything exciting about them in ages. This time last year it was all about the rumored N1 and Supersonic, but now they’re being outdone by Motorola, Samsung, and even LG…

  • http://Website rick

The one after my dreamphone has a 1080p screen, dual core CPU + GPU and is powered with a completely hardware accelerated Honeycomb :)

    • http://Website Alex

Basically your dream phone is iPhone 5. Except replace Honeycomb with AX (can’t say A4 since we don’t know what 5th will have). You can actually get almost all of that with iPhone 4. Except it doesn’t need dual-core CPU to be hella fast and not laggy, or to run real 3D games like Rage or Infinity Blade

  • http://Website mike

Mytouch4g the best android out that is something only a tmobile customer would say because anyone who has a real clue would know that the droid x and Verizon are a match made in heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Davids mom

Droid X is the best phone is something only a verizon customer would say
      -Ugly design
      -slower CPU
      -less ram
      -motoblur
      -no 4G

  • http://Website cb2000a

Moto….no question at all. Their T2 phone will rock!

  • http://Website robert

I would rather stick with my Droid x and unkimeted 3g then get into the hype for a 4g phone that u have to pay out the nose to have. Give us a unlimted 4g plan

  • http://Website droidz

Fail HTC. This isn’t exactly the phone of my dreams and most certainly a far cry from the dream phone after that. Reality is that it WAS my dream phone right around October of 2009. Nice try though.

Looks like I’ll be sticking with my BB 9650 till I find something worth leaving it for because this tablet of a phone isn’t it. The HP palm 3 specs actually look pretty impressive!
