HD multimedia dock for Motorola Atrix 4G could retail for around $59

The Atrix 4G is not your normal Android phone. It is a mobile computer that can transform into a laptop, desktop, set-top box, and a phone. We previously learned that the laptop dock might debut around $150 and today we discovered that the HD multimedia dock could sell for less than half that price.

A place-holder page on the wireless superstore Fommy.com has the HD dock currently listed for $59.95, which sounds like a reasonable price when you consider what the accessory can do. The HD dock includes three USB ports to hook up a keyboard, mouse, plus external storage and it also sports a micro HDMI port for full HD playback. Motorola also threw in a wireless remote control to control the media center app.

When the Atrix is placed in the HD dock it can launch Motorola’s webtop application for a full desktop experience or their entertainment center app. Each dock remembers which mode you originally set it up for, so you could purchase multiple docks and have your Atrix automatically know where you are and what you need.

If you don’t want all the extra bells and whistles, it looks like Motorola will also offer a standard dock as Fommy has one listed for $49.

We still don’t have an official launch date, but the Atrix 4G will be in stores by the end of February. It’s a good thing this phone might sell for $149 on new 2-year contract, because I’ll need to save my money to purchase all its accessories.

Features of the HD multimedia dock include:

  • Intelligent IC chip inside recognizes a full battery
  • Automatically switches to a saver mode to prevent overcharging and short circuit
  • Phone can still be used during charging
  • Compact, lightweight and stylish
  • The desktop charger allows docking and charging
  • It also allows you to connect to a PC or laptop for USB charging and data synchronization all from this compact little station
  • Listen to music, see photos or watch HD videos using a standard HDMI cable (sold separately)
  • In desktop-only mode, listen to your music or use as a digital picture frame while charging your Motorola ATRIX 4G

Look for the HD Multimedia Dock to debut around $59.

Getting the car dock for sure! I use google navigation all the time.

Where’s the in depth review of the 2X?

    • http://Website Taylor

I’ve only had the phone one full day….

Out playing with the camera now.

  • http://Website UniqueNate

Oh and I hope it’s an in-depth review. Not to many other sites go in-depth anymore. They just scroll through the homescreens and run a benchmark and call it a day. I want to see the apps inside and out, performance, little tweaks, & then the lame benchmarks. I honestly don’t care for those. The true performance runs in a daily use of a phone. I’ve seen phones with high scores and still be choppy in some areas.

Utilizing external storage has me all excited. Can’t wait to stick just a card reader in there and have access to all my pics from a day of shooting.

These kinds of docks will be great in 2 years when we have advanced quad-core processors with a lot of more features, but I don’t think the dual-core processors are good enough to use to power a large laptop screen.

    • http://Website Michael

Hey mike just an fyi; processors dont power screens.

      • http://Website mike

I didn’t mean power as in electrical power.

If two phones have the same exact hardware but different screen sizes, the phone with the smaller screen will run a lot faster than the other one.

        • http://Website Eric

That is also not correct. If I have a 112″ 720p TV and a 22″ 1080p monitor, the 22″ will be harder to drive. It’s resolution, not screen size, and like in my other comment, the T2 is designed for much higher than laptop resolutions.

    • http://Website Eric

You don’t need to worry about that. The screen on the laptop is no higher res than the screen on the tablets with the same processor, and the T2 can support, iirc, 1920×1200 resolution without problem.

Man taylor you love this phone dont you

    • http://Website Dennis

Tell me about it. There’s always something bugging Taylor. First it was dual core, then Nexus and now Atrix.

When it comes to Moto vs. HTC this is the big thing that HTC does not tend to do. So HTC start to make some goddamn docks and mounts for your phones like Moto.

By on the Atrix, if AT&T still has the “unknown sources” removed and Moto’s locked bootloader no matter how cheap this dock or the “notebook” dock is this will not sell that well.

    • http://Website Eric

You really think that? You really think the average person buying phones is going to say “What? Locked bootloader? No way!” or “No unofficial sources? Heck no!”? Hahaha, the average person wouldn’t know that at all. Not that either are confirmed.

And HTC makes docks like Moto? Where is the HTC Laptop, or the HTC webtop? Would love to see it.

      • http://Website crossnine

Actually, I think he means that HTC needs to start making docks like the one Motos making, because apparently he likes HTC phones for the unlocked bootloader and that ATT is blocking the mentioned and loading crapware like its no tomorrow. IMO, I’d go to ATT for this unless it came to Verizon.

    • http://Website CrochOc

Look up AC_SWM. It’ll install unsigned sources for you.

It’s sad that moto has Xoom, otherwise having tablet dock for atrix would be super cool, just imagine, it would be just screen, speakers, front facing camera, some microphone and huge battery, I would even probably sacrifice the lack of honeycomb cause the big battery would give me something like 20+ hours of playtime and that would be more than awesome, it’s the same hardware anyway

Something that bothers me about the Atrix and the MM dock. So, I have some friends around, maybe even a date and we’re watching a movie. How does it deal with text/email messages? In fact, I even like to flick through my messages when a movie is on if I’m only hanging out with friends or watching something alone.

I have a pretty social life, my phone is always beeping or taking a work call or exchange email. I know it’s not the end of the world, but I am sort of totally cut off from my phone (like I said, I know it’s not the end of the world, I won’t have cold sweats or anything) if I’m using the MM dock.

    • http://Website James!

Yeah, this a concern of mine too. If you have to remove the phone from a dock to respond to a text or a call, it’ll probably interrupt whatever movie you were watching, or whatever you were doing on the webtop app. Kinda kills the mobility factor of a cell phone if you fasten it to a dock instead of having it ready at arm’s reach all the time.

      • http://Website Bob G

If you’re worried about taking a call while the phone is docked = bluetooth headset.
If you’re worried about not being able to text while watching a movie (this sounds really ridiculous and just plain ADD) = DLNA

        • http://Website TiberiusMonkey

Rubbish, and you’ve missed the point totally.

My phone beeps a LOT. I can receive a lot of exchange email as well as texts/gmail from both social contacts as well as very important work contacts everyday, including weekends.

The POINT is that anyone watching a movie at my house shouldn’t have to be interrupted every 10-20 mins be beeping and alerts, not only that but **they shouldn’t have an entire movie stopped and interrupted just because I have to take a work call or worse, leave the house**.

So again, this has nothing to do with a need to look at my phone, this has everything to do with beeps and calls interrupting movie playback.

The main reason I like the phone, is also the main reason for why I think I will no longer be getting one, although thank you Battleship below for an informative reply.

          • http://Website Bob G

so……..The Point is: You should just get something else to play your movies if you are oh so popular, then.

          • http://Website Andre

            Airplane Mode is your friend.

          • http://Website FNugget

And what would you have been doing before having this phone? Yes there will probably be limitations, but who said you HAVE to watch movies through the phone once you own one? What you’re getting here is options. Sweet, sweet options.

      • Battleship

This promo addresses most of your questions, but the short answer is No, you don’t have to remove the phone from the dock to reply to texts/e-mails and several videos shot at CES have reps saying bluetooth takes care of making and answering calls. While connected to the laptop dock, you have access to all the features of your phone.

The question is: do you want to deal with texts and calls where others can see what you’re writing and saying. If you don’t, then you’ll have to take the phone off the dock. Good thing the phone remembers what you were doing last, so you can pick things right back up when you dock it again.

    • chief113

Wow, I never even thought of that. That is a great, great point.

  • http://Website Mike

Why are you talking so much about just one phone and pretty much ignoring the rest of the phones?

You rarely talk about the LG Optimus 2X and the Droid Bonitic. Plus, you know how shitty AT&T has been with updating their phones.

Plus, with the Atrix, you won’t have Cyanogen support because Motorola encyrpts the bootloader. We know that the Atrix also has an encyrpted bootloader.

One thing is certain, you talking about Atrix so much as if its gold, is very good advertising for Motorola and AT&T.

    • http://Website Eric

      1. A look at the first three pages reveals the following. 5 Atrix Articles, 2 Nexus S articles, A nook article, an LG 2X article/Hands on, an Inspire 4G article, a XOOM article, a Galaxy S2 article, a Galaxy Tab2 article, a Bionic article, an Xperia play article, a Droid X2 article, an article on the new mini samsungs, an Xperia Arc article, a sidekick article, and 2 thunderbolt articles. How dare he not post those…

Sure, the Atrix has more, but it has 2 release date rumors (other phones have these), 2 dock articles (which the other phones can’t have), and a 1080p post launch update (other phones don’t have these either). That puts it at exactly 1 release rumor above most of these phones, and stores that the other phones have no comparison to. On top of that, every other android/tech blog I read has ran these stories as well. Give it a rest.

      2. What rumors has the Droid Bionic or the X2 had, besides the release of the bionic? Not too long ago, the X2 was almost the only thing talked about. It’s currently not generating news. Yes, he has one for review, but do you want him to only test it for a day? I don’t.

      3. None of that confirmed. Probably, but not confirmed. The internet needs to learn the difference between the two.

Why would you ever buy the dock without “all of the bells and whistles”?

Not saying that it’s not a good idea, but I would definitely shell out $10 more to have some of Moto’s cool features.

I’m rather excited, really, this phone is going to be amazing.

  • http://Website val580

I’ve already done “smartphone modding” on old symbian phones ( including getting virus from emule …) , spent hours on my nokia n900 and finally got a Desire which is a relieve : I don’t care about the bootloader or cyanogen mod , I don’t want to spend time anymore on modding phones !

  • http://Website Nate

why did they put a micro HDMI port on it? It definitely has the real estate to accomodate a full size HDMI.

  • http://Website David

I got a question for all you guys, that are really into phones: will the other phones get docks and laptops like the atrix?

    • http://Website Maximus

There have been phones with docks in the past however none with the sort of integration the Atrix provides

This sort of innovation will trickle to other mobile manufactures i suspect Manufactures such as HTC and Samsung will offer there own versions of the Multimedia docks

Me being a Proud Nexus S owner i accept the Nexus 3 to have various Docks provided by Google

All major High End Phones have front Facing cameras so u can expect the next batch of High- End phones to have docks

  • http://Website TedC

Frankly I think this is largely just a gimmick.
    1) No significant number of people are going to use their phone as a way of watching movies on a big screen.
    2) Right now Android isn’t a viable desktop replacement so using it as your computer doesn’t make sense. Even Honeycomb seems to be marginal for this. Chrome OS seems to be where Google is focusing their effort.

We’re still a couple of years out before most of this makes sense. I’m waiting for a “docking station” where I lay my phone down and it charges (wireless charging station) and it connects to my keyboard wirelessly (Bluetooth wireless connectivity) and wireless connects to my monitor (Wireless DisplayPort). The first two are here now. The last should be available late this year or early next year. At that point hopefully Android will really be ready to be used as a computer replacement and the phone becomes the computer. But even then I still don’t buy the phone as the entertainment hub.

I think it does not work with my iPhone 4………………not interested in this dock!

  • http://Website J Ferguson

This is the only way I’ve been able to get HBO GO to work successfully (on my television).
Tried the iPad, iPhone 4 and then the ATRIX — works with the ATRIX and the multimedia dock.

  • Henna_Ginger

Right now if you buy the GD dock I think you get the original half price!
