Motorola Atrix 4G should be available in the coming weeks, Feb. 13th for U.S., Mar. 17th for Canada

The majority of our audience thinks I’m an idiot for switching to AT&T, but the Motorola Atrix 4G is the Android phone I have been dreaming of and I’m looking forward to standing in line on launch day and picking one up.

There has been no announcement of an official release date, but Jeff Bradley, Senior VP of devices at AT&T Mobility, said during CES that the Atrix 4G would be availableĀ “in the coming weeks”. The first rumored date was March 1st and now a Best Buy employee said he was told it could arriveĀ around February 13th.

AT&T has an exclusive availability on the launch of the Atrix 4G, but it will also be coming to additional carriers in other countries. Canadian blog Mobile Syrup is reporting that Bell might launch the phone around March 17th, so we expect AT&T should have it on sale well before that.

If you want to receive an email alert as soon as the Motorola Atrix 4G is available, head over to the official AT&T page and sign up now.

Wow omg, will I come with gingerbread and is it vanilla hopefully Motorola and Att don’t retard this awesome looking device.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

No, it will ship with Android 2.2 and Motorola’s Motoblur skin. An update for 2.3 is already being worked on and I assume that Motorola has made this a high priority since the Atrix is their flagship phone.

      • http://Website SphericalPuma

Kind of like how Samsung’s Galaxy S was their flagship phone? lol. Nah, but Samsung is horrible in regards to update, I hear Motorola is decent (Original Blur not included).

        • http://www.toysdiva.com PixelSlave

That depends on your interpretation of what “decent” means. It’s surely better than Samsung, but it’s not as good as HTC.

          • jivemaster

The custom laptop os in the phone may hold it back a bit, and at&t are horrible with updates. I’d say 2.3 will be some time away, and it will be up to the carrier to release it. Definitely don’t hold your breath on that one. Atrix will probably see gingerbread when ice cream sandwich is on the nexus s’ door step.

      • MC

Taylor: the freakin’ CLIQ was Moto’s, “flagship” at one time, too. It took them nearly a year to update it from 1.5 to 2.1. Considering no other phones have had this problem, it’s got to be due to Motoblur! So, go ahead. Buy this thing. Just be happy with the present OS and don’t expect Motorola to make good on any, “promises” (quotes intended) to update to 2.3.

        • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

The CLIQ was also Moto’s first Android phone. They made many mistakes and they have learned from them.

      • http://Website 2FR35H

Dude you are delusional if you believe that this thing will get timely updates. The only motos that do are Verizon Motorola’s

  • http://Website R.S.

If AT&T provides good coverage in your area and you want that phone, I don’t understand why people would be upset about you switching carriers. You don’t owe anything to them.

After almost a decade, I switch from Verizon to TMobile (for a completely different reason) and I don’t regret it at all.

    Enjoy the Atrix!

  • http://Website dagamer34

    Nice phone, bad carrier.

    • http://Website Eric

How can you possibly know that AT&T is a bad carrier where he lives? In my city, order of quality of cell service is sprint (sprint themselves say don’t buy them here), Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T. Where you live it may be 100% different.

Geeze, seems every blog loves to hate on AT&T and everyone that reads them seems to think it’s cool to do the same. AT&T is one of, if not the, most popular carrier in the US. There is a reason for that. People that don’t read the tech blogs have no problem with their service in the area that they live I imagine, because if they did, they’d leave. What’s that say about the millions that don’t leave? Could it be, they actually get perfectly good reception?

      • http://Website N1_user

exactly. where I live, AT&T is boss. I’m looking forward to this phone!

  • http://Website mehLer

    Meh, at&t.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

AT&T has the largest network in Texas so I’m looking forward to see how it performs.

      • DavidM

very true, go Texas. Anyway, I will hopefully get an Atrix fairly soon, seeing as my Captivate will probably never see 2.2 and I have an unused phone upgrade at AT&T

      • http://Website N1_user

in the places I travel in Texas, AT&T is great! no issues. haters will hate, but at the end of the day, go with the service that works best for YOU! AT&T is that service for me. My gf has T-Mobile and hates it. her phone keeps roaming on AT&T anytime we travel, it’s quite hilarious.

    Taylor,

A Moto insider on HoFo claims there is a major flaw in the Olympus/Etna that Moto is going to have to really work on to fix before launch. Any word on this from your sources?

  • http://Website Gary

Does anyone know if the Atrix will be able to run on AT&T’s LTE network when it is up and running?

    Thank you

    • http://Website Eric

Unless Moto is keeping that part very secret (which they probably wouldn’t) it won’t run LTE.

  • whalecliff

Huzzah! I was really dreading having to wait till March. I’ve been dying to get my hands on this bad boy :D

I just hope that this will ship with an unlocked bootloader, or at least one that is easier to crack.

    • http://Website Jeremyj

Buddy, u gotta keep up until further notice motorola will have locked bootloaders because they believe you need to purchase a developer phone for messin around with. Look back like a week or so @androidandme because they covered it. That’s probob?y why you have a neg comment rating

      • whalecliff

I saw the article, I’m just hoping maybe it will ship with that. it’s a stretch for sure.

  • http://Website uzunoff

I wish T mobile gets something like that. Thery are turning to be the middle of the road phone carrier. Nothing exciting about them now. Just the best customer support and cheapest plans. Thery need some awesome phones. And I don’t mean samsung

  • http://Website wallingsworth

phone looks very Samsung Gala-esque. not at all what I would expect from Motorola as far as aesthetics go. hardware is top notch. it’s just a travesty that this phone got stuck on such a shitty carrier (at&t) for those of the faint at heart please excuse my French.

  • http://Website Dennis

NEWS FLASH: NO ONE cares what freaking phone you’re going to get. Seriously, NO ONE. Jeez, acting like your choice of phone is gonna put three square meals on our tables.

    • http://Website Eric

Did you miss the part of the article where he talks about important information? Besides, does his comments about him buying the phone hurt you in any way, shape, or form?

Besides, I do find it interesting to see who uses what phone.

      • http://Website Dennis

The other day, he put up a holy grail, end of the world type article on why he was leaving his “beloved” T-Mobile to switch to AT&T and the Atrix. Talk about being full of yourself.

Coming from a line of 5 htc devices I just want to verify: Motorola = locked bootloader = no custom roms correct? Please tell me I’m wrong as I’d love to have this one.

    • chief113

Yes, the bootloader is locked. I am leaning towards this phone, but am intrigued by your having 5 htc devices. Are they really that good? Should I get the Inspire instead?

      • http://Website Bryanp

Been flashing/cooking roms since 2005 starting with an htc wizard. Just never had issues with HTC and until recent years there hasnt been much else that fit my needs hacking / flashing / strong community needs.

    at&t – yikes!
    motor blur – yikes!
    locked bootloader – yikes!
phone on a carrier with a locked down mindset IE: No downloading outside market – yikes!
for a second this phone is the tits until I come back to the bitter reality that is at&t. do. not. want. ya the phone is nice but all the red flags just go off screaming immediately when Im reminded it’s on at&t. enjoy THEIR phone.

    • http://Website Alex

      Mod parent up.

    • http://Website AkShiz

I totally agree. W’ell see how serous AT&T is over the next year. They are too locky downy for me. No other carrier is as slow as they are to release updates related to Android.

  • http://Website Terry

Where i live, AT&T is pretty awesome. I dont believe I’ve ever had a dropped call here. The data is easily the fastest. So…..Im cool with them. I’d really like to hear some pricing though.

  • http://Website Derek

I’m wondering if the boot loader will be locked? I have a captivate and would love to ditch that in favor of this phone. However, I have experienced blur on a droid X, it blows!

  • http://Website ivan

Why does everyone complain about AT&T, I bet they have never had it before. So shut up already and stop complaining, AT&T is the number 2 carrier in the states for a reason right? And yes they are better than teen mobile by far.

  • http://Website Mikey

This can’t be the phone you’ve dreamed about. Motoblur, atnt, 2.2 instead of the latest 2.3, locked bootloader, and no lte support. Dream bigger taylor..

  • http://Website sniffs

I’m appalled they are calling this “4G”.. are AT&T customers really going to see an increased speed from their current iPhone 4 to this? NO, absolutely not.. and time will tell when consumers start suing for this shenanigans.

AT&T simply doesn’t have anything over 7.2Mbps, and even then, you wont ever hit anything near that.. I have an internal GOBI modem on my laptop that connects in and shows “7.2Mbps” but in reality, I get maybe 1Mbps.. and this is on a corporate building microcell with 3 dedicated T1′s..

Now, on my Verizon LTE 4G aircard(yes yes, it’s not “technically” 4G, but LTE is a 4th generation technology, HSDPA+ is not.).. I’m getting 30Mbps down, 6Mbps up and 40ms response.. Bring on the phones!

    • http://Website N1_user

I regularly get 3Mbps down on AT&T HSPA. obviously, it depends on your location. T-Mobile here where I live is ok but every time my girlfriend and I travel, she tends to roam on AT&T where I typically have full 3G service. T-Mobile is only good if you are underneath an HSPA+ tower, according to our experience. it seems like she does a lot of EDGE roaming with T-Mobile. glad to hear you are getting those speeds on Verizon’s LTE.

      • http://Website TGeezy86

It definitely depends on where you are. Here in my city (Indianapolis) with Tmobile no matter where I am I can pull down at least 5mbps and I’ve maxed out at 10mbps on more than one occasion .And I have HSPA+ everywhere I travel (including all the way down on a road trip to Memphis). Wierdly, all 4 carriers have wonderful coverage here. Just saying…AT&T might suck in one place but be wonderful elsewhere. To each his own…

  • http://Website InspectorGadget80

I CAN’T WAIT. after I pay off this next bill of mine. THIS BABY WILL BE ALL MINE CAN’T WAIT!

  • http://Website Jay

Not sure what everybodies problem with at&t is, I switched almost 2 years ago and haven’t had any issues. No dropped calls or anything (well there is one spot where every carrier loses reception). Sprint however had terrible reception and dropping calls was not uncommon, T-mobile only has edge here, and I’m assuming Verizon has the same coverage as Sprint though I’ve never used their service. So for all those that want to hate on at&t it’d be great if you could just mention if you’ve ever used their service, I bet at least half haven’t.

  • http://Website Darwin

My company’s AT&T rep said it would be out on 2/13 for AT&T about a week ago so I believe it.

  • http://Website MM3

The main problem I have with AT&T is their plan rates, AT&T rates make my Verizon unlimited family plan look inexpensive.

  • http://Website trini2009

Taylor I am also looking forward. To the atrix on bell .I am on Rogers Canada. So I will have to buy the phone out right and get it unlocked . Although with MWC coming up next mth maybe your mind will be blown by another device. I have to ask is the GPS on Motorola devices reliable? That’s gonna play a big part in my decision to buy the device.

  • http://Website jakers

Taylor, any clue if the Atrix 4G will have sideloading of applications disabled?

I’m already married to AT&T, but have stuck with an unlocked Android phone thus far due to that weird limitation. And yes, I know there are ways to get around it.

  • http://Website watbetch

It should already be established that the carrier has say in when phones get their updates after they do their testing and AT&T is currently the WORST carrier for any kind of phone updates so I wouldn’t count on it being significantly better anytime soon.. they still sell the iPhone to most of their new customers.

  • http://Website Time200

AT&T = Data caps. No thanks. That’s reason enough not to use AT&T.

  • http://Website InspectorGadget80

I really don’t care what you guys say bout Moto Blur or AT&T service. I get good service everywhere I go. I’m just so psyched that I get the world powerful phone in the palm of my hand. with AT&T 4G HPSA+. You can bad mouth AT&T all you want. At least I have a DUAL CORE PROCESSOR PHONE in it. and a optional Laptop dock

    • WickedToby741

The phone is only as good as the network. The dual core and accessories can only be put to full use where AT&T’s 3G and 4G (more like 3.5G) work and so long as you don’t exceed your data cap. I may miss out on certain things that the Atrix offers, but with Verizon I get a great, widespread 3G network and true 4G with the same dual core processor in the Bionic. If the Bionic misses out on such things as the laptop dock, I’ll be jealously looking at the capabilities of the Atrix, but not at the network its on. I’m sorry, but its just not worth the price you pay in my opinion. Its kind of like buying a Ferrari and then being told “Oh, by the way this can only be driven where the speed limit is 70 mph or higher and you can only travel 100 miles per month.” Theres a lot of power there, but the restrictions really hold you back.

  • Uncemister

lol standing in line. No one will be standing in line for this. When the mytouch 4g released. I was the only one waiting in my car at the store in Humble, Texas.

Also enjoy your 2gb data caps.

Only plus is they don’t pull a Sprint and charge you more

    • http://Website RIck

Well, yeah, the 2gb data cap stinks. But some of us are lucky enough to be grandfathered with unlimited data (i.e., long-time iphone user). I’m looking forward to owning this phone, but I just hope Android gets Netflix really soon. Otherwise, how will I get the most from my unlimited data plan?

  • WickedToby741

The phone is awesome, the carrier is not. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the accessories make their way to the Bionic and they’re just keeping quiet about them to not steal the spotlight from the Atrix. The Bionic would really benefit from the Atrix docking accessories and Webtop app and I’m really hoping Motorola knows this and plans to bring them to the Bionic.

  • http://Website Blest

Im startingto think that tmobile prides itself in sucking with the worse phones. All of these other hot phones and we get Nexus-S(Nexus1.5), The Vinbrant 1.5(basically), Another Damn Mytouch. And the dell streak. Wheres something revolutionary like…..the Evo?
    Atrix? Maybe even the Bionic.

If it wasnt for your cheap contracts T-mobile. I’d dead our relationship and break up with you.

But My Sexy Nexy keeps me happy at the moment.

  • http://twitter.com/stacika Stacey
