Hands-on the LG Optimus 2X camera

I’m not a very good photographer, but I know enough to have learned that the best pictures often come from the most expensive cameras. Most people write off phone cameras and say they will never be as good as your average point-and-shoot models, but LG is looking to change that perception with their latest Optimus 2X device.

The Optimus 2X features an 8 megapixel camera on the rear that can record 1080p video and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front for video calls. Consider me your average Joe because I can’t tell you much else about the camera technicals.

Check out the video below for a quick walkthrough of the default camera app that ships with the Optimus 2X. Keep in mind this is the international version of the phone, so you might see a different camera app when this phone hits the U.S in a couple of months.

This weekend I took the Optimus 2X to the driving range to see how the camera performed. The default camera app is just loaded with options, but I found it takes great photos with just the default settings. I played around with the continuous shot mode, panorama shot, macro mode, and a few others. You can find the results below or head over to Flickr to see them at full resolution.

I also filmed a couple quick video clips to see how the 1080p looked. Below you will find a sample 1080p video I recorded with the Optimus 2X. Make sure you visit YouTube to upsize the video to the full 1080p resolution. It was an overcast day so this video doesn’t look spectacular, but I will say it was one of the clearest videos I’ve recorded on a phone and played back on my HDTV.

Overall, I would say the LG Optimus 2X offers the best camera of any Android smartphone I have used. We still need to do a lot more testing, but my initial impressions are very positive. I suck at taking good pictures, but the Optimus 2X produced some surprising results that I think are comparable to your average point-and-shoot camera.

I’ll be carrying the Optimus 2X as I travel to Mountain View this week and Barcelona next month, so be on the lookout for more camera samples coming soon. Post your questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to get you an answer.

    Does support HDR?
Can you install Camera 360 and test some HDR pictures?

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Sure, I will download Camera 360 and check it out.

        how did it go?

“so you might see a different camera app when this phone hits the U.S in a couple of months.”

Ok, this is killing me. What carrier will get this phone? I want want want!

    • http://Website Mohsin

      T-Mobile I think.

      • http://Website Carlos Condit

who even said that in the 1st place… Is it just a rumor?

        • Noice

Dunno where the rumor came from, but it tracks.

The bands that it is registered w/ the FCC indicate AT&T or T-mobile. AT&T is launching Astrix, and is not ‘likely’ to push two flagship Android phones launched within days/weeks of each other. So if Tmo doesn’t push it out, the US may not get it. The fact that Andy&me got a demo however, makes me think a U.S. Carrier will have it out soon(tm) – so Tmo is the most likely candidate of the two options.

What camera do you use to film your videos?

And the camera is pretty nice on the 2X. Why would it be different when it comes to the US? What’s the benefit of changing anything? Hopefully different as in adding more.

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

That was filmed on a Canon Vixia HF10.

It is a GSM phone so it should work with both AT&T & T-mobile but I am sure it won’t arrive at any US market. If you really want 1, you got to order it and pay original price.

Clearly, this phone is coming to the US.

now that you tested the camera and worked around with it… can i ask your personal opinion about this comparison?

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

I have never owned an Apple product so I can’t speak to the performance of the iPhone 4.

      • http://Website zeloz

I meant it seems to be claimed that the camera quality is not good and makes pictures look unrealistic….. but your pics seem rather clean

Maybe that iphone4 vs 2X test is fair but I can’t help but be cynical and think that they put the 2X on crappy settings (not 1080p, low colour settings etc) because they look the worst video samples I have seen of the 2X on youtube thus far. Maybe I’m being an Android fanboi but I call sabotage!

Well, phonearena.com, is generally biased towards the iPhone. Many reviews that I have seen say that the camera is quite good (or something along those lines).

Wow… This device is shaping up to be a powerhouse.. As well as the unannounced Optimus 3D smartphone.. Sprint could use these kind of options besides Htc… Thanks for your efforts and time showing us these abilities the device has.. LG is opening my eyes…

The limitations are in the lenses. Yes smartphone cameras are eating into point and shoot. the great strength of having it with you is more important and then quality and at 8mp w/modern small sensors quality is good enough. but for more serious photography you need more room for better lenses.

Not surprising that LG would have such a good camera. My old LG Dare with a 3mp camera took better photos than any Android phone I’ve seen yet.

Loving the Optimus 2X mini reviews! Looking forward to an Optimus 2X vs. Nexus S comparison!

Performance benchmarks are coming later this week. We already know the Optimus 2X is faster, so I chose to focus on some of the experiences first and benchmarks later.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled then. Would be great if you guys get an Atrix review unit too!

Great stuff. I’m really excited about the Optimus 2X, so keep it coming! :D

    I use LG OPTIMUS 2X as well…
