HTC Pyramid revealed in leaked renders

New images have surfaced of the HTC Pyramid, which is expected to be the first Android phone with a dual-core Snapdragon CPU by Qualcomm. The Pyramid codename first surfaced in a rumor report last month, where we said it was likely headed to T-Mobile in May.

Along with the leaked pictures were also some specs which included “Android 3.0, 1.2 GHz processor, 4.3-inch SuperLCD display with qHD resolution (960 x 540), 8 megapixel primary camera and 1.3 megapixel front-facing cameras, and 768MB of RAM”. All of these specs match what we reported last month except for Android 3.0, which we expect to be a miscommunication. It is more likely the HTC Pyramid will launch with Android 2.3.

Qualcomm might end up having the fastest mobile CPU with their dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon (MSM8x60), but they have yet to release performance numbers and we have been unable to benchmark a device yet.

Sprint customers should also pay attention because the rumored EVO 3D might be very similar in hardware specs with the addition of a 3D display.

Several testers in the US already have access to the HTC Pyramid, so we expect an official announcement is coming soon. Hopefully we will learn more in a couple of weeks at CTIA in Orlando.

As you can see, there is no “with Google” but just “Google”. Is it the next Google phone?

    • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Google eventually has to release a dual-core phone for developers. Last I heard Sony Ericsson was in the running for a Nexus launch with an upcoming Tegra 2 device.

      • fatspirit

Sony want to make Nexus T? Hmm….

Please tell me its true! I want the next Nexus to be Sony Ericsson made. I been wanting to go back to them for a while. K750i, K800i and P1 where the best phones I’ve owned besides the N1 and NS of course.

Taylor, do you think Google will release the next developers phone with 2.4 or do you think they will wait until Android 2.5 to release the next nexus?

        • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

My guess is they will have a new device in May for Google I/O.

          • IceCrush

I don’t think so, Sony won’t let you play with their phone root.

@IceCrush, Motorola has always had locked bootloaders too but now the Xoom has an unlockable one.

        • http://Website Daniel

At this point, it’s pretty much technically impossible for there to be a 2.4 or 2.5. API levels must be sequential; 2.3.3 is level 10, 3.0 is level 11. There’s no room for an intermediate release. Any release greater than 11 MUST inherit all the new platform features of 3.0, including the holographic theme and action bar enabled by default, at which point it doesn’t make any sense not to continue the 3.x series.

The only way there could be a 2.4 is if it had zero platform changes, i.e., exclusively bugfixes and app updates, no new features at all. But then it makes no sense to call it 2.4, just call it 2.3.3r1 or 2.3.4.

          • http://Website Nathan Olonoff

the rumors for 2.4 is nothing but gingerbread with all the bug fixes and dual core support, nothing other than that. and obviously google could change their mind and make it 2.3.4

            Got a source for that?

            JaylanPHNX:
The problem is that 3.0 leaves a lot of holes on how the new features should behave on mobile phones, both in implementation and documentation. For example, it’s unclear how the new action bar will interact with the physical menu button, having both at the same time is very redundant. Manufacturers could try to guess how this will work out, but the odds of them guessing wrong and breaking stuff once Google releases the official new behavior are very high.

I agree. Google should increase their offerings for developer phones. The Android Dev Phone 2 is still sold with 1.6.

I noticed this morning that it is now out of stock, so perhaps that is a sign that Google is preparing to release a new developer phone.

“Thank you for your interest in the Android Dev Phone 2. Unfortunately, we are out of stock. We apologize for any inconvenience but please check back. “

They just announced the Desire S (which isn’t even out), and Nexus S is still fairly new. I find it unlikely that either device would be announced by now. Perhaps in Q3, but I wouldn’t bet on it, and by Q4 it’s not top of line anymore anyway.

IT IS a dual-core phone (at least according to the leaked spec.) Did you read the FIRST sentence:

New images have surfaced of the HTC Pyramid, which is expected to be the first Android phone with a dual-core Snapdragon CPU by Qualcomm.

      It says, “dual-core Snapdragon CPU”.

Orginal source for this does not indicate it as a Dual Core

Android and me are just expecting it to be but source says otherwise

        • http://Website geiko

Dude, the “original source” you keep citing is just another blog like AAM. A Chinese site actually leaked this. All they’re saying here is that based on earlier tips, this phone will be a dual core. Just like the earlier tips, these are also just rumors. So if you want to throw out the first tips that they leaked here, you might as well throw this away too. Stop being a troll, intentionally or not.

        • http://Website JohnB

This is a dual-core phone for sure. Check out the benchmark numbers for the Pyramid. It might be tested with a prototype so it looks a bit underwhelming, but clearly it is a dual-core:

          • http://Website Jon

and beyond that, Android And Me AND TMo News have both been leaking info on the Pyramid for months, and both have it confirmed that the Pyramid is a dual core handset.

Most likely it’s going to be the 1.2Ghz Dual Core Snapdragon that started shipping almost 6 months ago and was recently seen at MWC and CES in a few devices.

    • http://Website AC

Usually people only read the first line and directly jump onto assumptions and comments, and I would slightly forgive them for that.

However the word “Dual Core” is already in the first sentence.

This just shows that you have no effort in reading skills.

      • http://Website Trev186

If you check the actual source they got this from it says “a 1.2 ghz processor”. Some people are still expecting it to be dual core but the actual article everyone is sourcing does not indicate a Dual core and based off of HTC’s line lately they seem to see no urgency to do so

        • http://androidandme.com Taylor Wimberly

Pyramid is dual-core, despite what the source says.

          • http://Website Trev86

Heres to praying this is the first Gingerbread 2.4 device and it comes in a sense and nexus flavor.

    • Scotter

It will be either Gingerbread (2.3 like is on the two current Nexus Phones) or… as it says in the article, it will be Honeycomb 3.0. Some people seem surprised or doubtful about it being 3.0. I disagree. Honeycomb has already been created for tablets and I imagine as they were creating Honeycomb, they were abstracting certain elements (like screen size and hardware controls) so that the OS could easily be adapted to different form factors.

      • http://Website Daniel

3.x will arrive on phones, you can take that for granted. I just doubt it will be 3.0, more likely 3.1 or 3.5.

        • http://Website Nathan Olonoff

what i wonder though is how it can be honeycomb, or any flavor of 3.0.

because according to google 3.0 and honeycomb is a tablet exclusive and ice cream will start bringing them together, and last we heard ice cream was September at the earliest.

so either these people just screwed up and it’s just a newer version of gingerbread with dual core support. second option is that it’s somehow honeycomb, but a 3.1 like you guys are saying.

Or this device isn’t going to be released until fall/winter and it’ll be the first ice cream device. which would suck to have to wait, but would be well worth it. but at the same time, we all know that 8 months from now the Tegra3, Kal-El would be out and this device will pretty much be obsolete.

so heres to hoping that it shows up at CITA next week or at Google I/O and we can buy them shortly after.

          • http://Website JaylanPHNX

Or another option: Android is open source and OEMs are free to alter the code as they wish (hence Sense, Blur, etc). Who’s to say HTC can’t say, “I got your tablet-only right here!” and make a honeycomb phone if they want? It’s more likely the sources are just confused, but it’s not impossible that it’s 3.0.

    • http://Website Daniel

At this point, it’s pretty much technically impossible for there to be a 2.4. API levels must be sequential; 2.3.3 is level 10, 3.0 is level 11. There’s no room for an intermediate release. I want to get the Atrix so I can have a dual core device to last me the next year, but with my gorilla hands I’d really like to get that extra .3″. I’d switch to sprint for this device. I want this to actually drop at CITA instead of just being announced. Waiting sucks

Then you should wait for the Targa, Droid 3, or Droid X II that was also leaked in photos today. The Targa looks sexy.

I’m a Sprint user so I’ll stay. I want to have options between this if it is for Sprint, Nexus S4G if it’s more then the 4G added, Evo successor, Galaxy S II, & possibly a dual core Nexus phone when Google comes out with that. I hope they push to all carriers & don’t wait. Stop being one sided. If your making a phone to represent then let everyone be able to use it.

The Pyramid probably is the HTC EVO 2…I suspect this will be come March 22nd at CTIA hopefully it will come with 1gb of ram NOT THIS 768 of ram…Remember this is suppose to be the replacement for the htc evo 4g so yes they will have to come STRONG on the specs Screen size 4.5 inch super lcd or tft 960 yb 580 resolution qhd ..1gb of ram, htc sense with 3d technology, 8to16 internal memory, with DNLA technology, and NFC technology, some kind of carbon copy of this will be made for tmobile some form of a way…

    • http://Website Virtue

I’m going to burst your bubble right away and say that it is supposed to be for T-Mobile. Plus, Sprint already has great phones, just wait. Your time will come. But for now, we’re going to have this awesome phone and you aren’t. =P

      • http://Website AceoStar

I hear this from T-Mobile a lot, “X has great phones, why don’t we”. TMobile has gotten more stock devices than any other carrier, that says a lot in itself. TMobile also got the Nexus S which is yet to be launched on other US carriers. You may not have a dual core phone yet, but neither does anyone else other than AT&T

        • http://Website Virtue

My comment doesn’t say anything on what I think about T-Mobile’s phones although I know it how it may seem that way. What I meant to say was that Sprint has great phones and that I don’t understand why people keep complaining about them. Same goes for T-Mobile. Great selection, yet all I’ve heard were the complaints.

  • http://Website UniqueNate

I wonder if the buttons will rotate like on the latest HTC phones. Even though this design is similar to what they’ve made before it still manages to be really sexy. It’s rumors that this will be the Evo II or the Evo 3D will be. Some are saying this is that all together. Personally I think the LG 3D phone will be the Evo 3D. Not the successor but remember Evo is a brand name so when you hear that it doesn’t mean successor. Like Verizon does for the droids. I have a feeling the Evo 3D won’t be the successor but another Evo addition to whatever the Evo II will be. Reason I say that is because I don’t see everyone wanting a 3D PHONE unless you can turn it off. Idk. It’s to early to say.

Did anyone see the latest leak on droid 3, Droid X2, and Targa phone. Not Tegra but Targa? You can google it. They look interesting…. The Targa does.

    • http://Website Virtue

I have no idea how many Nexus ideas I shot down today. First, the menu button is no indication of the Nexus. The Incredible S has the same menu button and it has Sense. Second, the LG Optimus 2X prototype had Google branding on it. It did not turn out to be stock AND the final production version says With Google. This render is probably the same thing. And color scheme? Really? This has more in common with the HTC 7 Mozart which has a similar triangular cut out on the back of the phone than the N1.

Your getting to excited. Just like the Evo shift. That’s really a Desire Z but branded Evo. It’s all marketing & to differ between individual carriers. Evo itself was a big selling point, so it’s a brand now. Time wise, it is ready for a number 2, but don’t jump so quick & hit your head.

That is just HTC’s design. Just look at the Desire, Wildfire, Nexus One, Desire Z, Desire HD, Desire S, Wildfire S, even ChaCha, Salsa and Flyer. They all have similar design traits. And if you look at the GSM Hero, you’ll see it was already leading to this line. And Samsung’s Nexus S looks nothing like the N1, so this is definitely HTC’s doing, not something decided by Google or the N1.

The specs that are disappointing are the 768 Ram, the 1.3 meg. pix front camera!!

The other very disappointing thing is the obvious designs and color. Very minor things have changed with this and other HTC designs, which is boring to death and nothing new to get excited about.

    • http://Website James

The design is gorgeous, and of higher quality than most other phones, it will most likely have 1GB of RAM like the EVO 3D, and 1.3mp for the front-facing camera is amazing for a phone!!!! It’s way higher than the screen resolution of the device, so it’s higher than it needs to be, and it’s higher than the iPad 2′s VGA FFC! In fact, I think it’s 1.3mp is the highest FFC on a smartphone to date.

As you can see, there is no “with Google” but just “Google”. Is it the next Google phone?

    • Google eventually has to release a dual-core phone for developers. Last I heard Sony Ericsson was in the running for a Nexus launch with an upcoming Tegra 2 device.

      • Sony want to make Nexus T? Hmm….

      • SocalTekniqueGuest 4 years ago

Please tell me its true! I want the next Nexus to be Sony Ericsson made. I been wanting to go back to them for a while. K750i, K800i and P1 where the best phones I’ve owned besides the N1 and NS of course.

      • Nate957Guest 4 years ago

Taylor, do you think Google will release the next developers phone with 2.4 or do you think they will wait until Android 2.5 to release the next nexus?

        • My guess is they will have a new device in May for Google I/O.

        • DanielGuest 4 years ago

          • Nathan OlonoffGuest 4 years ago

the rumors for 2.4 is nothing but gingerbread with all the bug fixes and dual core support, nothing other than that. and obviously google could change their mind and make it 2.3.4

          • DanielGuest 4 years ago

            Nathan:
            > because according to google 3.0 and honeycomb is a tablet exclusive and ice cream will start bringing them together, and last we heard ice cream was September at the earliest.

    • PixelSlaveGuest 4 years ago

IT IS a dual-core phone (at least according to the leaked spec.) Did you read the FIRST sentence:

New images have surfaced of the HTC Pyramid, which is expected to be the first Android phone with a dual-core Snapdragon CPU by Qualcomm.

      It says, “dual-core Snapdragon CPU”.

    • ACGuest 4 years ago

Usually people only read the first line and directly jump onto assumptions and comments, and I would slightly forgive them for that.

However the word “Dual Core” is already in the first sentence.

This just shows that you have no effort in reading skills.

      • Trev186Guest 4 years ago

If you check the actual source they got this from it says “a 1.2 ghz processor”. Some people are still expecting it to be dual core but the actual article everyone is sourcing does not indicate a Dual core and based off of HTC’s line lately they seem to see no urgency to do so

Heres to praying this is the first Gingerbread 2.4 device and it comes in a sense and nexus flavor.

    • It will be either Gingerbread (2.3 like is on the two current Nexus Phones) or… as it says in the article, it will be Honeycomb 3.0. Some people seem surprised or doubtful about it being 3.0. I disagree. Honeycomb has already been created for tablets and I imagine as they were creating Honeycomb, they were abstracting certain elements (like screen size and hardware controls) so that the OS could easily be adapted to different form factors.

      • DanielGuest 4 years ago

3.x will arrive on phones, you can take that for granted. I just doubt it will be 3.0, more likely 3.1 or 3.5.

        • Nathan OlonoffGuest 4 years ago

what i wonder though is how it can be honeycomb, or any flavor of 3.0.

because according to google 3.0 and honeycomb is a tablet exclusive and ice cream will start bringing them together, and last we heard ice cream was September at the earliest.

so either these people just screwed up and it’s just a newer version of gingerbread with dual core support. second option is that it’s somehow honeycomb, but a 3.1 like you guys are saying.

          • JaylanPHNXGuest 4 years ago

Or another option: Android is open source and OEMs are free to alter the code as they wish (hence Sense, Blur, etc). Who’s to say HTC can’t say, “I got your tablet-only right here!” and make a honeycomb phone if they want? It’s more likely the sources are just confused, but it’s not impossible that it’s 3.0.

    • DanielGuest 4 years ago

    • VirtueGuest 4 years ago

I’m going to burst your bubble right away and say that it is supposed to be for T-Mobile. Plus, Sprint already has great phones, just wait. Your time will come. But for now, we’re going to have this awesome phone and you aren’t. =P

      • AceoStarGuest 4 years ago

I hear this from T-Mobile a lot, “X has great phones, why don’t we”. TMobile has gotten more stock devices than any other carrier, that says a lot in itself. TMobile also got the Nexus S which is yet to be launched on other US carriers. You may not have a dual core phone yet, but neither does anyone else other than AT&T

        • VirtueGuest 4 years ago

My comment doesn’t say anything on what I think about T-Mobile’s phones although I know it how it may seem that way. What I meant to say was that Sprint has great phones and that I don’t understand why people keep complaining about them. Same goes for T-Mobile. Great selection, yet all I’ve heard were the complaints.

  14. UniqueNateGuest 4 years ago

A solar panel this size would be horrible for charging the phone, though. This is not a pocket calculator, its energy consumption is orders of magnitude higher.

  20. nexus babyGuest 4 years ago

This is definitely the next nexus. Look at the button arrangement. the menu button looks like both nexuses menu and no other phone uses that style. Plus the same color scheme and the google branding on the back.
    NEXUS 2

    • VirtueGuest 4 years ago

I have no idea how many Nexus ideas I shot down today. First, the menu button is no indication of the Nexus. The Incredible S has the same menu button and it has Sense. Second, the LG Optimus 2X prototype had Google branding on it. It did not turn out to be stock AND the final production version says With Google. This render is probably the same thing. And color scheme? Really? This has more in common with the HTC 7 Mozart which has a similar triangular cut out on the back of the phone than the N1.

    • DanielGuest 4 years ago

Um, no. That’s HTC’s new button design. Desire S, Nexus S, Wildfire S, Flyer, ChaCha, Salsa.

My Guess is this will have Sense because HTC already has a vanilla android phone for Tmobile(G2) and they have no regular sense phone. The mytouch is a special kinda of sense. So my guess would be this is tmobile’s first original sense phone.

    • VirtueGuest 4 years ago

That would be my guess as well. It’s good to finally have Sense on T-Mobile. Gives the consumers options and for those who want stock, there’s always custom ROMs since HTC’s pretty easygoing on their bootloaders.

I dont think the Evo 3D will be a successor. It’ll be an Evo branded phone. & since it’ll be 3D why not have it on a big screen. So the LG 3D phone could be that. Evo II is something by itself.

The other very disappointing thing is the obvious designs and color. Very minor things have changed with this and other HTC designs, which is boring to death and nothing new to get excited about.
