Android Rumor Breakdown: Google Music

Very few people are willing to argue that Android has a truly great music app, even one not made by Google. There are some that try really hard, and get a few things right here and there, but it’s been something that has left the Android experience somewhat lacking. I can’t tell you how many people I have met who have an Android phone AND an iPod or Zune, simply because Android does not offer a similar experience yet. The closest we have seen to a truly new music experience for Android was the new UI for the Android 3.0 music app.

Additionally, we’ve recently seen the emergence of the Amazon cloud player, offering 5GB of free storage for your music, and inexpensive yearly plans for much more space to hold your tunes. Ever since I/O last year, Android fans have been teased and tortured at the hints and rumors that a Google powered cloud music system for Android was on it’s way. As it stands now, very few online services can compete with Amazon’s Cloud Player in terms of functionality, and none of them also offer a competitively priced music store built right into the app.

Recent events at Google HQ lead us to believe that the Google cloud based music player and store is right around the corner, though the details are just as vague as they were a year ago. So, we’ve scoured the web and combined everything legit we could find  in the hopes of shedding some light on this Google Music redux.

The Screenshots

Recently the guys over at Techfrom10 were victims of a happy accident in which they were granted access to the Google Dev team’s “special” Android Market, used for internal testing. While those guys wen spelunking through the entire market, the shots they got of the Music app show us a new UI that could be described as a phone optimized version of the music app seen on any Honeycomb tablet. Additionally, we see in the settings panel for the app some options for caching, downloading, and streaming music from an online source, options that are not currently found in the Honeycomb app.

Google Preparing for Web Delivery

Maybe it was Amazon, maybe it was Google’s plan all along, or maybe someone at Google HQ got a hold of the company credit card and went bananas, but Google’s been buying up domains left and right. Domains like GoogleAlto.com, GoogleThunder.com, GoogleSoprano.com, and GoogleNebula.com to name a few. All of the names revolve around music or have a cloud related name, mostly music. None of these domains go anywhere yet, but it can’t be long until we see something pop up in one of these domains.

I/O is Right Around the Corner

Google’s great big developer conference is less than a month away now, making it the perfect place to drop their new music service. There’s been speculation all over about what Google will be bringing to I/O, even rumors that Android will not be a big focus this year. At Google’s League of Extraordinary Hackers event during SXSW this year, it was made plenty clear that the big focuses would be uniting Honeycomb and Google TV, as well as a heavier focus on Google’s web technologies. Google Music would suffice as a significant Android announcement, without focusing an entire keynote on it.

I’m sure that in the coming weeks more information will continue to slip into the ravenous hands of those eager to see Google step up and release a music service that rivals the current competition, but for now these seem like the biggest indicators of what the Music service has in store for us, and when we can really expect to dive into this new entertainment experience. Are you ready for Google Music?

I write things.

I’m sure Google has been working toward some type of cloud music service and most likely will present it at I/O.

The thing I don’t get about Amazon’s cloud music service is, why have each user upload their actual files instead of verifying that a certain file is a song and matching that to a central database of music then stream from that central database. If they did it that way then everyone would have unlimited “storage” for their music because all you would really have in your cloud music account is playlists of songs that link to the central database, unless of course you have some music that isn’t contained in the central database. Of course the option to download music you own would still be there.

I just don’t get wasting all this disk space for each user. . . . yeah, I know it’s one way to attempt getting a fee from users. I hope Google has thought about this.

    • http://weudelon.com Weudel

@acupunc … Amazon did it that way to keep the record companies from having a solid case against them. As it stands they can at least argue that these are all the user’s files that they are merely hosting for them. If Amazon was using a centralized database then legally Amazon would be streaming the content instead of just feed the user back what they uploaded.

    • http://txhoudini.com txhoudini

The reason is because of the convoluted licencing that the music industry uses. You do not own any music according to the music industry. When you purchase a CD or a download you purchase a licence to play that music for personal use.

Amazon Cloud service as it is now is just storage for your files (no matter the file type, like Dropbox) and they “just happen” to have a great player that plays the music files. Most experts agree this is 100% legal according to the music licence agreements that Amazon has. The burden of the licence is on the end user.

If Amazon were to host the files they would have to develop a method to assure that you have the proper licence for that music before they would serve it to you. The burden of the licence is on the service. This is what mp3.com tried to do before they got sued out of existence.

It’s a technicality but going with the first scenario is what allowed Amazon to be first to market while Google tries to negotiate the licencing for the second (and I agree superior) scenario.

      • http://Website B

Why is that convoluted? Yea you own the CD, but why would you own the actual recorded music on that disc? If you did own that music, wouldn’t you be allowed to claim it as yours and resell it to other people?

        • http://txhoudini.com txhoudini

It’s convoluted because you are not free to do what you want with what you have exchanged your money for. They say you are buying a licence for the music but what happens if you walk out of a store with a CD or

Imagine buying a shirt but they say you don’t actually own the shirt, you own a licence to wear the shirt for personal reasons. You are not allowed to share the shirt, sell the shirt, or display the shirt in public. Absurd right?

I deal with music licencing quite often and each time it is a confusing mess. No two situations have gone down the same. Sometimes the band owns the licence, a single band member owns the licence, the label owns the licence, the label that the band runs owns the licence, etc. And each situation requires different signatures, contracts and payment structures.

Amazon issued an open letter to the labels that is quite interesting and shows what they are planning for in the future: http://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2011/04/full-text-of-amazons-cloud-music-email-to-labels.html

      • http://trueacu.com acupunc

Thanks for the very thorough explanation. I never thought about the licensing as a customer. . . that’s rather odd but sounds like the music industry.

Well Google Music already exist and Google has already launched it, just not for any other country except for China. Google launched Google Music in China to compete with Baidu’s music. You can buy music and lyrics. So now they are going to share it with the rest of the world.

I have an EVO and a ipod the only real reason I have both is because I have Rhapsody and the only way to get it to play on my car stereo from the EVO is through the head phone Jack, which after using the ipod proprietary connector sounds like finger nails on the chalk board. If Rhapsody would work on my car stereo likePandora, the ipod would be gone. I really would like to use the android apps, but all you can do right now is use the head unit to play purchased music, which is worse than texting.

  • http://Website Curly

Your initial paragraph begs the question what you think Apple or Microsoft’s phone’s have that Google’s doesn’t?

I’ve used Songbird, the native HTC player, Winamp and a multitude of other 3rd party offerings. All of which played music and were all fine. You fail to explain what you think is missing and why the other phones are better.

Personally, I just need something that plays music on random play and scrobbles music. Android’s got plenty that do this.

Music isn’t even my main problem with android, it’s the games.

I carry around both an Evo 4G and the ipod touch 4.

I use my android phone for the web and for some apps, and my ipod for music and the games.

There’s not only more games available for iOS, but the games feel a lot more optimized for my ipod than my Evo.

Please don’t think I’m an apple fanboy, I love Android, but this is a much bigger problem than the music player.

I am now removing the bookmark to this pathetic site, I’ll come back if you do something about the commenting.

    • http://Website Mike

I think this website should change their comments to Duqus, which will greatly reduce the amount of “anonymous” comments, and they should hire even more employees.

Here’s what I think about the top blog websites:

Androidandme: Great articles that are fun to read and an excellent mobile website, but the rate of new articles is way too slow when compared to the competition and there’s not as many articles.

Phandroid: they post a lot of articles and they’re usually able to post their articles sooner than this website, but their website is poorly designed and their articles are very basic, making them slightly boring to read.

Engadget: they post even more articles than phandroid and they use Duqus for comments, but their writers seem to be very biased against android and they cover literally everything technology related, which is too much.

So, I think the best two blogs for Android news is androidandme and phandroid. If I was you, I would continue reading both blogs; this one for more of the opinions and the rumors, and phandroid to make sure you’re getting all of the news.

Also, if Clark or another androidandme employee is reading this, I want you to know that your blog seriously needs to hire more employees. Although a few more workers were just recently hired, the rate of the articles is still way too slow.

Almost agree. Rather we had one website that went for quality rather than quantity – otherwise they would all be the same!

I agree with you but I would use Disqus rather than Duqus. I don’t know what that is.

Sorry, I meant to say “Disqus.”

A new commenting system is in the works. I honestly think what we will have in the future will be better than Disqus.

Really don’t want to plug my phone into a computer and mess about with software trying to ‘sync’ files – it is a horrible way to do things. Only there for DRM. Rather it was a seamless ‘cloud’ experience like gmail, so this is interesting. I do wonder of there will be any DRM checks though – for people who have used the free music downloads from the market ;)

    PowerAmp – that is all.

Agreed. Turns your cellphone into a pocketable boombox.

  • http://Website Joshua

For the comments that I can actually read because they aren’t hidden, I agree with a lot of you that the big benefit of Google will be a cloud service. I am not nearly into music as I used to be and don’t really listen much. However, I would love to have my songs on a cloud rather than taking up space on my memory card for when I rarely play them. Now if they would come out with a damn car dock that takes advantage of the pins on the friggin MyTouch 4g than I would probably listen to my phone in my car rather than the radio. Actually, i might not, who knows. There are a lot of possibilities that Apple just can’t do.

  • http://Website Joshua

FYI, i’ve tried powerAmp and some other player that costs money and neither are worth paying for when you can get that cube player for free. (it’s an actual 3 symbol for cubed) . It’s hard to find in the market but if you search releases or concerts you can find an addon to it that tells you if there are any upcoming concerts or new releases for the songs in your music collection. The best of all in my opinion.

I don’t like having my music on my phone cause it just kills the battery. I have an Android phone and an Ipod. I just like to keep my phone and music seperate. Even if I had an Iphone, I’d still have an Ipod. I do have pandora on my phone so the times im without my ipod and i do wanna listen to some music I can just pick a station for the type of music I wanna hear.

    • WeudelGuest 4 years ago

@acupunc … Amazon did it that way to keep the record companies from having a solid case against them. As it stands they can at least argue that these are all the user’s files that they are merely hosting for them. If Amazon was using a centralized database then legally Amazon would be streaming the content instead of just feed the user back what they uploaded.

    • txhoudiniGuest 4 years ago

      • BGuest 4 years ago

Why is that convoluted? Yea you own the CD, but why would you own the actual recorded music on that disc? If you did own that music, wouldn’t you be allowed to claim it as yours and resell it to other people?

        • txhoudiniGuest 4 years ago

      • acupuncGuest 4 years ago

Thanks for the very thorough explanation. I never thought about the licensing as a customer. . . that’s rather odd but sounds like the music industry.

  6. CurlyGuest 4 years ago

    • MikeGuest 4 years ago

      • JoshuaGuest 4 years ago

I agree with you but I would use Disqus rather than Duqus. I don’t know what that is.

        • MikeGuest 4 years ago

Sorry, I meant to say “Disqus.”

      • A new commenting system is in the works. I honestly think what we will have in the future will be better than Disqus.

Don’t hate the website daveloft. Just hate the trolls and the naysayers. i.e. ITUNES.

    • TrollhaterGuest 4 years ago

Agreed. Turns your cellphone into a pocketable boombox.

  20. you guys really need mods to clean up these spammers

Whoa. Where did the n-word come from? I thought the comments were suppose to be about music modification for google. Ignorance new name is eat poop.

PowerAmp on myTouch 4G beats any iPod/iPhone.

iTrolls love their iTunes. The most bloated, overrated, saddest program ever. The iLemmings keep trying to force feeding all of us that don’t “exist” in the iMatrix. Leave us Droids alone man. We don’t waste our time trying iDoctrinate you all! Go ask Master Steve or Overlord Jobs or whatever, if you can have your life back. Losers like juanita89, the helping hand (again as the helping hand returns) go to CrApple sites where you can worship at the Altar of Jobs. As for eat poop I hope they ban you. I’m black, and I here to read about Android, not you N-word bull.
