Verizon’s 4G LTE network down, no blazing speeds for now (Verizon Update: 4G is back)

Just one day before the release of Verizon’s second 4G LTE phone, the Samsung Droid Charge, Verizon’s 4G network is down (since last night), and all Thunderbolt users are experiencing some speed limitations. While some people seem to be able to still access 3G speeds, most Thunderbolt users claim that their device is actually stuck on 1x, while all 3G devices still function properly (ouch!). Gladly, for those that are stuck on 1x speeds, Our friends over at Droid Life have provided us with a possible fix to this issue, which should allow you to jump right back to 3G.

Dial ##778# and hit send
* A pop-up window named EPST will show up giving you 2 choices: View Mode and Edit Mode. Pick: Edit Mode.
* Enter the Password: 000000
* Go down to Modem Settings and pick “Rev A“
* You’ll want to choose enable and click OK, hit the menu button and then press “Commit Modifications.”
* Restart your phone and you should see 3G is working
To switch back to 3G/4G, follow same instructions but choose eHRPD.spursrchamps2007from Droid Life

While Verizon has an outstanding 4G network, such issue will leave no good impressions if the problem continues for long, especially if the Droid Charge hits the counters without 4G connectivity, or maybe even 3G. Verizon has officially reached out to its customers via their Twitter account, mentioning that they are aware of the problem, and their engineers are “working to resolve this quickly.”

Keep coming back for more updates about this, and let us know what you think of Verizon’s 4G network being down. If you are a 4G user, tell us what you are going through. Verizon LTE users are spoiled with blazing speeds, now that you are being reminded of what things used to be like before 4G, does 3G now seem obsolete to you?

    Sounds like something blew up with the RUIM/USIM authentication systems. That’s one of the few ways that errors on the 4G LTE system would cause 3G to be inaccessible on 4G LTE phones. Most people aren’t aware of this, but Verizon’s 4G LTE SIM cards are not just for 4G LTE. Verizon reworked the CDMA2000 authentication system to use the OHA protocols, meaning that their CDMA network is the only one in the United States that supports using CDMA2000 phones that use RUIM authentication to the network. Since this issue only affects the 4G LTE phones, which use the USIM to authenticate on both CDMA2000 and LTE, it is almost certainly a network auth issue. By forcing the EVDO Rev A. modem active, the phone switched to OHA auth mode, so it uses OHA authentication protocols instead of the LTE authentication protocols.

    This procedure only worked for me with the addition of switchg 4g off. There are shortcuts to do this in the market.

      Dick please explain why lte smoked that 56k wimax? Talk about pathetic, edge is blazing fast compared to that crap you call REAL 4g

      • http://Website poops

        easy. lte currently isn’t supporting even 1/50th the customer base that wimax is. as it stands right now, comparing lte speeds to wimax speeds is like saying “lol my pc benches faster than yours” — your pc wasn’t running anything in the backround while mine was doing a virus scan, defrag, encoding a 1080p movie, and running folding@home.

    I have a new 4G air card and have no service all day. After wasting lots of time trying everything to reconnect, Verizon support tells me there is nothing I can do but wait – can’t use 3G or even 1x speed… Although their service and coverage has been better here, ATT (where I have my iPhone) is catching up – and their customer support is MUCH better!!!

    I have a Droid Charge and as of last night I have no network connectivity. No 4G, 3G or even 1G. Why is that? I’m right now having to use the wireless in my house just to get on the network. Can anyone tell me what they think is going on?
