Motorola Xoom getting Android 3.1 update soon

Google I/O made a successful take-off yesterday, and among the main announcements was the new update to Honeycomb, Android 3.1. Soon afterwards, when they gave away the 5,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1′s, Samsung mentioned that their tablet would be receiving this update soon. Of course, Motorola did not want to be left behind with the almighty Xoom, their flagship Honeycomb tablet. Motorola has just announced that they will be updating their Xoom tablets to Android 3.1 Honeycomb, giving all its users the following features:

  • Support for the new Android Market movie rentals service with thousands of titles available for immediate viewing on the Motorola XOOM’s high-resolution display or on a larger screen via HDMI
  • Full support for the final release of Adobe® Flash® Player 10.2, delivering significant performance enhancements when viewing rich Flash content on the web
  • Resizable widgets to enable further customization of home screens
  • Support for USB-connected peripherals and accessories, such as keyboards, mice, game controllers and digital cameras
  • Expanded Bluetooth features to support Bluetooth headsets in Google Talkâ„¢ video chats and Bluetooth mouse support in addition to additional shortcut keys with the Bluetooth keyboard
  • Picture Transfer Protocol Feature support to enable easier transfer of photo files to your PC without the need for drivers

Motorola Mobility Inc.

Said OTA update should start rolling out to Verizon customers this week, followed by “all other variants” of the tablet (WiFi-only/Sprint versions), which will receive the update “within the next several weeks.” Do not fear, for Motorola seems to be working hard on getting all Xooms updated in a timely fashion. After all, it is not common for a non-Nexus device to receive an update so quickly after Google’s announcement, so things are looking brighter for the future!

Check out the official press release after the break, and share your comments with us! Let us know when you guys start receiving the update, and tell us what you think of it!

This is great news! I just bought a Xoom Wifi model. When i was standing in the store I was debating whether to get the Xoom for $600 (ouch) or to save a few bucks and get the ASUS honeycomb tablet for $450. Im now thinking i chose wisely because just as i predicted, the Xoom is getting attention first. Who know’s how long ASUS will take to update their tablet.

Sure but the Asus has a much better (IPS) display and a working microSD slot.

Was wondering if you heard anything about Acer Iconia Tablet getting the upgrade as well?

    Thanks

What is interesting is that the upgrade STILL doesn’t support the SD Card slot. So many users will be torn between staying with Tiamat, or moving to this upgrade. Though those who are patient will eventually get both.

Yeah im very surprised they sent this thing out into the world without the SD card slot working. Im hoping 3.1 flips the switch on that feature.

I haven’t heard anything yet about the Iconia or the Transformer getting the update yet. This was a huge reason i spent a bit more and went with moto’s flagship tablet.
