Verizon to kill unlimited data plans this summer, but will make it up with family data plans

That was fun while it lasted. Verizon is planning to kill unlimited data plans this summer, says Reuters. Instead, the carrier will begin offering  tiered data plans, penalizing those of us who consume a lot of data. This leaves Sprint as the only option — aside from regional carriers — for people that want a truly unlimited data plan.

To make us feel better, Verizon will soon introduce shared family data plans. Families will be able to buy a certain amount of data and share it among all family members and different devices — like a tablet. While at first sight this might look like a good thing, it could also turn into your worst nightmare. It won’t be long before we start hearing stories of how little Tommy downloaded a bunch of 4GB movies and now daddy has to pay $200 in fees.

I hope you enjoyed surfing the web on your phone freely and without worries. The ride is now over, and the carriers want us to pay up. On a brighter note, I know who my next carrier will be, and it starts with an “S”.

I doubt you can transfer an unlimited plan to a new phone when it is time to upgrade.

      • http://Website Ivan Samuelson

I’m pretty sure as long as you upgrade to a phone that uses the same technology as your current phone (for example, my droid is 3G), you’ll get to keep the plan. It’s only if I get a phone that doesn’t have 3G and then I’ll have to lose my current data plan.

I don’t plan on upgrading for awhile anyways and I’m pretty sure in about 15 months, there will still be plenty of 3G droids that I can choose from.

As it is, after this next upgrade, my “New every Two” is done. It might be time to eventually switch, but that means switching myself, my wife and my daughters over to a different carrier. THAT will be a major pain!

      • Teardrops2064

nope, weather that is the fact, it wont be that way, it goes for eveyone! they are changeing this in everyones family plan, i talked with a verizon person last night, and i told her just how pissed i was and this was bs, due to the fack we as a customer didnt get any notification on our pha that this was going to take place, verizon and the other ones had to put a mm out on this this way so now they will be hearing all the bad things.

its due to all the new phones comming out, with all these new chips and other thingsi n them, so now we as a customer have to suffer and pay these big fricken family share data plans again

    • http://Website Palmer

Amen Brotha! To use the trite, yet oh-so-appropriate phrase, they can pry it from my cold dead hands!

  • http://Website Erik

Wait, so this isn’t going to be one of those things where those of us who already have unlimited data can just keep it??? And this doesnt only apply to new contracts….?!?

    • Alberto Vildosola

You’ll probably keep the unlimited plan as long as you don’t buy a new phone.

    • Teardrops2064

this aaply to the ones who have to update there contracts and thats when it takes effect! surprize to you and your new family plan! i know im not happy with it either, but if sprint isnt doing this yet ,,,THEY WILL BE HERE SOON!! SO IT DONT MATTER WHERE YOU GO FOR A CARRIER IT WILL ALL BE DONT THROUGH ALL THEN CARRIERS!!!

      • Teardrops2064

IT APPLY TO THE ONES WHO ARE UP FOR A NEW CONTRACT. BUT IF THEY ARE LIMINATING THESE NOW, DOESNT THIS MEAN WE NO LONGER ARE IN A UNLIMITED FAMLY SHARE PLAN? I WOULDNT THINKS SO!

I’m glad I’m on Sprint. Nothing makes up for taking away unlimited data. I’m sure VZW is looking forward to the overages. What good is fast VZW LTE going to be now if its rushing you over your limit & into higher data prices?

    • http://Website Gee

I’m enjoying my 300 kb/s Sprint “3g” in NYC. Yeah, right. I’d take capped data, at least 4GB though, of good data than my current unlimited data with Sprint.

    • Teardrops2064

SPRINT WILL BE DOING THIS ALSO ,, SO JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE! SPRINT ISNT DOING THIS NOW BECAUSE THEY ARE SMART,, THEY WILL GET EVERY ONE GOING TO THEM FOR THERE UNLIMITED FAMLY SHARE PLAN, THEN WHEN THEY CHANGE THERES YOU ALL WILL BE LIKE ,,,, WOW SPRINT IS DOING THIS TO THEERE UNLIMITED FAMILY SHARE EVERYTHING PLAN NOW TOO,, DONT SAY I DIDNT WORN YOU ALL! ITS GOING TO HAPPEN WAIT AND SEE. IT DONT MATTER WHERE YOU ALL GO NOW ,, BUT SPRINT IS GOING TO BE DOING THIS TOO !

  • http://Website dasudevil

Who says you cant buy a new phone? Just dont buy it under contract. Pay fill price and you should be fine.

    • http://Website InTheory

Actually, I’m going to guess that’s only true in theory. If Verizon is anything like AT&T (which is the direction they seem to be moving in), they give your data plan a label and restrict it to work within a strict guideline.

We have data on two of our lines – one for iPhone and one for Blackberry – and they are not interchangeable. I gave my dad my old iPhone when I upgraded, but when he moved his SIM card into it, they completely locked up his data. In other words, he couldn’t just pay the full contract price for a new phone and still have “unlimited” (yes, 5GB) data. I hope that Verizon isn’t the same, but they really seem to be taking a cue from AT&T stellar playbook for screwing customers over.

We may have to wait until they pull the unlimited data to see what their grandfathering system looks like, but I am really curious nonetheless. In our bill, it denotes the “type of data plan” they provide you.

If I’m wrong, please share, because I really hope I am.

      • http://Website InTheory

        Oops!

        *the full, NON-contract price.

  • http://Website gary bowser

well, greedy Verizon always looking for ways to screw its customers. It will make Boost, Metro, Virgin, etc a much more popular option. Verizon only has customers because it has the best coverage.

    • http://Website ben steel

The “Best” Coverage….what does that mean..? The most area, the best signal, the most people covered, etc…?
It’s people buying their billion dollar marketing campaign (along with a 6 percent stock dividend) are a couple of reasons VZ prices so high and going higher. (I live in NJ, work in NYC, Visit my daughter in LA, and a couple of vacations to CO ski resorts and various places in Florida and my Sprint is always equal to VZ and often beats ATT coverage)
It’s a sad state of affairs that in America in 2011 that there is not a glut of bandwidth…..the price of Mbs should be dropping….for God’s sake, Comcast has practically a monopoly in my area….and I can use 10 gigs a day….what’s next…they going to follow with a tiered program…? Metro PCS came in with nice earning and enrollment and they seem to be making great money at $60 a month half of what VZ is charging. VZ is a nasty greedy company….let me know if there’s any other way to look at it…?
I hope Google buys Sprint or Metro and dishes out wireless at cost, and makes its profit on the advertisers.

Hmm… Upgrade date is this July 6th (after buying the Droid 1 on release day). I wonder if I can get an upgrade to a 4G phone before they do away with it. I always buy and sell phones on ebay anyways, but this way I could get grandfathered into a 4G Android phone.

    • http://Website Steve

You should be able to upgrade now. I bought the OG Droid on launch day as well and I’ve been eligible for an early upgrade for over a month now.

  • http://Website hangman

TThis is crappy they sell unlimited plans make money off of us then get faster and better phones and all of a sudden Verizon wants to limit our use and charge more.looks like when my contract is up moving to a different carrier

  • http://Website HackNet

There’s no such thing as “Unlimited Data.”
4GB cap on most if not all carriers. Read the fine print.

Is that why I average 5-6GB every month?

    • http://Website tony

    • http://Website BRANDON SCHMITZ

No, incorrect. I run 5-6 GB of data every month and pay 29.99 every month.

I pay $25 a month with Virgin Mobile for unlimited data. This is why I am better than all of you.

  • http://www.iphonestorepr.com iphonestorepr.com

So this is very stupid. For why we need hdspa+ or lte if we dont have an unlimited data plan. Really 2gb limit its too low for a user that use facebook, youtube, pandora, netflix ect.

  • http://Website Luke

I will leave vzw for another carrier if this is done and I hope many others do so they can see there must be an unlimited plan

    • Teardrops2064

YOU CAN GO A HEAD AND LEAVE VERIZON, BUT ALLLLLLLLLL CARRIERS ARE GOING TO BE DOING THIS, NOT JUST VERIZON.

aT&T t-MOBILE AND VERIZON ARE DOING THIS, BUT SPRINT ON THE OTHER HAND WONT BE DOING THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE PLAYING THE GAME WITH ALL YOU, SPRINT WILL BE DOING THIS ALSO SOMETIME DOWN THE LINE, THE REASON THEY ARENT DOING THIS IS BECAUSE THEY WANT ALL THE ONES WHO ARE GOING TO DROP THE CARRIER THEY ARE WITH AND GET YOU TO GO TO THEM,, THEN WHEN YOUR IN SPRINT , THAT WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN, THEY WILL BE DOING IT ALSO, SO IT WONT MATTER WHERE YOU ALL GO IT WILL BE ALL DONT THIS WAY, ITS DUE TO ALL THE NEW PHONES AND WHAT THEY ARE PUTTING IN THEM, I TALLKED WIT A VERIZON CHAT PERSON LASTNIGHT AND I TOLD HER, THE SAME THING, IF THEY DO THIS IN JANUARY OF 2013 TO EVERYONE ,, THIS MEANS WE DONT HAVE A UNLIMITED FAMILY PLAN AND WE DONT EVEN HAVE A CONTRACT WITH VERIZON THEN DUE TO VERIZON DOING THIS TO THERE CUSTOMERS, AND SHE TOLD ME THAT ,, THEY ARE DOING THIS FOR THE ONES WHO ARE UP FOR A CONTRACT UPDATE

SO IF YOU HAVE YOUR CONTRACT ENDING HERE SOON,, AND YOU GO IN AND GET IT RENEWED, THIS IS WHEN YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THIS NEW FAMILY UNLIMITED SHARE EVERYTHING PLAN, AND ITS MORE NOW THEN IT WAS!

LIKE I SAID IT WONT MATTER WHERE YOU GO RIGHT NOW, THEY ARE ALL DOING IT, BUT SPRINT ON THE OTHER HAND IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ISNT GOING TO DO THIS, SO WHEN THEY DO , YOU WILL ALL BE BLOGGING ON HOW YOU JUST SWITCHED TO SPRINT AND NOW THEY ARE DOING IT TOOOOO!

  • http://Website Anonymous

Seems like another installment of “Greedy Corporate America” screwing over the people to me!

And the real pathetic thing is, there is nothing we can do about it. We either pay thru the nose for the average/above-average carrier, or pay cheaper for a low average carrier like Cricket.

    • http://Website Anonymous

Then again, I maybe going to Virgin Mobile (Sprint) this summer, getting their $25. unlimited plan with the 300 minutes, then using my “Line 2″ app for use at home. So, for $35. per month, I can get what I need. Or maybe just get the 1200 minutes unlimited plan for the $40. per month.

But even going with Sprint at $79.99 per month for better phones isn’t that bad either. Sure beats the merger/buyout or limited data mess.

  • http://Website Cris

Am i the only one who sees this change as positive. Why is data not charged in a way like we are charged for electricity. My Wife uses very little data, while i use a good bit more. Why am i paying for a full data plan for her? Give the data plans that charge me for the MBs i actually use. Charge me less when i use less, charge me more when i use more. This seems fair with no chance of throttling.

    • http://Website tim

The point is that we should have the option. Yes tiered data is a good thing. But ONLY as an option in addition to/unlimited.

  • http://Website Bob

Verizon will see the error of their ways when their customer base shrinks back to what it was before It got the Razr phone. Why would phone manufacturers even be motivated to develop phones for such a carrier when they know you wont be able to make use of your higher data capacity of 4g LTE without getting nickel and dimed to death. I for one am going to be looking at sprint hardcore and I have been a loyal Verizon customer since 2003. Lesson learned here is you gain nothing by being a loyal customer, In practice if you are a loyal customer you are really motivating buisinesses to treat you like crap. The business models really give preferential treatment to people they percieve a risk of losing. That being said, If the unlimited plan goes away from verizon so will I.

Can’t wait for this to go in to affect the week before the Bionic is finally released. Damn you Murphy. I’ve passed on the TBolt and the pos Charge holding out for a dual-core, front camera, 4G phone and I have no doubt that it’ll hose me getting grandfathered in. Might have to pull the trigger on a TBolt at the last minute I guess…

    • http://Website Willard Potter

I was just thinking the same thing… lol I’ve still got my Droid 1 and i’m itching for the Bionic to be released. You know it’s going to hit a short time after this change is made. Just like they “coincidentally” decided no more ‘New Every 2′ RIGHT around the iPhone release. I’ve still got till 8/28 for my final discounted upgrade. I’m hoping this doesn’t take effect before then and that the Bionic is released in that time too. lol

Either way… I usually don’t hit more than 2GB a month, so hopefully they cap it somewhere around 2GB – 4GB and I’ll still be happy. It’s not a happy situation, to say the least, but it’s doable. I just don’t like that i’ll have to start keeping an eye on data usage regularly. It’s like last year’s change to NJ Transit availability.. They raised fares and STILL cut routes at the same time.

    • Teardrops2064

IT DOES (not) MATTER HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN WITH THE CARRIER!!! DAH!!! IT WILL GO FOR EVERYONE! NO MATTER IF YOU HAVE BEEN WITH VERIZON FOR 50000000000 YRS IT WILL GO FOR EVEY ONE! SPRINT IS GOING TO BE DOING THIS ALSO BUT NOT YET BECAUSE THEY ARE PLAYING THE GAME OF REELLING YOU ALL IN TO THERE STORE , AND WHEN THEY HAVE EVERYONE THAT WANTS TO SWITCH TO SPRING THATSS WHEN THEY WILL BE DOING IT TOO,, ITS BECAUSE OF ALL THE NEW SMART PHONES AND THE CHIPS AND DEVICES THEY ARE PUTTING IN THESE PHONES,

NOW DO YOU SEE MY POINT!

IT DONT MATTER HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN WITH A CARRIER! IT WILL HAPPEN,,,,SOONER THEN LATER!

VZ are greedy pigs who value obscene profit more than anything. They netted 24 billion last year folks. Thats BILLION! Keep paying their obscene prices like little sheep who just follow along, and with their new tiered data plans, they may make 30 billion. Unless you live in the boonies, all four carriers are pretty equal. I will never pay their exhorbitant prices so Ivan can get another Lear jet….

  • http://Website Verizon,At&t sucks eggs

I can’t see why people even waist there time with VERIZON why just to say your on a fast new network that SUCKS AWAYS YOUR BATTERY it doesn’t even matter what device you have. They get that sorry old iphone 4 then start gathering up new customers now you want to change the UNLIMITED DATA what a disgrace VERIZON is. They can take there LTE battery draining network and go suck dog ass and take at&t along with you. Bunch of greedy butt wipes..ANYONE ON VERIZON AND AT&T STINKS bunch of sorry iphone owners on both networks…..

  • http://Website All Carriers are making crazy money

All of the carriers are making crazy money on our plans. Basically everything is the same… almost same speeds, almost same phones, and almost same plans. I use a lot of data, but I completely understand why people would want this… people who use Blackberrys dont even use 1.5gb of data… and people with families of 5 pay about an extra $150 just for data, so the family tiering is a great idea. And if you really use close to 8gb on your cellphone, then you either need a real computer or a real job because there is no need to download a 2gb movie when you have a computer running much faster internet than a 3g/4g phone.

    • http://Website Willard Potter

Not to throw any flame bait out there… but, I work 40+ hours just to share a random basement with someone who loves to make an entrance at 4am on speaker phone while I’m trying to sleep because that’s all I can afford. Some of us choose the plans and services we choose because it’s what we can afford. The Unlimited for $30 is good when it’s all you can afford. I can’t afford cable television, much less an internet service on top of that.

And to counter your ‘all carriers, plans, and services are almost the same’ arguement; That’s like saying red is the same as yellow. While true, they’re both colors, just like they’re all cell phone plans…. I have my near 2 year old Droid 1 with pretty much full or near full reception and data rates a very good majority of the time. My friend, with his brand new Sidekick 4G, sitting right next to me probably spends more time on EDGE than 4G.

It’s all about the area you’re in and the services that appeal to you, not to mention the exclusive devices that you won’t see on every carrier. That being said, my month is almost up at i’ve still only used about 1.5GB, I’ve got a beast of a gaming desktop that I built, luckily, before things went to crap on me, and i’ll take wifi where I can get it. Android has been all about connection, syncing and being in the loop without even thinking about it. We shouldn’t have to debate having to turn off syncing email accounts because that could be that final bit of bandwidth that pushes you over your limit and incurs you more charges.

Oh and before the “real job” thing is able to become a retaliation.. I don’t flip burgers. I work between a receiving dock and preventative maintenance for a Sears, which luckily gets me a bit of a discount on my verizon bill.

Again… not trying to cause drama.. just saying..

  • Uncemister

I guess I’m one of the few who is looking forward to this. We both use so little of data between both of our lines that we would benefit from having a shared family data plan.

    • Josh

What are you looking forward to exactly? You’re still going to be paying $30 a month for data. You’re not saving any money at all. Only difference is NOW you can only use 2GB per month. How in the world could anyone in their right mind think this is a GOOD THING? Now if 2GB of data was $15 a month, then I’d agree with you.

      • Teardrops2064

        $15.00 PER GIGG

1GB IS 15.00 AND ANOTHER IS 15.00 AND SO ON

  • http://Website Bacon hat guy

Here’s a crazy idea…..sell wifi only smart phones! Seriously, how many asshats say “I hardly go over my data cap because I use free public wifi everywhere I go – with a smug look on their face”. Phones now a days are basically PCs with cellular radios anyways right?

No, phones aren’t treated like my electric bill on per use pricing. I don’t get charged a “penality” fee for going over a limit like cell data. If they really cared about customers it would be priced like that instead of tiers. Even when you buy a phone off contract it still doesn’t change the terms of the plans but the fact that your not tied into not buying a phone for two years right?

  • http://Website Marc

I think I have figured it out; Verizon is on a quest to become the most hated company on the planet. Crappy service, tricks and traps to prevent living up to the false expectations they imply, horrible voice sound, horrible data connections, ancient hacked and patched together 3G data network, colluding on gouging customers with rigged pricing, expiring minutes, getting rid of $100 phone credit, and now getting rid of unlimited data?

I guess if you have a horrible name and doubly horrible logo like that you might as well suck!

  • http://Website Ed

They Will throtle you down for 2 billing cycles if your in the top 5% of data users anyway. So as it is it’s not really unlimited. They’ll penalize you for treating it like a real unlimited plan.

so much for life in the cloud. ;)
