HTC EVO 4G is getting a tasty Gingerbread update on June 6th (Update)

At last! The beloved HTC EVO 4G is finally getting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread! Widely categorized as the best Android device of 2010, this little beast can hold its own even against some of the recently released devices. What could make the EVO even better? Of course, an update to the latest Android version, Android 2.3 Gingerbread would help. According to a leaked document, the wait is about to be over, and the Gingerbread OTA update will start rolling out on June 6th.

For the impatient tech-nerds that start checking the settings every 5 minutes, as soon as news about updates hit the web, there is another option. This update will be available as a manual install as of June 3rd, meaning you only have to wait until tomorrow (if you so choose to manually install it).

What comes in this new update (4.22.651.2)?

Enhancements:

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • The downloads application gives the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email, or another application.

Fixes:

  • SMS intermittently sent to wrong and seemingly random contact.
  • “Me” instead of “Yo” in SMS thread conversations when set to spanish.
  • Multiple GMail accounts no longer sync after 2.2 update.
  • Unable to charge a batter that has reached a state of discharge well beyond the low battery/power down threshold.

Leaked Document

Of course, you can also expect the usual benefits of Gingerbread – improved, faster UI experience, native VoIP support, better graphics, and an overall boost in performance.

Rejoice, EVO users, the wait is finally (almost) over. Let’s just hope that this is real, and we don’t end up checking our phones every 10 minutes for no reason. Check out Android Central’s screenshot of the document below for further details on this. As always, we would like to know your opinions – What do you guys think of this update? Satisfied? Do you think HTC/Sprint took too long to release this OTA?

Update:

Sprint has just confirmed this information via Twitter! This is now official, so expect your updates as stated, EVO users!

Special thanks to our reader mikevo for the tip (on the comments section).

I believe sprint took too long to release this update. For, what i believe, is sprints best phone, they should have been a little quicker. Its just to bad we wont be seeing the new sense. That would have really made this phone live up to what its supposed to be.

I must say I’m disappointed with HTC’s delay this time. They seem to pretty fast with whatever are their latest high-end devices at any given time, but anything that came earlier is getting pushed behind way too hard. Last year EVO 4G and Desire were the very first non-Google devices to get Froyo (faster even than the Droid, which supposedly should be easier since it runs stock Android), now it took them quite long for EVO, and they are over a month behind schedule with the Desire.

Its not late. No one has figured out that Google put a hold (my opinion no inside info here) on updating devices. Note that there have been 4 updates to gingerbread. 2.3-2.3.4 and only the DX (2.3.3) and now the Evo will be updated in the US. Remember there was only one update to Froyo. Something was wrong with gingerbread and Google didn’t want other handsets besides the nexus’ having issues. Also new handsets are still coming out w/Froyo. I don’t blame the carriers or manufacturers on this one. I think after the 2.3.3 update Google gave the thumbs up considering it takes about 2 months to dial in an update and 2.3.4 was basically for Google Voice.

While they clearly avoided upgrading devices before 2.3.3 (even the Nexus One), there’s no excuse now.

Also, Froyo did have minor updates, 2.2.1 and 2.2.2. And 2.2.2 got pretty much zero support outside of the Nexus One, which is a real shame since it fixed a security bug in the browser.

Congrats, EVO users. T-Mobile tweeted on April 24th that this upgrade was coming soon to the G2x. Still waiting…

Does anyone know how to update without losing all apps and app data?
I tried a temp root using z4root, that went fine, but titanium backup didn’t recognize the root!

    • mikevo

App list backup. Search it in the market. Fyi it doesn’t save app data. So if you’ve been playing plants v zombies for 10 hours say good bye to your progress.
