Atrix 4G Gingerbread update now available

Atrix 4G users, it’s been a month since we showed you the test build of Android 2.3.4. If you’ve given up on the futility of hitting “system update,” I’m going to ask you to have faith and try it one more time. Your Gingerbread is finally fully baked.

You can read the full release notes here if you want to know exactly what you’re getting yourself into. While there are quite a few nice new features in the update, I think the highlight is the one Motorola chooses not to mention. The option to install from “Unknown sources.” Among other things, this brings the option to use the Amazon App Store (even if it is just for the free app of the day).

If you’re on a WiFi connection, just pull the standard “Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Update” trick that we’re all so fond of. Then download and install the update directly from your phone. If that isn’t working for you, Motorola has you covered. Hit the source link below (or right here) and follow Motorola’s simple instructions on performing the update via your computer. You can download and drop the install file on your SD card. There’s also a fully automated option for PC owners. If you have any problems, just give a shout in comments. We’ll try to help you out.

Let us know how the update goes for you. And be sure to tell us your favorite new feature after you’ve taken Gingerbread for a spin.

My wife and I have been running it since Friday night, and we have no complaints so far. The phone feels faster in just about all respects, and we haven’t had any stability problems. The revamped interface (I don’t know if it’s new Motoblur, or the new non-blur, whatever) is nicer than what it shipped with, but I still found it slower than LauncherPro so we’re both sticking with LauncherPro. App sideloading definitely is working – I was able to get the Amazon marketplace on there and immediately start getting the apps I’d already purchased on my Xoom and other devices.

Really seems like a great job and made the Atrix more of the phone could have been at launch. I’m still curious out the bootloader…I’m seeing some reports that this was supposed to unlock it, and I’m seeing other reports of it updating the bootloader with a new, yet-to-be unlocked version. I don’t much care at the moment honestly, the phone is running great as-is, but eventually I’ll want to start tweaking more.

This update was rumored to allow for the “Fastboot OEM unlock” command, but that didn’t happen. There are threads over on XDA on how to do it at the moment, but I wouldn’t give up on Motorola getting on the right side of this with a future update.

My phone got into infinite reboot loop after I update. Easily fixed with android recovery. I’ve been using it since last friday. The phone is noticeable faster in all aspects, and I’ve noticed some improvement in battery life and camera as well.

I had to flash back to stock from a rooted and webtop modded Atrix. After that went well now just waiting for a root for the OTA update that works.

The update from Froyo to Gingerbread is visually appalling. The white fade on the bottom of the screen looks terrible. The new color scheme is bland. The updated gallery application no longer detected photo’s form other folders.

I would like the Froyo release back. I see nothing to gain from this Gingerbread update.

I’ve been surfing on-line greater than 3 hours lately, but I by no means found any fascinating article like yours. It?s pretty worth sufficient for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content material as you probably did, the net might be a lot more useful than ever before.

I Tried manually installing the software by drag and dropping it onto my micro SD card and then when I go to “search for updates” my phone will search indefinately. If I enable wifi and try to search that way my phone will do the same thing. Any suggestions
