It’s definitely frustrating to see devices rolling out with Android 2.2 Froyo halfway through 2011. Manufacturers are still releasing smartphones with this older version of the Android OS with the promise of upgrading them via an OTA update at a later date. Such was the case with the HTC Droid Incredible 2, released last April, and it seems this Gingerbread update is now ready. Verizon’s support page for the Droid Incredible 2 has a new PDF file for you, and the details are right below.
As you can see in the image, Android 2.3 Gingerbread is not the only thing HTC and Verizon are treating you with. The updated version of Android definitely sounds like the most exciting part of the document, though. But when are 4G devices getting this treat?
As of now, none of the “future-proofed” 4G devices have been updated to Gingerbread. For the sake of fair comparison, we’ll stick with the same manufacturer. The HTC Thunderbolt was released last March, more than a month before the release of the Droid Incredible 2. Aside from all the rumors and leaks (which have been wrong), we still have not seen anything from Verizon about the Thunderbolt’s Gingerbread update. As a device advertised to be more future-proofed and with a price tag that’s $50 higher, this is simply disappointing.
Congratulations to all HTC Droid Incredible 2 users, as it seems this update should be rolling out soon. Stay tuned for more details, and let’s hope more devices start getting Gingerbread soon. We think every (or at least most) 2011 devices should come with Gingerbread. What do you guys say?
