HTC Droid Incredible 2 to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread before “future-proofed” 4G smartphones?

It’s definitely frustrating to see devices rolling out with Android 2.2 Froyo halfway through 2011. Manufacturers are still releasing smartphones with this older version of the Android OS with the promise of upgrading them via an OTA update at a later date. Such was the case with the HTC Droid Incredible 2, released last April, and it seems this Gingerbread update is now ready. Verizon’s support page for the Droid Incredible 2 has a new PDF file for you, and the details are right below.

As you can see in the image, Android 2.3 Gingerbread is not the only thing HTC and Verizon are treating you with. The updated version of Android definitely sounds like the most exciting part of the document, though. But when are 4G devices getting this treat?

As of now, none of the “future-proofed” 4G devices have been updated to Gingerbread. For the sake of fair comparison, we’ll stick with the same manufacturer. The HTC Thunderbolt was released last March, more than a month before the release of the Droid Incredible 2. Aside from all the rumors and leaks (which have been wrong), we still have not seen anything from Verizon about the Thunderbolt’s Gingerbread update. As a device advertised to be more future-proofed and with a price tag that’s $50 higher, this is simply disappointing.

Congratulations to all HTC Droid Incredible 2 users, as it seems this update should be rolling out soon. Stay tuned for more details, and let’s hope more devices start getting Gingerbread soon. We think every (or at least most) 2011 devices should come with Gingerbread. What do you guys say?

Disappointing? Here’s what’s disappointing: YOU didn’t even mention the Original Incredible, which also was released before the Incredible 2 and is still waiting for Gingerbread!

    • Edgar Cervantes

I am sorry, :). I was trying to stick to this year’s 4G devices, just for the sake of comparison. You are definitely right, though. The Droid Incredible 2 is definitely a good device, and one that is still very popular. It definitely has the guts and Gingerbread potential.

HTC/Verizon should also get their act together with this one. For them it is about money, though. They might want you to purchase another device for you to have the “latest and greatest” Android OS version, even though the Droid incredible is still a very good device for being more than a year old!

Kinda like how they said that the Droid 2 Global update to Gingerbread was based upon when the Droid 3 came out? Ridiculous.

Man I’m feeling kinda left out…G2 reached its EOL and hasn’t gotten 2.3.

The sad thing is, the cyanogenmod team, with basically one guy working on it, has managed to put a nicely working version of Gingerbread on the Thunderbird. And he had to reverse engineer the Radio Interface Layer (RIL)! So what’s HTC’s excuse?

    gingerbread is obsolete.

WWhat about the original incredible? We need an upgrade.

I dunno about you.. My Droid Incredible is rocking 2.3.4 quite nicely with CyanogenMod 7… much better than an HTC Sense build no doubt!

        hey Tony,

could you tell me or give me the website that shows how to get that mod?

        • http://Website AC

I believe what you want is a Google search for CyanogenMod, and then I think the current nightlies are built off of 2.3.4 (I don’t think the stable RC is built off of it yet, however)

I’m sure at this point, even you know you should have been banned from this site by now!

Also, this phone doesn’t even look like a HTC phone. It looks like Motorola tried to make a Galaxy S Vibrant (which in itself looks like a giant iPhone w/ Android buttons, I would know as I own it) and then HTC put the famous Droid red shades on it!

Just compare it to one of the greatest looking phones (in my opinion), the HTC Sensation.

why on earth does anyone care about gingerbread? there were definite reasons for wanting 1.6/2.1/2.2, but if you don’t get video chat with 2.3 there is no reason for it

you can get the best feature (the new keyboard) from the market already.

Is it just me or does this phone look like a Samsung Vibrant? I own a Vibrant (wifey is now using it) and the profile, rounded corners, etc, just look exactly like my Vibrant. Can anyone who has seen one in real life tell me if I’m just imagining this or not?

  • http://Website Jamie

Pfft. That’s nothing. I’m still stuck with 2.1.1, after buying a phone that will only update the firmware when connected to a PC.
