Nexus S 4G to receive much needed bugfixes on 7/11

When the Nexus S 4G was released on Sprint a few months ago, the pure Google Experience phone quickly became the phone to have on Sprint. But as several owners of this device were quick to point out, the Nexus S suffered inexplicably from horrid WiMax and WiFi connectivity. When I was personally using this device, I noticed I would have 1/3 bars of WiFi connectivity when I was physically in the same room as my router. Once I upgraded to the Evo 3D, I would notice the Evo getting a strong 4G signal in many places where the Nexus S was stuck on 3G.

Engadget beat me to the punch, however, and very neatly demonstrated the sub-par performance of the Nexus S when compared to the Epic 4G. The results speak for themselves. The Epic 4G bests Google’s current flagship in just about every test Engadget threw at it.

Fortunately for current Nexus S 4G owners, Sprint, Samsung and Google have been hard at work putting together an OTA update to fix these connectivity issues, according to a leaked document from the folks over at Sprintfeed (image in Gallery below). The Nexus S 4G is all set to receive an update on July 11th, bringing all the following goodies:

  • Enabling the NFC Secure Element
  • 4G Settings widget
  • TTY support
  • NI Push Support
  • Improved WiFi connectivity
  • Improved speakerphone audio quality
  • Improved 4G throughput and signal acquisition
  • Tuned signal strength indicators

This much-needed update will roll out over a 4-day period beginning July 11th (through the 14th) and will come via an over-the-air update. It’s nearly time to rejoice, Nexus S 4G owners!  Be sure to stop back and let us know how your update experience goes.

Guess you never had a Samsung Moment

        • DarthSpacegrass

The Samsung Moment was the entry way for a lot of people into the android market (qwerty keyboard). There were issues, but there were no problems that a corporate run sprint store team member couldn’t or wouldn’t resolve. Currently my Moment is still running. I passed it along to my son and while he would prefer to upgrade, it is still a decent working phone.

Since the Nexus is a “google phone”, I believe that updates come straight from Google…. so, it’s Google looking out for it’s customers.

Very good news. Love the phone, but had experienced some data issues for sure.

My wife has the Nexus S, and I have the Evo. Put them next to each other and it’s game over. I have full WiMax coverage, she has 0-1 bar of 4G or is stuck on 3g. Wifi I’ll have 2 or 3 bars where she has 1.

      It’s insane.

      • http://Website Steve

A bit off topic but, I went from the evo 4g to the evo 3d. And I’m not sure if it’s me or what but it seems like the wifi signal on the evo 4g was better. Any experience with that?

“Tuned” bars sounds like what Apple did way back with iOS 2.x.x – overzealous bars that only satisfied bar happy end users. Sprint already tuned the Epic 4G and other Android phones to never show 1X coverage

im waiting for nexus 3 or what ever the next google phone is

  • http://Website snowbdr89

To bad it wont fix that huge bug called the sprint network. @max the nexus 3 is rumored to come with lte an we all know who has lte an who doesn’t!!

    • http://www.anthonydomanico.com Anthony Domanico

Yeah, that LTE rumor is way unconfirmed. Remember, it came in a BGR rumor where he said “It will/won’t be called a Nexus. It will be made by LG or HTC or Motorola. Blah blah blah”

the 3rd NEXUS will call NEXUS PRIME unfortunately it will be from samsung again cause of the screen

Even if sprint changes to lte im pretty sure current phones wont work with lte maybe im wrong

    • http://Website snowbdr89

Oh dick how i was waiting for your useless input!! Im pretty sure any lte will run off a sim card an if thats the case then your evo isnt so future proof haha

I usually respond from my phone so i cant see that creepy fuckers ugly face.

    • thel0nerang3r

so, how are phones that do not have a LTE chipset supposed to work on LTE? Please enlighten us

      • http://Website snowbdr89

From what i understand a sim card is needed for the data side of it so data and voice is not shared thus no bottleneck or drop in speeds.

        • thel0nerang3r

You still need a LTE radio on your phone. To the best of my knowledge there isn’t currently in the market any chipsets that are dual wimax/LTE.

    does it reboot?

  • thel0nerang3r

Maybe I’ve been lucky. I’ve used the “speed test” app on my phone, when at home with “one bar” showing on wifi, I get 4.9Mbits download speed (I have att dsl with “upto 6Mbit” dl). So far, the bars are useless, they don’t mean a thing to my connection. The 4G settings widget is a welcome addition.

i just return my EVO 3D n get the NEXUS S 4G big different, i was just not happy wit the EVO 3d, the phone is fast but freeze a lot the new sense 3.0 is not that serious. within 4 days with the phone i got at least 2 updates that mess up the phone even more. NEXUS are the best android phone u don’t deal the HTC, SAMSUNG (I HATE THE UI), MOTOROLA UI, its a straight google experience.

  • http://Website Jk9786

Wow. LTE is a CDMA network. it does not require a sim card at all. maybe get your facts straight. and once sprint switches its going to support all 3 networks on one tower. boosting coverage to over 85% of america and the virgin islands where sprint currently has service and verizon does not have service at all.

Still waiting on my update, and trying to check manually does nothing for me…

    • http://Website Robert H

Me either. Hopefully someone will post it up as soon as they receive it. I don’t mind doing a manual update if it means I dont have to wait 3 more days.

  • http://Website iloveliveunique

Iits funny because no one mentioned anything about getting the update in these post. I understand its a four day roll out but somebody had to get it on day one. Guess it was false or maybe late tonight.

Just received my update today! it got delayed after the 10th because there was a hard reset glitch. but all is better now, ENJOY!!

Hi both me and my wife got the nexus about 3 weeks ago from Vodafone Australia. Wifi worked perfectly for both of us on our home network. A week ago mine although it would connect to the wifi as before could no longer get access to the internet, the market or update my email. I tried everything I can think of but no luck. My wife’s phone kept working until yesterday 28th July. Then it also gave up with the same problem. Phone calls and 3g data access still works fine. Now I have no idea what to do. Maybe the “fix” fixed the problem but stuffed the phone.By the way i am running Androidversion 2.3.4. Any suggestions welcomed. I have already tried the wifi fixer
