Hack N Mod offers $1500 bounty for HP TouchPad Android port

duck-hunt-bounty

There’s no doubt that the HP TouchPad was the best selling tablet over the weekend. Retailers slashed the price of the webOS tablet down to $99 and $149 as eager consumers snatched them up without hesitation.  Best Buy locations across the country started offering the TouchPad at the discounted price at 5pm on Saturday. Inventory sold out before stores closed on Saturday night.

We’re not exactly sure how many HP TouchPads are now on the market, but we have a feeling it could soon be one of the best selling tablets to run Android.  The TouchDroid Team has already announced their intentions to bring Gingerbread to the HP TouchPad, and now Hack N Mod has joined the party by offering a $1,500 prize for a complete Android port to the device.

In order to secure the entire bounty, the HP TouchPad Android port must include working WiFi, audio, camera and multi-touch capabilities in addition to documentation of the work under an open source license and a user-friendly installation process. While a $1,500 bounty might sound like a good incentive to put your coding hat on, Hack N Mod currently only has $450 secured and is looking for additional sponsors to pick up the remaining $1,050. The chart below should give you a good idea of what’s currently covered and what features need to be enabled to snatch the grand prize.

Are any of you planning to join in on the fun?  The HP TouchPad has some pretty decent hardware and could certainly be a decent Android tablet. How long do you think it’ll take developers to get Android up and running on the HP TouchPad?

Update: Unrelated to bounty, this video just surfaced on YouTube.

Interesting. My current intention is to try using web OS for as long as I can, but would definitely consider a port to Android.

I couldn’t resist the geek hype so I went ahead and snatched one up for mahself. I’m sure it will be a fun weekend project when Android gets ported, which I’m predicting to be somewhere between end of this month and beginning-ish of September (maybe the 10th?) at the very latest.

Im fine with Webos on this until maybe when Ice cream is revealed and someone can get a stable rom on here.. The lack of apps for webos is annoying but hey it was 99 bucks.. How could you go wrong?

Who’s behind the overly dramatic video (ie who is AndroidGuy31)? How is he supposed to have a port of Honeycomb by the 26th?! Taylor mentioned that that was not possible because Google didn’t release the Honeycomb source.

I would pay $1500 to have WebOS ported to an android tablet. I like Android, but WebOS is better.

I know, I know, it doesn’t have a lot of apps, but it will support most of the ones I want to use. I also realize WebOS is not open sourced, but I expect it will be at some point.

I personally think blackberry tablet os would be better on the touchpad (my touchpad is being shipped to my house now:D)

I’d almost offer a $1500 bounty to anyone who can design an eCommerce website that will only take orders up to the capacity of a business’s actual inventory, instead of taking too many orders and cancelling them a day or two later!
