Engadget received a tip about a suppossed Motorola Xoom Family Edition last week. We didn’t make much out of it, but Best Buy has now released an official announcement. The tablet is basically a Xoom with a slightly modified look, some apps for kids and a reduced price.
This tablet will come preloaded with about $40 worth of applications. This includes some basic apps that will help kids and adults share this tablet without worries. The apps included are Zoodles (a browser for kids), Asphalt 6, Sim City Deluxe, MotoPack, MotoPrint and Quick Office Pro HD.
Specs wise, the Motorola Xoom Family Edition is nearly identical to the WiFi-only Xoom many of us have gotten to know very well. Lets take a look:
Motorola Xoom Family Edition Specifications
- Android 3.1 Honeycomb
- 1 GHz dual-core processor
- 10.1-inch HS IPS HD screen display with capacitive multi-touch
- 5MP back camera with flash, with 720p video webcam
- 16 GB built-in memory
- Battery lasts up to 10 hours for video playback and Web browsing
We assume this device will also come with the standard 1 GB of RAM. The Android version is not completely up-to-date, but it should be getting the Android 3.2 treatment sometime soon (like the original Xoom).
Those who want to get their hands on this “family-friendly” tablet can purchase it starting October 16 for $379. The device is exclusively available at Best Buy. The press release does mention that this is a “limited time value price.” The cost might go up later on.
Even with such a price cut, we’re having a hard time choosing it over the $200 Amazon Kindle Fire. The specs in the Xoom might be better, but not twice-the-price better. This is not a bad option if you really want a Honeycomb device, though. Even if you don’t care for a “Family Edition” device, it’s very simple to ignore the pre-installed kiddie apps.
Take a look at the official press release for more details, and hit the comments section to share some opinions. What do you guys think? Is the price too high (especially with the Kindle Fire around)? Would you rather get another affordable tablet?Show Press Release
