Not content to leave HTC as the sole company to confirm they’ll be bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to their current crop of devices, Sony Ericsson has announced via their Facebook page that they intend to bring Android 4.0 to their entire 2011 lineup. The folks at Engadget reached out to Sony Ericsson to confirm the news and received the following response:

Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.Sony Ericsson

No official details were given on the timeline for upgrading. But rest assured that if you own one of Sony’s Xperia devices, you will definitely be upgraded to the latest and greatest version of Android over the next several months.

Between a confirmed upgrade to the latest version of Android for all their 2011 devices and a commitment to openly supporting the modding/development community, Sony Ericsson is quickly becoming one of our favorite Android manufacturers.

We’ll keep you updated once Sony Ericsson provides more details on their upgrade plan. Stay tuned!

I’ve never really liked Sony Ericsson phones for some reason, but this just made them a whole lot more respectable.

SE’s been stepping up their game lately. Their Android phones are well designed and have always looked better than most. Too bad their internal hardware hasn’t been pushing any boundaries. Now that SONY is taking things over completely, things may change a bit.

If they bring the updates too to the Sony S tablet by the end of this year, then I have my self a Christmas gift.

Sounds great! But I do wonder just how long it will take them to get it done

This is a very good move from SE. They’re kind of leading the way here, promising updates for their whole line-ups ahead of time. I wish more manufacturers did that. But SE really needs to get their act together regarding hardware, too. They always seem to use 1 year old processors, like they’re RIM or Nokia. I expect better from a top Android manufacturer. Plus, they need to make all their phones as slim as the Arc (or slimmer). Most of their phones, especially the lower-end ones are still as bulky as they were in 2005. Unacceptable. I do like that they kind of have their own design style, there, though. That’s respectable. But if they really want to be taken seriously by Android customers, they need to up their game in the hardware department, too.

All I Know is I do not remember manufacturers making commitments to upgrade this fast.. This is a good sign. Is this signs of The update alliance?

I hope they are absolutely sure that their 2011 lineup is ICS ready. Wouldnt be the first time we’ve heard promises…

Sony & HTC has good public relations with their customers by announcing details about ice cream sandwhich. Although HTC said they don’t know what devices they will upgrade its still good. Now can the Koreans come out and say something (Samsung & LG)
