And the award for worst product name ever goes to, Xyboard!

xyboard

The pace at which Android devices are released has led to some rather interesting name choices from manufacturers. You can only add “pad,” “tab” and “slate” to so many technology relevant words. But that is by no means an excuse for a name like Xyboard.

Leaked by PocketNow, Motorola and Verizon will be partnering up to sell the Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition under the names Droid Xyboard 10.1 and Droid Xyboard 8.2, respectively. Speculation is that it’s supposed to somehow resemble the word “cyborg,” but never have I ever seen such a terrible name for a product.

The Xoom wasn’t the most successful product. And I’ve heard my fair share of odd pronunciations of the tablet, but I can’t even imagine how Xyboard will be handled. Sure, Verizon and Motorola may want to distance themselves from the Xoom name, but they should have gone in the opposite direction. Picked a name that’s more consumer friendly, and not impossible to decipher.

I may be overreacting here, but just typing Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 doesn’t feel right. What do you guys think, worst product name ever, or worst product name ever?

Considering the hundreds of ridiculous names across the Android platform, I think this fits in just fine…

  • AsakuraZero

could be way worst, yet the tablet is as fugly as its name so meh :P

I’m beginning to think that Motorola is trying to encourage the Google buyout by acting like they clearly can’t run the company on their own.

I’m surprised it has as many vowels as it does. I’d have expected it to be XYBRD, that would be fun to try and sell.

I think it could be way worse, but yeah the tablet isn’t that appealing just by looking at it, and the name wont help. The pun is “funny”, I’ll give them that.

I still think the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is a terrible and extremely long-winded name.

I broke a chuckle when I said “Cyboard…cyborg…” in my head.

You do remember how the name “iPad” was mocked when it was first released, right?

Btw, ;) they were right about that: http://notalwaysright.com/im-having-my-iperiod/14414

The “Xoom” name is already as ridiculous as it is. This just tops it.

My first name is Ironzey, it has a I in front. To me product any product with a little I in front is “the worst product name ever”.

Why don’t they just call it the DROID TAB if it’s going to be a Verizon-oriented tablet? Takes advantage of the marketing effort they’ve already put into the DROID brand.

  • Samar

Surely..is a funny name..lets see how the actual product is when it comes out.

  • Anthropic

Wow that totally is the lamest name they could have picked, it is like someone from Disney created it, so cute and fluffy but hollow and soul less.

  • coryteague

I do agree that this name is bad. why not Xoom 2? I don’t understand the need to change the device name just because it is a “carrier” version instead of wifi only. and XYboard? what does that even mean. CNET calls it the X. Y. board – is that how we say it.
