Google provides a closer look at Android’s 10 billion app downloads

Android Market app facts

The Android Market’s 10 billionth app download has been a hot topic this week. We’ve been talking about all the apps that are on sale to celebrate and which developers are reaping the rewards, but we haven’t really had a chance to take a look at how it all happened. Like what’s the most popular type of app? When is the most popular time to download apps? And which country downloads the most apps anyway?

Google has released a rather good looking infographic that reveals the history of the Android Market. There’s a quite a bit of information in the image, but here’s some of the highlights:

  • The most popular time to download apps is 9PM, on Sunday. Monday at 4AM is the least popular.
  • Apps are downloaded from 190 countries.
  • South Korea has the most downloads per capita. The US is number four.
  • The most downloaded type of app is games, with 25%. Entertainment is second at 12%.

And as for some individual app highlights:

  • 100 million words are translated every week in Google Translate.
  • 12 billion miles have been navigated in Google Maps.
  • 20,000,000,000 keystrokes have been saved by using SwiftKey.
  • 4054 years have been spent playing with Talking Tom.

As you can see, these numbers are impressive to say the least. And the best part is, this is only the beginning. What’s your favorite bit of info shared?

    Now that’s pretty cool!

thats not just cool, it is very impressive.
downloads have sextoupled within a year!

      • latouffe

Im proud to be an Android user!

      • Shane Dumas

With that huge growth in a year it is very nice to see. My question is with the 10 cent downloads in the last few days how much did it grow then. i know I have been buying a lot of them everyday thanks to the low cost. It would be nice to see the numbers in the last few days.

        • Adnoxaei

I wonder if repeat downloads are included from before my account started remembering things…I had two of my Droid Eris and four of the Fascinate due to factory defects and none of my downloads were remembered on those phones. At lest they were partially remembered for my transition to the Driod Bionic and are fully remembered now (another defective phone has me on my second Bionic), but across those first 6 phones I had to download at least 400 apps because of repeats. I have 100 on my current device…anyways, just me wondering…

Oh and I have terrible luck with factory defects, so I’ve stopped holding it against companies. Also, if iFan reads it, yeah Apple failed me multiple times, so they are on my list also. So… Instead I look at how they deal with it. Failed LCDs, Failed lasers, dead fans, misattached processors, faulty wiring, faulty flash memory, faulty chip, can’t read SD cards, 3G radio failure, motor failed in abnormal way, electrical shorting, on and on and on from everyone under the sun. Verizon replaces everything easily and quickly under factory warranty, so I’ve never had too much of a hassle. I’ve also never paid for a warranty because my phones are well cared for…anyways, sorry to throw that rant on there, but it’s been one of those weeks.

Its only going to get better !! this is just the beginning

    • Thomas Biard

I look forward to when they give detailed breakdowns on average prices of top apps, top developers by download count, etc…

      • erikiksaz

Yeah, having good statistics might finally sway some of the developers who have been hesitant to develop for Android.

I’M TALKING ABOUT YOU INFINITY BLADE DEVS.

        • rojach

Infinity blade will never come to android, apple will see to that, it’s their only gaming edge over android. What made me laugh was the excuse of piracy on android????? Jailbreak anyone?

          • erikiksaz

Not gonna lie, I only tend to play games for less than an hour before I get bored. But, seeing apple lose it’s stronghold over apple app/game developers just makes my day, hah.

    • stenzor

I can’t wait until the Android Market overtakes the iOS App Store in downloads… It’s going to be a glorious day

glad to be part of the swift X statistic it saves me about 30% of my strokes!, gotta love android and the way they publish things sometimes, they have to extend it more, …

    • Futureboy

Yeah, I love that there have been 20,000,000,000. That’s a massive number considering how few keys I actually need to press in a day!

Apple’s app downloads are at about 16 billion, Android at 10 billion and growing at an ever increasing rate, Android will boast the most downloads next year , surely time for you Devs to concentrate more on Android, this is where the party’s at!!!!!!

  • kwills88

I love our android logo Andy…kinda gives android it’s own personality…you can dress an apple with an hat, but that’ll just look stupid.

  • zyphbear

This is a pretty cool infographic!

I will say I’m surprised that the US was only number 4 in the list, I would have thought with the amount of time the US had android that we would have gotten higher, but it’s also adoption rate too.

  • Bryan Stoner

This chart is amazing!!! 1 Billion to 10 billion downloads in such a small time frame. Hell yea Android!!! XDD

  • James Conley

I’m really glad to see the incline in the app store. I still remember when Ken Magic’s solitaire was one of the higher quality apps on android.
