Google Currents now live in the Android Market

A little over a month ago we told you that Google Currents, Google’s Flipboard competitor, was coming soon. Though most of us were expecting Google Currents to launch tomorrow, Google Currents has been pushed to the Android Market a bit early, and is now available for all who want to give the service a try, if you live in the U.S.

Google Currents is an application that allows you to consume various types of content in an interactive and social way. The service takes online news sources, magazines, RSS feeds, and social networks and presents it in a visually appealing way for you to consume and share with your friends and followers.

We’ll bring you a more thorough look at Google Currents as we’ve had time to test out and digest the new application. For now, we highly recommend that you give it a go yourselves by heading over to the Android Market and downloading Google Currents. Or, you can read up on Google Currents on the Google Mobile Blog.

Rub it in why don’t you! :p

    • the5thdimension

I don’t know who you are, but I’m extremely jealous of you right now!

    • AndyNguyen36

      How the..? Lucky guy..

  • Graham Macphee

Does anyone have an apk for us non-US folks?

Going to head over and check it out.. First thing is to add is ANdroidandme !

    • http://None Javier Bastardo

Haha you really are a fanatic. Is really a great blog and I’m very much grateful for it.

  • Anil

Can you guys please extract APK and post here so that those living outside US can try it ASAP ?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Nickedynick

I really wish this was available in the UK.

You can go for the APK of the app so you can use it on your country, Or, you can wait patiently until it becomes available at the market worldwide.

  • lawrenceh

Havens downloaded it just yet. Is this any better than ChannelsPro which i am totally in love with.

  • Clark Wimberly

Dang, I wonder what the folks at places like Feedly, Taptu, and Pulse are thinking right now.

    • BiGMERF

      I just deleted Pulse..LMAO

      • Clark Wimberly

      • OutofPlace

Aside from a few nitpicky complaints with pulse I’m pretty happy with it. That being said, I’ll give this a try and if it’s better dump pulse in a heartbeat!

      • danyR

And that will make two of us. Currents just offers a way more enriching and immersive interface. UI always win, always (because speaking of features, it’s a draw).

      • RRR

        Google always do this way.

    • ben dover

While they are both news reader apps, currents feels way different than pulse.

I still prefer pulse but I’m going to use currents for a while and see how I like it.

    • RRR

This is Google way of doing business

  • Dragonithe

So it’s a glorifief google reader?

  • itzxdjx

Uh a suggest everyone download it now i didn’t think it would hold a candle to flipboard but i was wrong im loving it so far!

  • itzxdjx

Uh I suggest everyone download it now I didn’t think it would hold a candle to flipboard but I was wrong im loving it so far!

  • james bricknell

Really US only? ? REALLY? What a lot of shit.

    • stenzor
      • james bricknell

i actually got the apk off of XDA god bless em. Thats not the issue. It’s the lack of international support. i can understand it with music (sort of) because of copyright law but with a reader?

        no reason.

        • Anthony E

Yeah, I can’t see a reason for blocking it either. Maybe they wanted to limit the test audience, but c’mon; if you want to be a global company you can’t play favourites!

      • Fabio R

you have to root for that

    • JLix

Didn’t we already have this conversation about the US and why they should be given everything first? What product does Western Europe honestly give the rest of the world? I don’t remember ever turning over an item and saying, made in Europe.

I might have some Steins or some old cutlery, or maybe some old coins, but nothing is made or produced there that benefits the rest of mankind, and if it is, you can almost guarantee it was invented here or asia.

Everything should start out US only just to make up for all the money that we lose protecting your sorry asses or feeding 1/2 the world.

And BiGMERF still hates your face!

      • james bricknell

        hahahahahahahaha i love you man.

come and give me a big kiss you wonderful troll you.

        muah x

      • james bricknell

oh and by the way europe gave you.

        the telephone
        the world wide web
        Theory of relativity
All the chemical elements bar 4

i could go on but i dont want to..

        • BiGMERF

I woudnt say they gave us our country.. We took it.. then conquered the rest of the land from people that were here already.LOL

I do still HATE HIS FACE!! But its best HATE YOUR FACE POSSIBLE !

Common guys.. I think we can all agree that everything Google should launch at the same time, worldwide! This way google will get the best exposure possible

          • james bricknell

i really only say the country thing to wind him up.

and what i mean by we gave you it is that you were british colonist’s.

you are of course your own country free and clear.

i’m right about the rest though :D

        • Futureboy

Don’t forget you gave us Spotify, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.

        • JLix

Alexander Graham Bell – Not Europe

Television was being developed in both countries at the same time and the US had the first broadcast of TV a full year before Europe

          I will give you radio.

You have railroads although I might battle that it was not in your country, but I wil let you claim 10 or 12 countries for Europe if you would like where I am only compaing the great United States.

Obviously Al Gore invented the internet, so not Europe.

Our language, ha, you ain’t got nothin on us yo!

Our Country? Well, I think we already know what happened to YOU in regards to that. Kicked your ass.

But, what is comical is that your list is of things that are anywhere from 60 to 300 years old. Is that all you got? Really? You are hanging on to radio and railroads?

The advancement of the American people and what we do for the World as a whole in the last 200 years can’t be touched by Europe.

So looks like everything you have mentioned here is at least 70 years old. Really? That’s all you got? So you are sitting on

          • keridel

al gore invented the internet really?? no.

the world wide web was invented in CERN in switzerland
Alexander graham bell was british (thats in europe by the way)
George stephenson invented the locomotive steam engine (thats railway)

please tell me what you colonials have invented for us?

      • flip3547

Most of the time, when I turn something over, I find “Made in China”!

  • djnumarv

wow it show i was the 4th person to download on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks great……

  • Ben Rollier

Awesome app. Runs really smoothly and is visually stunning. If they add Read/Unread markers and folders functionality (like Reader) it would be perfect.

  • GrendelJapan

Looks quite nice. Could be a nice replacement for Reader.

  • lawrenceh

Yeah now that i have downloaded this. It is pretty sweet. Channels pro with a more grown up feel. Now i want an android tablet. Maybe AndroidandMe can hook me up in the giveaway.

  • Dan Jones

It’s nice, but not great GReader integration. I’d like it to automatically import my GReader feeds, with their folders. That would make it great, and a perfect NewsRob replacement for me.

All in all, though, it feels like feedly with offline support.

  • Diaeko

    my device isnt supportet :(

  • Jon Shiflett

twitter, facebook, G+, now this? how many more ways do I need to find out the GalaxyNexus is getting pushed back?

    • keridel

      Oh snap!

  • Kenneth Ohonba

Yeah only on the android web market cause it’s not yet showing up on anything from Google Inc.

  • Shadowlore

I’ve honestly commented enough to friends about FlipBoard on the wife’s iPad to the point I’ve been jealous.

Good to have something similar available to use now.

The ONLY complaint I have about FlipBoard (and hopefully currents doesn’t suffer from it) is lack of timely updates occasionally. Sometimes Flipboard takes 2-3 hours to update (even with a forced refresh).

  • zyphbear

I’m so glad they are offering this kind of app, it can really help replace using a newspaper.

  • Hall Lo

Why US only :( the ui looks really well designed and neat… and i love offline support ;)
hope its coming to canada soon (or can someone extract the apk :D?)

  • Jeremiah Akin

It’s pretty nice. I can’t get all the feeds I have in Google Reader to show up in Currents yet. The initial sync takes forever, but it seems to be pretty fast after that. It’s not quite as smooth as flipboard, but flipboard has been out for a while now. I would bet on Currents passing up flipboard in features and functionality before long.

  • Shadowlore

Hmm.. anyone got this to work on CM7 yet? I load up Currents on my DX, and all I get is the option to add another account to the phone. (like going into ‘accounts’ via settings)

    • RRR

Thanks for positing. Same on Samsuck Vibrant

  • BlkSquad

    I’ll give it a shot.

  • Cyanimint

The APK is available here, on xda-developers!

  • kwills88

I just checked out the tech and science section but they didn’t have androidandme as a choice…but my pulse has androidandme and it’s my widget, so I basically will be keeping pulse for that reason over this.

    • Jeremiah Akin

I got androidandme added to currents – and it looks great. Just search for “androidandme” and select the feed.

  • ArticulateFool

This just replaced pulse for me.

  • Kenneth Ohonba

Why are some people getting a subscription notification? Is this something we eventually have to pay for to use?

  • Homncruse

I haven’t used the app, only watched the video, but this seems like a mobile version of the defunct Google Wave.

    Maybe I’m missing the point.

    • Homncruse

Owie, these downvotes hurt… :( It was a legitimate statement! I wasn’t trying to troll.

      *cries in a corner*

  • sylar

Well this is definitely something that I need to try out. This sight will be added for sure. I wonder how long it will be before Google runs our live and has an app for everything.

  • James Conley

Wonder how this goes on the nook.

  • Jamie

    ** For US residents
Kinda hate seeing that tag on 90% of new Google products

  • Alexis Piraina

    Wish it works in France…

    • phacyde

It work in France, just download the apk directly. You can add french feed from your google reader account too.
      Very neat app.

  • ffff00

I’m really excited to try this out, just dl’d. I hope the Reader implementation is good.

  • Oscar Ortega

Im going to try it and see if i dump pulse.

  • goncalossilva

What a great looking app. This focus on design and UX by Google is filled with awesomeness. This app is simply great!

  • khenie

Man i love google made the chnge bd dont regretted… google keeps coming out with new thinks wether it works or not they are great ideas… something that other ppl… like u know who lacks in doing they prefer to stick with the same old boring idea

  • khenie

…Lol disregard the misspells! I was to excited…. this is what happens when u rush urself .. i just wanted to go over the market to download google currents :-)

  • Louis Atu

This actually is a good app!!

  • Lee Swanson

I loaded it and I’m trying it out

  • Ilyse Rose

Definitely going to be trying this out, it seems like all of Googles other great ideas, a little difficult to get the hang of at first for me, but totally worth it and awesome after some messing around.

  • jimtravis

Gave Currents a try on the Galaxy Player with 5″ screen. Can’t wait to try on tablet with the even larger screen since it looks so nice on the 5″ screen. Definitely liking the 5″ screen format, and can’t wait for Note to be available in US.

  • AvantGuard

That apk won’t sideload onto the Kindle Fire. Just an FYI. :(

  • aranea

    Looks stunning!

  • humidity

OMG! I can’t wait to use this! Goodbye Flipboard, hello Currents!

  • smisa27

I just tried this, and it’s an awesome app! I love the interface and how clean it is. I am definitely liking this new Google look! Now to get a tablet to enjoy the sexiness even bigger!

  • donger

Throughout the whole video I was more interested in the Galaxy Nexus. Looks good.

  • ramenchef

The interface is really nice. If only they could do something like this for the google reader app as well.

  • jenskristian

I really like it. The UI is amazing, but have to wait and see if I end up using it. I really want to want to use it though!

  • behzadbayat

Love this app, thanks to folks in xda who made it available for guys out of US.

  • mclarensr

    Downloaded, liking it so far.

  • Panatella

Going to have to take the detour on this one, im non-US but i have feeling this will suit my needs!

  • Stella

I downloaded it a few hours ago to give it a test run. So far, I love it. I haven’t had a issue. It’s a gorgeous interface and easy to use. It takes viewing the web and my rss feed to the next level.

  • Parris Payden

I am Currently us Currents… Love the UI but it is SUPER SLOW right now. Hopefully this get’s ironed out soon.

    • Parris Payden

      *Currently USING Currents…

  • Joseph Banks

my phone will probably have a stroke when i use it (Droid OG) but i’ll give it a try. definitely need to upgrade…hurry up Nexus

  • ranwanimator

I was always attracted to Flipbook and I loves me some free alternatives. I’ll just ignore Google’s incessant mining of my data. Now I just need a tablet on which to run it. Come ON 25 Days of Tegra contest. Don’t fail me now!

  • brixred

ME LIKES!!! Might even get rid of Pulse.

  • raminscc

I’ve been using it and I love it. Few changes i’d like made, but nothing major.
One of em is inverted background (black). At least the option to do so.

  • Jason Hernandez

I’m digging Currents a lot. Pulse is still nice, but like many others have said, having another option is way nice.

  • EwanRGR

Big advantage (to me) is that this gives me the 500px client I have been hoping for – at least enough of the functionality that I’m no longer tempted to put down my Streak 7 and pick up my old iPad :-)

  • masterpfa

Working and looking great on my Galaxy Nexus in the good old UK

  • megatec45

    Nice app, easy to use

  • Dan13

Just got it, and lovin’ it!

  • Chris Lewis

This wil be replacing Pulse on my app list. the interface looks sweet!

  • lufy0000

too bad, for some reason, i can’t even find google currents on the market, and i live in Canada

  • Maurizio Bonelli

uff, trying marketenabler to let it work.. btw it is a bit disappointing to wait to have it work in europe!

  • Granna

Well I was so waiting for this!
I think it was called Propeller at first!

  • Granna

Well it seems that it is not available for Europe.

  • Engji

  • Lolaa

    NIce app!

  • Tom Murphy

    Loving it!

  • azswift

It has a great feel on my tiny phone screen, and caching the whole current is great for saving mobile bandwidth.

  • Santana

    Very nice

  • pjamies

Ya .. it would be nice, if Google opened it up to the rest of the world !! but it seems
the US are the only users of this service so far !! :(

  • Alexandra Sedlack

downloaded this already! Love it, good job!

  • Ivan Todorov

It’s looking nice. Great competition to other online magazines.

  • Peter Dowling

Am I the only one running CM7 who has experienced screen black outs after installing this app?

  • mellanhead

I am going to have to try this out. It looks sweet

  • _AjD

I’ll be honest on my phone this app is only so so, as compared to the existing mobile sites. Maybe better suited to that tablet I still haven’t purchased

  • smwinn7

i don’t know if i’m ready ti replace reader with currents yet it’s as bugfree as i wish it was, yet

  • PiTTDRoiD

    Sniffff.sniff………only y USA Market….it is UNFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIR!!!

  • sgumer

i have to check this out. it looks really cool and very functional.
