Latest Facebook for Android update focuses on speed

Today Facebook announced a major update for their Android app that focuses on speed. Photos and albums will be 2x faster, notifications will be highlighted up top, and the menu options have been moved to the right side of the screen. We haven’t seen the update available on the Android Market yet, but Facebook says it will be available soon, so be on the lookout.

Highlights of the new Facebook for Android include:

  • Photos get better:  Photos and albums are up to two times faster than the previous Android app. It’s also easier to share photos, view comments and edit captions on the go.
  • Messages on top:  Your messages and notifications are now at the top of your screen. You can respond to friends and stay updated without leaving the page you’re on.
  • Menu on the side:  You can quickly access your News Feed, Groups, games and apps from the new left-hand menu. The features you use most are now at your fingertips.

After you download and install the new update, let us know what you think of the changes. Can you notice a big improvement in speed? What do you think of the interesting side menu?

    This actually looks quite nice.

Hopefully it’ll fix the odd bugs that the current version has with Android 4.

    • james bricknell

thats what i’m hoping. having a nav menu would be nice. using the people api and intergrating that would be better

      • BiGMERF

        Luckily we have friendcaster

        • Jason Hernandez

Agreed. Do you have the purchased version?

          • BiGMERF

No I do not.. If official Facebook takes any longer Im going o have too get it

        • AvantGuard

I use it on Kindle Fire, and it’s buggy as hell. I’d consider buying Premium, but it’s still so darn error-prone. Why do YOU like it? :)

    • mr 1338

i hope, it adds the missing contact synch for Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 Contacts

      • zyphbear

I agree, and also making the app much smaller too.

    • latouffe

Weird but i dont see any update. I have still the old facebook apps.

    • shandy lover

Does the update have chat as usual??

  • stenzor

Looks much better! The side menu is the same as the one in iOS right?

    • james bricknell

      yeah and on m.facebook

      • stenzor

Ooh, I have never visited m.facebook so I wasn’t aware of that. It’s nice that they are finally being consistent with their design choices

      • Emil

        You mean touch.facebook

    • desean

Yes, this update was done for iOS a while ago. Took them long enough to update the Android app to the same.

  • WarDrake

Does it FINALLY work for contact sync in ICS is what i want to know…

    • BiGMERF

no it doesnt but friendcaster works fine with sync and it odes high re photos

    • ToonPanda

Same comment really. Go for Friendcaster, it does a great job, also on syncing contact pics. :)

  • YellowDucati

Hopefully there is a fix for the commenting on pictures issue.

  • Bryan Stoner

    Whoa that looks nice~

  • Shay D. Life

Looks great…emphasis on the word “looks”. FB for android has been a failure for so long, now they talk about speed. It’s so easy to say something is fast when your beta team is maybe 10 people sharing these features. Nothing is definite until everyone has it and bandwidth is being stretched. Here’s to hoping.

  • YMS123

At the time of posting, the Facebook app has a user rating of 3.6, plenty of room for improvement

  • psipher

Even though I use TweetDeck for most of my Facebook interactions, this looks like a nice and much needed update.

  • Steve Heinrich

I look forward to downloading this when it is released. I tend to get giddy when app developers update an interface. Plus some bug fixes are always good.

  • Hall Lo

Oh it looks sweet :) well b4 speed improvement i hope it does fix the notification problem first

  • Lewis McGeary

How has the Facebook app been recently? I uninstalled it a while ago in favour of the mobile web interface instead, as each update seemed to get worse!

    • Klaus

The mobile web version is currently infinitely better than the app. Has been for a long time.

      • Lewis McGeary

Yeah, may try out the latest version then uninstall again if it’s still bad.

  • Danerisms

People still use Facebook? I thought Google+ was going to kill it? :-)

    • Alex

I’ll switch as soon as the age limit is removed! I mean, I’m only one year too young, why can’t you just let me join Google?

    • Shadowlore

Stuck using facebook until the witless friends of mine actually MOVE to G+.

But I mean.. heck.. on G+.. how in the world are they going to know when it’s time to water and feed their crops!?!?!?!? OH THE HUMANITY!!! ;)

  • Patricio Acuña

the new app its way nicer than before and easier to navigate on it, the earlier versions sucked tbh

  • ariesness

Love the changes they’ve made to the UI, but I’d like to try it out myself to see if it’s really easier to use. Never really noticed a speed issue with the Facebook app before, but again, I’ll find out once the update is available :)

  • calihawki

    FB App still sucks…

  • artesea

If the app turns out to be the same as the mobile site where you are forced to have “recommended” stuff which you’ve already read at the top then it’s going to be a disappointment.

  • Dlux

Quite glad the photos load faster. That was my biggest peeve of the app.

  • danyR

Finally! Couldn’t bear that clumsy UI anymore, the more the incredibly slow loading times. Still sad this comes a month later after the iOS app refresh…

  • JH

Will I be able to sync facebook contacts on my Nexus S?

    • falgun shah

I dont that facebook has anything to do with it.. it is google who controls it…

  • philippegee

Looks really nice but I wish they would focus on less battery drain. I don’t need push notifications for something like Facebook and each time I have it installed I see a huge hit in battery life. Hopefully this helps a bit so I can reinstall.

  • jenskristian

Looks good. An update was desperately needed.

  • Kevin Amundson

Oh good. Speed updates are always nice, especially in apps we use multiple times a day.

  • Diaeko

I was about to uninstall the FB app :P
    but now i will update!!^^

  • g

Every single fb app for android is terrible. The official one is the worst offender. I was using friendcaster for a while but realized it was omitting tons of updates. Even to the point where I would go to someones profile and not see anything. I’m sure the official one will still suck. It sure would be nice if android got its shit together after three years.

    • Brent

This is because of the privacy settings of your friends. If they don’t allow third party apps to access their information, you can’t see it with Friendcaster.

  • Rob Vermeij

Hmm downloading now but very sceptic. The facebook app is not always a joy to use, to say the least :P

  • cvt2002

  • jkisha

I just hope it added the ability to share friends posts.

  • ArticulateFool

The app is definitely lacking. I hope they pay more attention to their android app in the future.

  • Greg Svo

Won’t faster hardware fix this in the future?

  • Fabio Rojas

A change in the right direction

  • behzadbayat

Really looking into this.the current Facebook app really sucks on my tablet.

  • Sean the Electrofreak

    Need… more… Jiggawatts!

  • J-Man

Can’t wait and see whether my Facebook will keep on being terrible or would actually be usable!

  • donger

    looking good.

  • ToonPanda

    Friendcaster. Nuff said.

  • Jamie

    Nice. Faster = Better

  • goncalossilva

Hum… judging by the screenshots, maybe it’s time to install their app again :)

  • Anthony Massingham

Is this an 4.0 only update? Or is it still just rolling out to the market? My Samsung GS2 hasn’t got the update yet.

  • sylar

Looks nice but I wont be using it as I don’t have a Facebook.

  • jamorenom

I dont have the update yet…

  • humidity

Hopefully this one won’t have as many bugs as the previous versions. Bugs are the reason I haven’t updated in a while…

  • rubik

Haven’t used the crappy facebook app in a while and don’t miss it.

Take a look at the ‘Tinfoil for Facebook’ app ( Yes, it’s just a fancy wrapper for the mobile site but it works well.

  • Nathan D.

  • Michael Ian

Looks great, what about tablets facebook?

  • phaet2112

    seismic still works nice…

  • Andy

But will it still hijack your phone’s contacts and send them to Facebook?

  • RayMatthew

    Any ETA on the update?

  • falgun shah

Is the update already out for anybody ?

    • Jeremy Johns

      It’s live

  • Ilyse Rose

Until someone can tell me this update fixes that GPS polling bug I’m sticking to Friendcaster.

  • Oscar Ortega

will it be worth it? we will have to Wait and see.

  • Richard Pawley

Had to manually install this one – didn’t even recognise it had an update on my Atrix running CM7.

Not sure if it’s just perception, but feels a lot faster loading the news feed – might not need to use the touch mobile site that much anymore.

  • ffff00

Still no update showing here. Maybe FB will actually be usable after this.

  • Luis Lopez

damn… i just updated my fb and it keeps force closing… wait nvm… it just worked as i was writing this. and its giving me a little tour. how nice.

  • Jeremy Johns

Update is live and I’m loving it. Photo view options are huge improvement.

  • Tom Szoldatits

Still doesn’t look that great on tablets. You would think they have done some work on the UI for tablets.

  • redraider133

Updated about an hour ago and the UI change is a welcome addition. Hopefully they fixed the bugs in previous versions of the app.

  • Alec Waddelow

This is excellent. I love the new user interface. Photos do load a little bit faster on my dual core now also.

  • Ben Marvin

Too little too late, I’m over Facebook

  • antfelici

Who even uses FB? It’s all about Google+. Circle me at

  • mau003

Finally! I still have to check it for a couple of days how much is the increase of smoothness, but I hope that the speed increase will finally let me use facebook app and not the browser mobile version.. that was annoying.

  • xfaith

New interface looks good, just the other day I was on an Ipad and saw the FB app there, and was wondering when it would come to android. have not had much time to really play with it. Im on ICS and along with other notice it still does not sync.

  • Glenn Falvey

    I’m all about speed

  • Chazzers

FINALLY. I think we’ve all been waiting for an update like this. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve resorted to using the mobile web version because the native one is so heinously slow. This was a much-needed improvement.

  • eioous

This app is finally getting better. About time too!!!

  • Soharang

FB is mentioning about mobile timeline function but I couldn’t see it yet.
I want to use timeline function like on the desktop.

  • Six8Six

From a UI stand point, it looks good. How it performs in real life? Not bad the one time I used it… Will need a few days use before I can comment more on it

  • Sean BillyMaysHere

    much much bettermuch better

  • Darknight42020

FB is starting to put all that spare change they have into deving a better app? Nah, don’t believe the hype…lol They seem to always be playing catch-up lately. Compitition does a company good doesn’t it? Glad to hear it. Let’s hope they keep progressing so Google+ has a reason to keep strutting their stuff and do the same. Both will benifit from it.

  • artesea

Well it’s out, better than before, styled like and at least you can filter for just Status Updates showing recent events. Only wish now was for Facebook to show me all the updates for everyone I follow, and not those it thinks I might want to read.

  • Phil Frost

    Just sits there loading…………

  • lekky

It’s better for sure, i find those popups ugly though…

    • shandy lover

Does the update have chat as usual?

  • shandy lover

Does the update have chat as usual??anyone??

  • mikesuds

This update is quite solid. It’s looking a lot lot lot better than before. Time will tell how the functionality has improved but at a quick glance Im digging it.

  • Mike Hanel

best update so far! Facebook is finally taking their Android app serious :P

  • BigCiX

Same interface as the mobile website.

  • Jason Toering

About damn time. The current app is almost uselessly slow.

  • technophics

Nice!! An Android user since 4 months and I visited your site today. What a shame for me..:D!!

  • http://None Javier Bastardo

About time really, cool update, I do find it it to be a little faster on my phone, and for the rest is just looks good and it was a necessary update that took to long to come.

  • Lee Swanson

I haven’t been impressed with Facebook changes in general, I always feel I have to live through it and adjust.

  • Cajj

The updates are pretty nice… makes me wish I was a little more into facebook… oh well back to G+

  • cristian donose

Finally the app works as it should from the begining, dont know took them that long to do ir.

  • Diego

It looks a lot like their web app… Going to use the web app for now; I don’t want to grant them access to my phone number and contacts :-)

  • smisa27

I’m actually liking the new Facebook app! I think I actually might end up using it a bit more now. I love the interface and the UI changes. It’s sleek and clean. Nice job!

  • pmex83

Wish Google plus would step up
