Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto III now live on Android Market

grand-theft-auto-iii

As promised, Rockstar Games just released Grand Theft Auto III to the Android Market. If you consider yourself of high maturity and have $4.99 laying around, I would suggest buying this game right now now. GTA3 first debuted on the Playstation 2 around 10 years ago, and it’s one of my all time favorite games.

I dumped a ton of hours into the original when I was a teenager, so I went and purchased it when it came out at midnight. I’ve only played it about one hour, but it has already exceeded my expectations. The game looks better than I remember, it runs smoothly on my Tegra 2 tablet, the touch controls work great, and I’m loving getting to know all the characters again.

Official gamepad support was included, but I didn’t get to test that out yet. I believe it works just fine with Xbox 360 controllers, and I’m crossing my fingers it works with our Logitech USB controller.

Features of GTA3 for Android include:

  • Visually stunning updated graphics, character and vehicle models
  • HD quality resolution
  • Gameplay optimized for touch screen devices
  • Custom controls for the mobile platform
  • Countless hours of gameplay
  • Gamepad Support for select USB controllers

Rockstar Games supported most of the newer high-end devices and they are promising to add more soon. The Galaxy Nexus should be the next device up and running, and we should also see it on the Transformer Prime, since we know they’re working on a Tegra 3 version.

The game is full of adult themes, so remember parents that you can change content filter settings and block your kids from downloading it.

Overall, I’m really pleased with Rockstar’s first Android effort, and I look forward to their next release. It’s been reported that a Max Payne remake is in the works, but we have yet to receive any real details.

After you grab the game and check it out, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Look for Grand Theft Auto III on the following devices:

  • Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x, [Galaxy Nexus coming soon]
  • Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

Plays quite well on my Sensation. I’m actually surprised. We’re usually left out of big/new market releases.

    • robkoehler

    • charliethesuperturtle

It gives me hope it will work on my touchpad.

      • Bob A

        • Joel Bird

You’ll find that the majority of recent phones can actually play the game – you just have to side load!

    • twugd

Yep, and works on a Galaxy S as well. Awesomeness revisited. This is one of the few games that changed the gaming industry standards forever. Nearly unlimited landscape, infinite number of things to do, over 30 hours of game play and you will still not get bored.
I say, bring on the other GTA series to Android as well!!!

The only thing I want to know is… Are there burning barrels that I can knock over onto people on the streets?

  • ramenchef

Awesome. This is pretty nostalgic from when I played GTA3 back in high school. Great game. Hopefully the controls are intuitive on this port.

    • 4n1m4l

The controls work very well. I had to switch it to analog steering, but its very nice.

    • mmmark111

    • mmmark111

Nope. It’s working on my 1 Ghz Virgin Mobile Motorola Triumph flawlessly.

Really? I have my Triumph OC’d to 1.6 Ghz for gaming, I thought it wouldn’t work, thanks!

  • Dboy352

Can’t find a Motorola Photon compatible version. Checked on my phones market and the market online :( Hopefully it will show up soon.

  • albabarn

I’ll be downloading this onto my tab 10.1 in afternoon, if I get it just now there is no chance of any work happening today.
Every now and again I wander past the Rockstar North offices in Edinburgh and wonder what new and wonderful games they are inventing, now we know!

  • David

Warning :) it lets you download it on the Galaxy Nexus but it FCs with a black screen when you try open it. It does say coming soon to Galaxy Nexus though I guess.

man i love this game and cant wait to try it out.

  • Jordan

It won’t install on my asus transformer– Might be worth taking that off the list, no idea why it doesn’t work :(

Love GTA3 too, hopefully I can get it on here soon…

    • Jordan

^It says its “not compatible with any of my devices” from the online market, and doesn’t turn up in searches on the market from the actual tablet just to clarify… I’m in Australia- Could it be a licensing issue? Any transformer users got it working?

  • Jimmy13

Man this would be so fun. I don’t think the og nook will hang though :p

  • thechad

    looks like a cool game

  • http://www.infotainmentempire.com pekosROB

It is coming up for me to download on my Droid3. I think I will hold off until my Transformer Prime comes in (whenever that is) and it’s available forTegra 3 devices.

Are cell phones realaly as advanced as a PS2 now? Wow.

  • Rob Vermeij

One of the greatest PC games on my android phone…… WOW!!!

  • Kaote

Will have to check this out. GTA III was one of my favorite stress reliever games.

  • MrMrMan

Nice to have a old goodie to play. But I really can’t see playing this on a touch screen.

  • MrMrMan

How big a download is this?

  • bolski

So PLEASE explain to me how this is supposed to be for Tegra devices, yet it’s NOT compatible (per Android Market) with my Droid X2 (dual-core Tegra 2) YET it’s compatible with my LG Vortex (an ARM6, single-core, 500mhz, non-Tegra device)????????

    Makes absolutely no sense.

  • Louis A

Sweet, when I pick up my Galaxy nexus later today, I will start looking for games like this to enjoy it on.

  • http://midweststitch.com ajonrichards

Is it groundbreaking that a groundbreaking game released 10 years ago on a groundbreaking console is now available to play on mid-range devices? Whether it is or not, this is still cool news!

  • Gazos

Well its there for the Desire HD this may have to be my first android purchase!!

    Long Live Android

    • husain

have you downloaded it for your HTC DESIRE HD. Android market says it is incompatable with mine.

  • Nathan D.

want it to bad I don’t have a device that support it.

  • drauks

Luckily I got my Tegra device from Android and Me just in time for this release, Been waiting for GTA!

  • breinhar

All the comments above perfectly illustrate the fragmentation of android devices. People don’t know if it will or won’t work on their phones. I like android for some things and iOS for others but having such hardware fragmentation is annoying but not much can be done about that with all the different manufactures.

    • ACRc

Get iphone/ipad and just play. Don’t have to worry about what works or what not.

  • https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000953902834&ref=tn_tnmn Cesar Ruiz

Can’t wait to try it on my HTC Evo 3D

  • gherea

Wow, this is nice GTA on phone

  • http://www.desean.net desean

They should have launched with a big bang by being on the last day of the $0.10 app promotion :)

  • humidity

Can’t wait to get this on the GN!

  • Thomas Biard

To be honest, I had more fun on GTA 1 and 2. The bird’s eye perspective and very minimal approach to it still hold a special place in my heart. (And this is not just me being bitter that I don’t have a Dual Core phone)

  • kzlife

    No sgs2 love </3

  • Jim

I know it says it is available for the Atrix. Is that the Atrix 2 or both of them?

    • frmorrison

      It would be both.

On a different note, it is crazy that his game came out 10 years ago, time flies.

  • rekaviles

To though who bought this game, is it worth it? I’m a big GTA fan, but I can’ timagine playing this on a touch screen device. Driving around might be ok, but how are the controls for everything else?

    Thanks in advance.

  • eliander mendoza

i want to run it in my old motorola thriumph >.<

  • https://plus.google.com/109600738460265587799/posts Lewis McGeary

  • staryoshi

I am so tempted to get this and shadowgun… so I think I will :P It was nice knowing you, $10 :)

  • Numbertwo

It looks great too bad I dont have a tegra 2 device, I need to get up to speed with technology even if its only for 2 months lol

  • Jimmy13

This is where my high school was lost.

  • Marc’us H.

Amazing that at one point we thought the PS2 was as good as it got, now we can play what was at the time a pinnacle game on something as simple as a friggin’ PHONE or tablet! Kinda blows my mind at how fast tech has moved in just 10 years.

  • http://luggagedesigners.com Mike Hanel

still play this on my ps2 sometimes for fun. About to dl now and check it out on my G2x

  • delinear

I will definitely be downloading this tonight to try out on my shiny new Nexus, I just can’t believe a) that it’s been 10 years and b) how far we’ve come that phones today will run the kind of games that required a reasonably beefy PC a decade ago.

  • http://ilysespieces.tumblr.com Ilyse Rose

Looking good, though I doubt I’ll ever get a chance to play this.

  • Samar

    Love that.

  • xsynth

Are you f&#*ing kidding me? Not available in your country.
It really grinds my gears when companies (especially big companies like R*) don’t do worldwide releases.

(I hope it has garages unlike GTA4,& car modifications,& character build)!

  82. It’s too bad, that it won’t gonna work on my Samsung Galaxy i5500. With this device I’m only able to play some HOG games as ABC Mysteriez or something.
