The Dark Meadow is the latest Android game to use Unreal Engine 3

the-dark-meadow

This week NVIDIA announced via their Tegra Zone blog that Phosphor Game Studios is bringing their iOS thriller The Dark Meadow to Android early next year. Set in an abandoned hospital gone wild, the game looks to creep you out and blow you away with stunning visuals using Epic Game’s Unreal Engine.

Phosphor Game Studios has optimized their game to run on Tegra devices by incorporating atmospheric real-time lighting effects and high resolution textures. NVIDIA’s post doesn’t mention if this game is targeted for Tegra 2 or Tegra 3 devices, so hopefully it will run on both.

Reviews from the iOS version were generally positive, so we’re looking forward to this game arriving on Android. For more on The Dark Meadow, watch the trailer video below and then read the reviews from IGN, Destructoid, Kotaku and Joystiq.

This game looks great I can’t wait to give it a try!

    • Sil Claeys

Indeed, can I just say ‘Drool!’

    • Julio Chavez

And I bet it will look better after it is optimized for Tegra devices. The video only shows the current iPhone version.

Trailer looks boring. I think I’d prefer games with Zombie theme, like left for dead or Resident Evil. These games keeps my Adrenaline rushing.

I hope the Mail-400+Chainfire3D+NVIDIA plugin on my SGS2 will run this game fine too :)

Gaming just keeps getting better and better with each generation of SoCs.

The Unreal Engine is unbelievably good :o

I wonder what else is coming up bases on it… wow. Just wow.

      • stenzor

I know it’s not the Unreal engine, but I really want a good port of Quake 3 Arena for Android.. that is by far my favourite FPS of all time

  • Skis03

Looks like I need to get a new Android tablet so I can try out all these new games coming out. It is crazy how good the graphics look.

  • erikiksaz

How exciting. Anyone remember what it was like to boot up Unreal for the first time on a PC? Still blows my mind that graphics on our handhelds >> than that by a stretch.

  • Shadowlore

While I’ve no doubt the graphics look amazing, the game on iOS has gotten a few ‘mediocre’ reviews. Not sure if that’s due to people comparing it to other iOS games (of which, there are tons) or because the game itself is a bit ‘blah’.

Regardless, can’t wait to see how it plays on Android w-Tegra :)

  • Conduitz

Now all we need is the Prime to release so we can start playing these truely next gen mobile games.

  • WarDrake

Holy Crap! this game looks sick! one more reason to get a Transformer Prime :D

  • David Hughes

Soon we will start seeing games coming from Android > iOS, 2012 is going to be the year of Android!

    • http://goncalossilva.com goncalossilva

More like 201X is going to be the year of Android :p

  • jamal

Keep ‘em coming. Now all I need is a tablet to try it on.

  • Adryan maldonado

One of those monsters got stabbed in the royal gems OUCHH!!!

  • http://luggagedesigners.com Mike Hanel

now that looks awesome! Who needs a console when we have games like this in our pockets!

    • Anthony E

      1. Those graphics do not compare to any current generation console’s graphics.
      2. The gameplay in the trailer looked like you just walked in narrow hallways and attacked enemies who were always in the exact same position.
      3. BUTTONS BUTTONS BUTTONS.

      • Anthony E

        Forgot my point,

Real gamers need their consoles (and pcs, which fall in the same category in this case since they have actual buttons, and complex gameplay/controls)

        • http://goncalossilva.com goncalossilva

Now that’s true. As much as I love games on Android, I can’t really live without my PS3 (or Xbox, or something else for hardcore gaming).

      • http://androidtidbits.com Androidtidbits.com

Agree, I think it lacks the thrill factors that throws the player out of his seat.

  • Thomas Biard

Gimme something quadcore, with LTE and a Bluetooth controller and we got ourselves a console substitute.

  • cristian cristiandonose

I really need to win a tablet for this game :))

  • ArticulateFool

I hope to see more dvelopers bringing games to all high end phones. I am not sure if I agree with the tegra exclusivity.

  • Trinhbo

I’m glad to see the overall quality of games rising on Android devices. I agree with ArticulateFool about the Tegra exclusivity. Perhaps one solution is to have games detect what kind of hardware you have and scale down or up based on what the underlying hardware is capable of.

  • HoLfElDeR

    Wow this is sooo nice

  • azswift

Anyone else excited about games like this on your TV? HTC Amaze connected by HDMI and a wireless gamepad?

Anyone know if the Onlive gamepad will work with some of the other games out there?

  • ralphwiggum1

Played this through on the iPad 2 recently (it was on sale for $0.99 a couple weeks ago). Way more interesting than Infinity Blade (haven’t tried the sequel), and pretty spooky. I was scared playing at night. It is similar to Infinity Balde with slash to fight and also a crossbow thrown in though not heavily used.

But it does get repetitive and the story does end, though you can keep playing and leveling up, but you wouldn’t want to.

    • Shadowlore

Was waiting for an honest review.. all I’d seen were tons of iOS reviews comparing it to many other games out there.. and the biggest gripe was that it was too short, the graphics clipped, and there was no replayability.

      Thx!

  • schofieldesign

I’ve been looking for more in depth games for Tegra zone, now I got OnLive I am expecting a lot from mobile games. I love OnLive but my schools wifi is shoddy which makes playing games a no go. Something like this would occupy my time quite nicely

THUMBS UP FOR HARDCORE GAMING ON ANDROID DEVICES

the game looks awesome. i hope its just tegra optimised not tegra only.

  • Louis A

These games are getting really really good by the day. Can’t wait to try something like this on a quad-core tab.

  • Jöran Schlömer

I can not belive how good that game is looking :D

  • Hall Lo

This is amazing! :O soooo sweet!

The screenshot reminds me of a game I played ages ago and really enjoyed, Clive Barker’s “Undying”:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Barker's_Undying
I think I’ll have to take a break from MMO-land and give tablet gaming a try if this title is anything like that classic. It really is fun to play a game where a real directory makes full use of the medium to kick up the level of immersion.

I bet few have heard of Undying, and this sums up the reason why:
    Critical response
Clive Barker’s Undying was in general very well received by critics, with it receiving an average of 85 on Metacritic. The game won GameSpot’s “Best game that no one played” award.

  • Jimmy Day

Graphics look pretty amazing. Can’t wait to give it a go as soon as I purchase the Prime.

  • rekaviles

Am I the only on who hates playing these type of games on my phone?

Screen is just too small to really get into it and the controls are not fun to use. I guess a blue tooth game controller woul dsolve all that, but at that point, why am I using a game controller bgger than my phone, to play a game on there?

I love the fact that gaming is getting to this lvl on Android, but i’ll now only download for my tab and stick with puzzle games on my phone.

    -HTC Sensation user.

    • rekaviles

wow, I can;t imagine playing this on a smaller screen, like the iPhone. o.O

    • http://www.focuszonedevelopment.com Homncruse

I’ve had the same problem. I thought it would be different once I got my tablet, but it really isn’t. While yes, screen size is an issue for phones, the tablet makes up for that. Sadly, it’s not just the screen – the touch controls don’t really apply well to games like this which favor quicker, more precise response time.

I hope this game sets itself apart from the mold, because it looks friggin’ awesome!

      • rekaviles

        That it does looks great.

I also agree with you on the touch controls. Doesn’t work well for quick game play.
        Physical buttons a must!

    • Anthony E

Agreed. I miss the days of windows mobile and early android where good devices came out with buttons on them.

I don’t care how nice the graphics for a 3d game want to look. If your UI is blocking 50% of the screen, and my hands are blocking the other 50%, what’s the point of looking nice?

      • rekaviles

        exactly!

  • Jimmy13

Hopefully I win a tablet so I can play this ;)

  • Dan

It should be noted that thjs game is NOT a FPS as there is no free-movement in this game. No reason for it to require tegra 3.

  • ZRod

So… Where is a nice looking Final Fantasy X or XII style RPG? I’m over all these first person and shooter games. Not my cup of tea.

  • Marc’us H.

Anyone else look at their phone in disgust, wondering why theirs can’t do any of that after watching this video?

    • rekaviles

      lol. No

  • CJ LaFleur

I’ve said this before and i bet a lot of you are already thinking it but this will look amazing on a transformer prime!

  • Anthropic

Oh yeah, THAT’s why I bought a huge external battery for my phone…
