Samsung advertises the tablet Apple tried to stop

the-tablet-apple-tried-to-s

After Samsung’s recent court victory over Apple, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now back on sale in Australia. Samsung took the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with a new series of ads in the Australian paper The Sun-Herald this weekend. Thanks to an Australian Twitter user Martin Anugle (@maungle), we were able to catch a glimpse of the ad which reads, “The Tablet Apple Tried to Stop.”

This new campaign along with The Next Big Thing ad spots on TV have show have shown Samsung’s willingness to take on Apple. In a way, it sort of reminds me how Apple attacked Microsoft with their “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads from several years ago.

Samsung Australia’s vice president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee, recently said that Apple’s courtroom battles had made the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a “household name” thanks to all the media attention it received.

What do you think of the new tougher Samsung? Do you like to see them go negative on Apple in their marketing message?

I actually dislike how they’re using Apple’s defeat as a marketing move. I’d greatly prefer if they just ignored them… it would definitely be a sign of superiority.

      • Anthony E

No. Using your opponents antics against them is a sign of superiority. Sitting by while your name gets destroyed, that’s a sign of weakness.

Ask Microsoft how well ignoring Apple’s antics worked for them around the Windows Vista days, when the majority of people complaining about Vista’s ‘problems’ were mindless idiots who hadn’t even used the product before.

        • hldc1

          Agreed.

          • mr 1338

            Great move from Samsung.

If it´s so good that Apple shits its pants you have to get it :)

        • http://goncalossilva.com goncalossilva

Apple’s tactics are mediocre and should be treated as such.

Using them against them is fine, but placing that kind of header on a newspaper ad with their name is not a sign of superiority at all.

Look at Google: how many times have they mentioned Apple directly in their press releases/ads, despite the long war filled with bullshit that Apple created around Android? Yeah… *that’s* superiority.

          • moelsen8

taking the high road doesn’t mean more sales. i think they need to attack them just as they were attacked. people are fickle and this is how you catch their attention. i think this is a brilliant marketing campaign. someone needs to put apple in their place.

          • Anthony E

If I just spent tens, possibly hundreds of millions of dollars defending myself in court because a cry baby sued me, you best believe I’m gonna try to make back my legal fees any way I can.

If there’s one thing that Apple has proven through their ability to sell products that are inferior across the board to their competitors products FOR MORE MONEY, it’s that mindshare is very important. The best way to get mindshare is to get people talking about things that humans find interesting.

I can say with absolute certainty that more people will find an advertisement with a hint of drama more interesting than an advertisement that looks the exact same as every other ad on the page.

As for Google’s high road, I’ve seen Vic Gundotra take jabs at Apple before. People/companies only ever ‘always take the high road’ when you choose to turn a blind eye to them passing you buy on the low road.

          • aranea

One of the main reasons Google doesn’t directly mention Apple so much is because Apple still sells Google products on their phones and tablets. Google maps and search comes as default on i-devices. Say if Apple went with Bing then I think we would see a lot more jabbing from Google.

          • CactusCat

El Wrongo, goncalossilva…. That is the PERFECT ad line. The fact that Apple tried to ban it, didn’t get it done, and now its available… well, most people would want to see why Apple tried to get it banned, what was it that had Apple scared? It’s the exact same strategy used by various advertising schemes like “Banned in Boston” (but of course its available here), etc…
This is the perfect time to use this advertising tactic. Time for you to sit back and see what happens.

        • 666

A sign of superiority is sales numbers, something the Galaxy Tab can’t even come close to.

          • ihatefanboys

@666 are u the douche that downvoted me ?

        • ihatefanboys

Exactly, meanwhile Microsofts windows was superior, but letting their name get dragged through the mud was bad for business….well a little…windows is still used on 90% of all computers in the world……Apple must hate losing…..lol

        • teudster

Windows Vista was a piece of crap. It was ahead of XP yes but it was an unfinished product and a real bad release. Dont forget all the delays. Apple again did MS a favor of waking them up. As far as Samsung and android tablets: Resistance is futile.

Samsung, the next big thing is already there.
There are a lot of people who say Samsung copies. I say, even if they do, so what. If it leads to better products and lower price points, then who cares. In the end, this competition benefits us.

  • zyphbear

I will say this is a little bold of Samsung, but if you’re gonna do it, why not be bold?
After all, that’s sometimes the best way to get attention.

I think it’s quite brilliant marketing. There are more people who DON’T know about the history between Samsung and Apple than the people who do. At first read, it definitely makes you wonder “why would Apple want to stop it? Is it better? I’m Australian, and yeah Samsung have really been ramping up the advertising here.
And that’s a good thing. I have friends who are in no way techy (some of them literally don’t know what android is) and they are raving about their Galaxy S II, or going to get the Nexus.

I think it was good marketing, people have heard enough of Apple trying to ban it, and now its available for the public. It would cause interest to see why Apple tried to ban it. They kind of threw out a reminder to everyone. .

Hey hey remember back when Apple tried to ban this well they failed…come check it out its now for sale… I know I would go to the store to get a look at it to see what all the fuss was about. And that might lead to a sale.

Also liked the short video. Small poking at the app’s :).\

  36. the site is waaaaaaaaaay too slow to load. crawling.. i dunno where else to write this. always is. takes forever to load anything.

  37. I for one am glad Samsung is taking them on. Competition creates innovation. To sell your product you really have to push the limits and create something great. This battle will only lead to more amazing devices for all of us, and hopefully keep prices reasonable.

  38. I love to see samsung going after Apple and its fanbase. It’s reminicscient of the pc and mac commercials but more acurate and more entertaining.

  39. LAWL this is great xD Hey Apple how does that taste like? Had a good time suing the Tab hadn’t you?

  40. Well played Samsung!

Silly Apple you can’t go to war with the Android army

  43. LMFAO! How I Love Samsung’s courageous ballsy determination.
    FTW!

  44. Apple is frightened trust me. I applaud Samsung for going after apple and standing strong.

And how do you know Apple is “frightened”? Do you know people who work at Apple and have voiced these opinions? Have you ever been to Cupertino to see Apple HQ for yourself? Do you somehow have insider knowledge of the behind the scenes work at Apple? No? Then stfu.

  45. Like they say, Any publicity is Good publicity. Kinda hilarious text Ad thought.

I just bought the 10.1 (I live here in Austin) and it puts the ipad where it belongs, in a teenagers panties. It constantly out performs the ipad and i would never swich.

  47. Apple asked for this to happen, plain and simple.

  48. WIN

    I’m glad for SAMSUNG..

  49. haha. kind of funny

  50. NOICE SAMSUNG!!!! Love the gloating advertising. Ive read that statistics show that gloating a victory over another company can and will greatly increase sales(ok not really)

  51. Wow Samsung… that’s just really awesome! Taking the problem that Apple had caused them an spin it into an advantage!

  52. Samsungs ads recently have been pretty great, I think. They’re just funny and smart.

  53. That’s not a negative ad. It’s just staying what Apple did and is doing. If Apple didn’t see this coming they’re idiots. I love how SAMSUNG is hating on Apple all over now. It’s refreshing.

  54. I’m Australian, and yeah Samsung have really been ramping up the advertising here.
And that’s a good thing. I have friends who are in no way techy (some of them literally don’t know what android is) and they are raving about their Galaxy S II, or going to get the Nexus.
    It’s music to my ears!

  55. Best ad ever! Samsung kicks Apples ASS!

  56. lol too funny but brilliant.

  57. I think it’s just fair to state the facts. With apple having for years an aggressive campaign, sometimes it’s just time to do the same thing.

  58. Read…”The tablet Apple was afraid of”!!

  59. Everyday I lose more respect for Apple and gain respect for Samsung

  60. Is the time for apple to back off

  61. lol I love it!

  62. I started with the galaxy s went to Motorola then back to the galaxy s 2. Samsung is highly ranked in my book. There is more than apple in this world

  64. These tactics, I like!!
