Troubleshoot your bricked Logitech Revue…with a hammer

As you probably know by know, Logitech has started rolling out Google TV 2.0 (based on Android 3.1 Honeycomb) to its Logitech Revue devices. The Google TV 2.0 update brings a much increased UI to the Revue, and also gives Revue owners access to the Android Market and it’s 50+ Google TV-optimized applications.

If you happen to own one of these devices, you probably at one point or another got sick of waiting for Logitech to release the Google TV 2.0 update, which landed several weeks after Sony Google TV devices started to receive the upgrade. Many disgruntled users were so sick of waiting that they decided to attempt to root their devices and flash a leaked Honeycomb ROM to their devices. For some, this process went off without a hitch. For others, however, the leaked ROM “bricked” their device, essentially leaving it as a $99 paperweight.

Kevin Pereira, co-star of G4′s “Attack of the Show” TV program, was one of the unlucky owners of a $99 paperweight. With the help of a ladyfriend (Meg), Kevin came up with a great way to troubleshoot a bricked Logitech Revue. Though his technique didn’t bring the Revue back to life, it certainly alleviated his frustrations with having a bricked device.

Though this technique was only demonstrated on the Logitech Revue, we believe this method will work on any bricked device. If you try out this technique for yourself, please go ahead and let us know how it went for you in the comments.

if you cant fix it, hammer it till it powers on

    • WarDrake

Isn’t this how all technology works on Hollywood?

      • Legend

Ooooh Hollywood, the only place where you can ‘enhance’ images infinitely until you see the murderers face crystal clear!

    • stenzor

      Stop. Hammertime

  • WallaceD

    Impressive technique.

  • goncalossilva

    Now that’s *real* engineering :D

I remember fixing my computer by punching it a bunch of times when I was a kid.

    • WarDrake

HAHAHAHA!!! That’s standard troubleshooting by kids :P

      • goncalossilva

You bet! And the funny thing is that it works! :D

    • mr 1338

haha i was “mad” at my keyboard and pressed all the buttons as hard as i possibly coud (probably trying to hurt them) :D

      • goncalossilva

Yeah… I remember that. And after everything failed and I was desperate I would end up petting it, begging for it to work :)

  • dpleus

So I guess the old adage that a little applied science can fix almost anything doesn’t apply here. Great way to make you feel better though.

  • ramenchef

Poor choice with the hammer. They should have gone with a bat, a la Office Space.

    • milton

Die mother fucker, die mother fucker, DIE!

  • WarDrake

This just made me think of a King Crab!

What Armor? I’ve got a sledge Hammer!!!

  • Thomas Biard

    Explosives or bust I say…

  • OutofPlace

I’m assuming that I’ll get the update someday (still waiting). If not, maybe the hammer trick will “motivate” my Revue to go out and find the update for itself. Whatever the result it would probably be an improvement!

    • Anthony Domanico

the update should be available. have you tried manually checking for an update?

      • ajonrichards

I’ve been checking every day, only to be taunted by a curt “Your device is up to date.” You lie!

        • halo0

Same here. I feel like Joe Wilson every day when I yell at it.

        • triplem

You can manually grab the update now if you’re really impatient: Please read all the warnings and directions first; you’d hate to brick your device in the process

      • OutofPlace

Yeah, I’ve checked. According to Logitech’s forums the roll out is going to take several days with “most” users getting updated Sunday evening. Well, I checked last night at about 11:30 and like ajonrichards I get the “Your device is up to date” message. If it wasn’t so comical how badly Logitech has handled this whole Revue debacle it might make me angry (at least I only paid the 99 bucks).

But instead I just shake my head and walk away. Someday the update will actually show. And when it does I’m sure the thing will be novel again – if only for a few minutes.

I want to pick one of these up. My kids love Android so I thought it would be a great Christmas gift. (yes my wife is resisting) (and no, my kids have no idea what Android is)

    • Nick Gray

Just got mine over the weekend. Don’t worry, it’ll come.

  • jawabba

The girl (with hammer in hand) stated, “I can’t believe these are only $99.” In a string of unfortunate events, she accidentally dropped the hammer on the device 15 times causing the Revue to break into a million pieces. When asked for comment, the girl stated “I thought it was a newly shaped peanut M&M and I was trying crack the shiny thin candy shell.”

  • amgala

I just bought a refurbished unit for $80. I hope it won’t meet the same fate as this one!

  • eddieonofre

I have been fixing my devices that way since 1995
    Devices fixed: 2.5

  • keridel

if in doubt give it a clout..

  • zyphbear

I really wonder what was so different in the Logitech Revue update compared to the Sony one. Not only how long it took to get released, but also when I plugged in my Sony Google TV a couple weeks ago, it was a pretty seamless operation too.

Though a Hammer is what I plan to be using on my current smartphone when I change carriers…

    • halo0

I think the difference is Logitech’s spite.

  • Charlesbrown79

Has anyone actually gotten the update? I’m patiently waiting.

  • Haggie

Had the update waiting for me this morning. Ran it without incident. Haven’t had a chance to check it out in detail yet. Looking forward to getting Plex installed on it and see how it handles streaming local content. Also curious about the ability to sideload apps via Dropbox.

  • Taylor

Watching this muted with the Geto Boys’ “Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta” playing in the background.

But seriously, who the hell two-hands a framing hammer? Somebody’s never used tools before. Geeks! (kidding)

  • Jason Corry

Love it! Very happy mine didnt brick from the Beta install…

  • seven2k

I cam close to doing this..this weekend..but today before i left for work i had the update screen…I almsot came to tears and was on my knees!!

  • James Conley

Before mine got updated I thought I could Kill it with fire maybe. Waiting on the update was more than frustrating.

  • HoLfElDeR

    Hammer FTW :)

  • halo0

I went so far as to perform a factory reset on mine in hopes that would force the update since I had read that new boxes were getting it right away. Alas, it did not update, and I wasted 20 minutes re-doing all the setup. FML.

  • humidity

    Hammer 1 Revue 0

  • Donald Williams

Sounded like she was an apple fan. With the way she was hitting it I would not be surprised how weak they are.
Noticed the real android fan in this vid… He Pummeled the thing with one swing. Now thats real anger from a fandroid.

  • Taylor

After listening to the actual audio this time, I noticed she goes from using “tantamount” correctly to spitting out, “Oh, I hit it; is broke.” I’m confused. Is she smart or just “purty”?

    • halo0

I’m going with just “purty”. Tantamount wasn’t the right word to use, should have said “paramount”.

  • ihatefanboys

Got the update today when i turned on my TV, awesome. Honestly to call waiting for the update “frustrating” is kinda silly…I knew i would get it eventually, i have other things to do anyways….turning on the TV and having the update there was a pleasant surprise tho.

    • halo0

It is actually quite frustrating when you’ve been told multiple times (sometimes falsely) that the update is out and you find out you can’t get it.

      • pekosROB

I am in that boat… been checking constantly when at home since last Friday!

  • jakymiwm

    What a waist

  • Omar Santiago

lmao i was reading all his tweets leading up to this last night! lol

  • pekosROB

“As you probably know by know, Logitech has started rolling out Google TV 2.0 (based on Android 3.1 Honeycomb) to its Logitech Revue devices.”

No, I don’t know, because every time I’ve checked for an update it tells me I’m up to date with 2.1 (or whatever it is). I have been checking vigorously since Friday and no dice!

After reading this post, it makes me even more frustrated because I don’t want to brick my device and the waiting sucks. Oh well.

    • pekosROB

Ok nevermind, it was ready for an update when I got home!

  • kusic

Actually I would not do it. Kind of sorry for the gadget. I would try to resurrect it somehow.

  • Adam Clark

either the Revue is stronger than it looks or she’s just weak.

  • David Gomez

that actually does work sometimes i’ve fixed a few devices by hitting them lol

  • honourbound68

The hammer treatment always works lol

  • Joel Bird

That bricking is a bit of a noob mistake, all the tutorials stated you had to do the unofficial releases in succession. I thought that not doing so was really the only way to brick the thing (apart from a power outage while updating).

I bought a Revue from Amazon a few weeks back and plugged it in on the weekend for the first time. It updated, but not to 3.1. I did however get the update Monday afternoon after I plugged it in again. Very impressed with the update thus far.

While the Revue definitely doesn’t beat a dedicated media PC, it destroys Smart TV’s. YouTube runs epic smooth.

  • Homncruse

    But does it BLEND??

  • Charlesbrown79

    Yay It’s updating…

  • halo0

Got my update when I got home from work!

  • Adryan maldonado

Violence is always the answer. Dont let anyone tell you different. I watched the video first before i read the article and i kept thinking to my self “That guy sounds familiar. After i saw him and read the article then i knew why

  • nawatsgirl

maybe all it needs is a really good bath….in gasoline?

  • donger

    i like the video. lol
