Yesterday Toshiba unveiled the Excite X10, which they billed as the world’s thinnest and lightest 10-inch Android tablet. We spent some hands-on time with the device and were impressed with the magnesium alloy casing and Corning Gorilla Glass, but the rest of the specs failed to… excite us.
Other manufactures have already raised the bar with quad-core processors and Android 4, but Toshiba went with the dual-core 1GHz OMAP4430 processor and showed off the device running Android 3.2. We might forgive those specs, but Toshiba will be charging a premium price of $529 for the 16GB model and $599 for the 32GB model.
The current crop of Android tablets is already thin and light enough (see Transformer Prime and Galaxy Tab 10.1), so I don’t really think being a millimeter or two thinner really matters at this point. When it comes to the high-end Android tablets, most users want faster performance and they are willing to pay for it.
