Video: Can The Droid RAZR Maxx be the phone to last 24 hours on a single charge?

Droid-RAZR-MAXX-630

We have seen it and touched it at CES. The Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx is just another RAZR, albeit with a larger battery, and a bit of a thicker body. But Motorola is hitting a rather large market with this improved RAZR. Pretty much all of us complain about battery life, and we ask for at least a full day of heavy use. Could the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx be the first to give us this privilege?

Motorola has released a new advertising video for the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx, boasting it as the “all day and all night” 4G LTE smartphone. In the video, multiple frustrated smartphone users express their bad experiences with short battery life. They are shown the Droid RAZR Maxx, which causes great awe (as usual, with commercials).

Is this really the device to take us through a whole day of use, though? Motorola is boasting that it can, and last week Engadget got word of a rumored event that is meant to last for 24 hours. This event, rumored for February 6th, is meant to put the Droid RAZR Maxx to the test, so we assume Motorola believes (or knows) that this smartphone can go for a full day (literally) on a single charge. [1]

To see if this is possible, we have to take a look at the Original Droid RAZR’s performance, as well as the battery differences. Users will sacrifice thinness for juice, when purchasing a Droid RAZR Maxx. It really does not make a huge difference, though. The thicker device measures 8.99 mm, just a bit under 2 mm more than the original Droid RAZR. And the battery? Well that bad boy is a 3,300 mAh monster, with much more power than the OG RAZR’s 1,780 mAh battery.

Our very own Anthony Domanico wrote a review of the Motorola Droid RAZR. According to his experience, the device lasts from 6-8 hours under default settings. But once he started using Motorola’s Smart Actions, he managed to still have 30% of his juice after a 14-hour day. And yes, this included continuous 4G LTE usage.

This means the device went down about 5% per hour. If we do the math, this means that the device would probably be able to reach 20 hours. But even if we pretend Anthony is not using the device enough, Motorola should be able to break the 24-hour threshold.

Let’s say we can make the Droid RAZR last 16 hours on a fully charged 1,780 mAh battery. The Droid RAZR Maxx’s 3,300 mAh battery is about 85% bigger. This means that (theoretically) it should last just a bit over 12 extra hours, adding up to a full 26 hours of glory. And let’s not forget that we would be sleeping for about 8 hours (on average). In which case, the phone would be on standby, lasting even longer.

If you ask us, it is definitely possible that this device will be able to go a full day (even perhaps slightly over 24 hours), under moderate circumstances. Use Smart Actions and turn off features when not needed, and you should do as great as Anthony did. There are many factors that can interfere, as always. So let’s just wait and hold judgement until we can get our hands on this bad boy and test out its battery life.

In the meanwhile, check out Motorola’s video, and sound off in the comments. Do you guys think Motorola can give you a full day of battery life with this smartphone? Would you get it if it does?

I wouldn’t get that much life the way I use and abuse my cell phone

    • YMS123

Maybe not, but a 3300 mAh battery should still be pretty good

i have 3500 mAh extended battery in my Galaxy S. It lasts a day or two. But don’t tell that to developers, do not simplify their life. You will give them the finger — they will bite the whole arm. Let they optimize the existing gear first on smaller batteries, yell instead that you like thin and light and then quietly buy on ebay $10 extended battery and enjoy the life :)

    • delinear

Yep, exactly this – battery life needs to come from smart coding as well as better tech. Otherwise we’ll get the battery draining equivalent of bloatware.

I get dont get how these other users get these numbers. Im on my 2nd RAZR and I hardly get 6-8 hours on 3G. I dont even want to talk about LTE because my fully charge phone will go in about 3-4 hours max. I use SmartActions and I want to know what you guys do specifically to get it to last an entire day.

      Set a rule. Triggers are:
      Battery not charging
      display off

      Turn off:
WiFi, bluetooth, cell data, sync etc…

Takes it a sec to get the data up when you wake it, but it’s totally worth it.

Also… make sure your display isn’t really bright. Display takes up a ton.

dang I cant waite to get this phone finally a smart phone that does every thing a smart phone should and needs to do. I currentley have a droid 2 and im freekin over it I swear i charge it like 3 times a day with just moderate on lineing. I will b stoaked not to have to live my life plugged into an outlet. I calculate that with the amount of time i spend browsing and stuff like that there is really no reason that this phone wont go like 4 maybe 5 days on a single charge stooooaked, cant waite.

Well for me a fone that last over 15 hours is more than enough, since we still have to sleep (and charge the fone during that) And 3300 mAh should be able to last for that long :D

My SGS2 with orignal ROM have no issue lasting 24 with whole day wifi turned on.
Couple of sms sent and talking via GSM at least 15min and also skype.
Worst battery drainer is 3G connetion if that is in use a lot.
And I have abou 70 apps installed and dont feel any of them are battery drainer.

I wish my phone had a battery as big as that!!

This MAXX makes me very interested. Not because I would need all that battery life right now, but when I’m 18months into my contract and the battery is maximum 80% capacity of its original glory, I’m going to need those extra mAh. Since you can’t just go buy a new battery, this would be the ovbvious choice for me, but alas, I’m 18months into my current contract and not getting a phone for another 6.

I can get 24 hours out of my Nexus – unplugged at 7am it’s now 10pm and still on 46%, that’s with email, twitter and texting all day, half an hour of kindle, 90 mins web browsing and half an hour browsing apps. I admit video or games nuke the battery though! Setting screen to auto and WiFi all day really helps too :o)

I had to get a 2750mAh for my Thunderbolt and it last a full day easy almost two with normal use. A 3300 should get a full day easy. I cannot wait for this phone to come out.

kinda stinks for all the people who got the OG Razr, but hey I guess thats how you make money

Awesome. I hope that “The phone that lasts the longest on a single charge” is the next thing manufacturers go for, instead of screen size & data speed (those are nice too though).

It’s time to catch up batteries with the rest of technology! :)

I have a OG RAZR and give it heavy usage during the day. I can get 8-10 hours. But if i’m traveling, on calls, navigation, etc. I need it plugged in and also use an extended battery.

It would be a great gesture if Verizon or motoroa offered an upgrade for OG RAZR owners

I’m waiting for this phone to get it for my wife. As a nurse she can’t charge her phone. Wanted to get her the G-Nex but that won’t last through her through her 12 hr + shift.

blue tooth will be the big test. i’m on the road alot and nothing eats a battery quicker than my blue tooth. if i could get 12 to 15 hours out of a single charge i would be sold

  • Whippler

Well i’m using Desire Z (rooted and tweaked), it has a 1300mAh battery, and with minimal use i can make that last 2 days, and the night between. So this beast could do that whit good amount of use. And fairly easy last 3 days, and minimal use probably 4 days.

If motorola can get 24hours out of this phone then that is great news. this means that other manufacturers will start stepping it up and improving their battery and battery life. I’m an htc guy and I hope htc gets on this soon. Especially with sprint about to release lte phones with their new network.
