To say that 2011 was a huge year for Samsung would be an understatement. When they released the Behold II in the very tail-end of 2009, it seemed 2010 would be the year Samsung fell off the face of the earth. And then the Galaxy S happened. The six months that followed the original Galaxy S release were impressive to say the least. They paved the way for an absolutely massive 2011 for Samsung and have left us wondering what Samsung is going to bring to the table in 2012.
Ryan Bidan, Product Marketing Manager for Samsung, recently sat down with Laptop magazine and handed out some insight on where Samsung is headed in the future, how they view their competition and more.
Speaking on how Samsung plans to stay competitive against Amazon and Apple in 2012, Bidan said it’s all about choice. By taking a look at Samsung’s current tablet lineup, you might say that’s a no-brainer. They’ve released a 10.1-inch tablet to compete closely with the iPad, along with 8.9, 7.7, 7.0 and 5.3-inch variations that all feature varied specs and special features to differentiate them from the competition.
Bidan says people are going to want more from a smaller tablet than what Amazon has to offer. Not only do Samsung’s smaller tablets trump Amazon’s in specs, but they also boast features like an IR blaster and the Galaxy Note’s S pen. Both of these features will likely make a reappearance in Samsung’s 2012 lineup of tablets and devices. But it’s not just about an enhanced stylus or giant remote, it’s about how your devices work with each other to create one big unified experience.
Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, is Google’s first attempt at creating a unifying experience. While Bidan does mention that it’s a step in the right direction, and that TouchWiz has already been headed in the direction, he says a truly unified approach goes beyond UI. Samsung has a hand in nearly every type of consumer electronic you can imagine, including TVs and appliances — both of which Samsung wants to connect to your phone and tablet.
It would seem Samsung wants to make 2012 the year in which consumers commit to Samsung for every electronic in their house. And they want to make sure every single one of them communicates seamlessly for a totally unified experience. By next fall, you very well could be sending 1080p video from your quad-core Galaxy S III to your ultra-high resolution Galaxy Tab 11, editing it with an S pen and sending it to your TV, all while starting the washing machine with a widget on your homescreen.
